Welcome to the Melbourne Community Daily Discussion Thread.
My main accomplishment for today is that I pulled myself out of my doom / inaction / depresso / obsession spiral and made dinner rather than eating leftovers or toast (or worse, nothing).
Easy stir fry noodles, with frozen veg and some mock chicken and mock char siew I splurged on at Minh Phat the other day. Red rice noodles from my mum, and chilli-garlic-ginger paste premade using my own garden chillies (frozen while I was away).
Dinner on Sunday night was an epic effort of making three curries almost at the same time. Dal (with tadka made separately), tempeh/eggplant/capsicum dry fried with spices (first two items fried separately), and a decadant mock mutton coconut curry. All that exhausted me, far out.
Solid effort mate. Looks delish! Is that meal prep?
Also side note, nobody asked, but here's my personal preference of veggie protein. Paneer (cottage cheese) > tofu > tempeh >>> soy chunks.
big hugs and kudos for doin' stuff when it's hard to do stuff
That all looks incredible! Well done!
Former boss reached out to me last week to gauge my interest in returning to a place I worked at years ago.
He was the reason I left so I'm not sure how I feel. I gave them an exorbitant price tag for my return and some other conditions and let's see what they say.
Been there, done that, good money, killed my mental health and relationships.
I'm not saying don't do it, just make sure you can recognise the symptoms when it starts affecting other areas of your life.
100%
Last time I left I had enough of the boss and his ways. That was discussed yesterday (not with him, but with my old colleagues that are still there). Apparently he's changed a bit but probably not enough.
I remind myself why I left in the first place and that money ain't everything.
RIP fruit salad, you were gonna be delicious and RIP favourite baking bowl.
For a solid 5 seconds I thought I was looking at some pretty cool wall art in front of some kind of futuristic coffin. Then I read what you wrote and noticed the cupboard handles.
F
oh noes my paypal account has been referred to collections!! shall call their number provided to make payment yes yes
-_-
Yeah well, the Australian Tax Authority has issued a warrant for my arrest in WA.
Who's the greater mastermind criminal huh?
All I've got is unpaid tolls and a medical insurance account that's about to expire, feel like I've accomplished very little in life :(
I have a delivery with a wrong address, and need to click on an unrecognisable link to get it sorted. Also owe my linnkts account money. Oh and a missed call from Uganda.
Ebay wanted to know if I purchased a $900 gift card with my credit card, I did! But when I asked when it will be delivered to my chosen address the representative hung up on me. Terrible customer service.
I found a bank letter outside with no envelope and the replacement card missing (could see the imprint)... went over to my neighbour's place to let someone know only to see a further bunch of her mail opened and strewn in a pile.
Fortunately I still had her daughter's number and let her know in case someone was draining her mum's bank account or stealing her identity. Then I gathered the other opened mail and hid it behind something so other people wouldn't grab it. That's so shitty. She's a sick old woman. I found the original near my own letterbox so wondering if the pricks have stolen any of my mail 😰
Edit: To clarify the bank letter with the missing/stolen card was addressed to this neighbour. I went to talk to her family about it because a few years ago she had a stroke
That’s so good of you! Our mail boxes are regularly pillaged. It’s the worst.
Just basic decency. I should have kept an eye on the mail while she wasn't there but thought her family had it handled.
Oh fun story update: the real estate agent didn't even show up. Haven't heard from him or the guy I called who said he'd get the guy to give me a call with an idea of what time he'd be here. Good job, MICM!
This little idiot was fighting his reflection outside my work today. Highlight of my shithouse day!
Who won?
I did haha, I shooed old mate away before he gave himself a complex hahaha I have a video as well that I'll see if I can share at some point lol
I don't know exactly where it came from, I think someone may have said it came from reality TV, but something about the phrase "I love that for you" just hits me the wrong way. I understand the meaning and the sentiment, but it just hits my ear as condescending or with a hint of snark.
"It's not good enough for me and I would never choose it but it's good enough for you because you are lesser than me"
It’s like “good for you”…..
It's supposed to be condescending isn't it? Woops, I've always used "I love that for you" as a backhanded insult.
Otherwise I'd say "that's amazing, I'm really happy for you!" if I was genuine.
My job interview last week was hilarously bad. This is the low salary, no negotiating! We work from home on the down low because overseas HQ does not approve, it's not in the company's culture. You will be the only person in your team for all of AU and NZ, anyone who can support you is located overseas. There's 4 (FOUR) rounds of interviews, so get ready! And don't mention WFH in the interview with overseas HQ because they'll get offended by the request. So many red flags, no wonder the job ad has been up / reposted for months.
they are paying you less and pocketing the difference
Needed some shelving. Ordered from kmart. Kinda needed some other things, and wanted to get up to the free shipping threshold so I got some plastic drawers and a laundry hamper.
Meant to be delivered on the 15th, but the order couldn't be picked up for some reason. Fast forward to today and it gets picked up and delivered... Everything except the shelving. The main reason for the order.
Bah. Refund was quick though. So that's nice.
What style of shelving? Wallmount or freestanding?
I've decked 3/4 walls in my room with twintrack shelving. It requires screws in the walls but lasts forever and can be reconfigured. Bunnings sells it, shelvingshop.com.au is a bit cheaper (but you still have to go to Bunnings for the wooden shelf boards).
Of course not necessarily an option if renting.
Yeah, I'm renting. Went for a freestanding cheap thing with shoe compartments.
My room is also slightly larger than a walk-in closet, so I don't have many free walls available anyway.
ooo what's the weight limit on their twintrack? I'm looking at putting some in the garage - not gonna be holding superheavy things, but would like a bit of beef.
edit: loool I look at their page and it's literally all garage images good one leya.
Sky prettiest it's been all day.
Still in bed with my laptop 🥱 I don't have the energy to get up but I need food 😢
Noticed lamb has become a lot cheaper recently. Even the pricier cuts like cutlets.
Sounds like trouble.
Edit Vic:
Oh man... it looked like good news with marginally cheaper food (assuming supermarkets pass the savings on - which they won't) but this just feels ominous.
Along with the talk about the grids I'm worried for summer.
That’s actually really sad. Reducing/banning live exports is a good thing. But surely the extra sheep could be processed and sold, it’s so wasteful when so many people would benefit from it either here or overseas. Also like many people I guess I’m a contributor, because I’ve been including more vegetarian meals in my diet. This is not a bad thing for people to be doing, but surely the industry could adjust in a less wasteful way? It just seems wrong.
I've seen this dial thingy, but I don't understand what it means nor what to do to "improve" it.
It told me I was 20 - so I figured it was full of shit anyway. 😂
Just got a text 5 minutes ago from my real estate agency saying I have a routine inspection today between 10-5:30pm and asks if I'll be home. It was sent in short code format so I can't reply, there's no phone number included, it's the first I'm hearing about an inspection and it's from a name who isn't listed on the real estate "our team" site. It's legit though.
Called the guy who I think is my property manager (last one who emailed me, in October, about January's price increase) and he said the guy is new, suggested maybe it was my fault that I may have missed a message (I didn't) and asked if it was ok if they come today.
MICM doesn't quite have the customer service they used to. I don't love this for me.
meet 'em at the door advise them they've not given advance notice goodbye I always liked to waste their time
"new guy" isnt' an excuse, this is basic law.
Honestly I doubt it'd be much of an inconvenience for the guy. He probably has a few to do in this building today. I'm home and I have my shit together now and keep on top of maintaining a clean apartment so unexpected visitors don't require me to freak out and whirlwind clean like a maniac so I just said sure, whatever, but wanted to make a note that they didn't give me notice. They don't care.
Looks like it's 'twerk in speedos tuesday' at bull's house today.
That outta learn them
sir, those are my emotional support twerkers
Congrats?!
Are we that old that people don't get 80's references any more?
I thought it was funny. 😔
Um rice cakes/corn cakes $2.80 at Moles. No thanks. I'll just panic buy next time at Helldi.
Learning new things at work and being praised for my intelligence is making my head explode with imposter syndrome, just want to crawl into a little hole and not have a shit ton of people watching me.
Found these on the specials shelf. You mean to say they're not selling well?? No way!
Greens mixes are usually pretty good. Just sayin'.
Take the challenge
I'm doing it. I'm gonna listen to the new Andre 3000 album
EDIT: This really is a flute album, hey...
The first song is called "I swear, I Really Wanted To Make a "Rap" Album But This Is Literally The Way The Wind Blew Me This Time"
https://open.spotify.com/track/1lbjDy6IIerHFGZWKG0hno?si=31acd47a58d349cf
Word. Thanks for sharing, didn’t know this had happened. I think my favourite part is the rolling stone review:
"André 3000 is a kind, gentle, creative soul, that’s been marred by our collective capitalist greed. Let this man play his bass clarinet across America in peace" - Rolling Stone
I listened to the last track, couldn’t pass up a dungeon reference. It has a mood, might be worth listening to the rest I skimmed through.
I forgot I was half watching/listening to a creative talk and came back from lunch to this tiny woman in the corner of my screen ( I popped the vid out and made the video window very very small), thought I'd left myself in a meeting or had someone watching me.....
Boss: I'm terrible with emails. Send me a message on teams when you send an email
Me: sends msg on teams to let boss know I've emailed
Boss: "why are you following up so quickly after sending an email? 🙂"
The smiley makes me crawl up the wall and also what do you want me to do boss????
“You asked me to send you a message on Teams too when I send an email because you said on _ that you are bad at emails 😊👍”
Sounds like your boss needs to grow up and stop treating you like a butler. It’s a basic work expectation to manage your own emails.
About to attempt air frying my steak for dinner with some homemade chips. I’m not sure about this but internet says it can be done.
Let us know how it turns out.
it wasn’t too bad. A touch overcooked because it takes longer than frying and so was guessing the cooking time, could have used a minute or two less. The flavour is not as good as frying for me. The homemade chips slapped though.
I've done steak in the airfryer. I like it, takes a little bit longer than a pan but it's nice.
Would love pics. Curious how it will look, particularly the outside
Off to see what other music treasures I can find at the opshop. 😊
I found some old Melodiya and Supraphon LPs, these are old Soviet record companies. Peer Gynt by the Moscow Radio Orchestra . Awesome. And new music to me, Rimsky-Korsakoff The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh is a surprise. This is lively and interesting. There's one record with a label I can't read, will have to look it up. Also found another Menuhin record, which I haven't play yet.
I like the serendipity of finding new things. :)
Here's a cover ,
This is the greatest YouTube video I've seen in quite some time. Fascinating, inspiring, funny.. this Bobby Fingers guy might be one of the most interesting people in the world: Jeff Bezos Rowing Boat
I might have to go and watch some of his older videos.
that was really great 👍

What would be the best thing to paint newly cut chipboard with to lock in the VOCs from any formaldehyde glues....? There are products that come up in a search, but nothing local that I can find.
"Locking in" VOCs smells suspicious and possibly scammy. A lot of VOC molecules are small and volatile (as per the name), so they will diffuse through thin layers of things like paint.
Paints emit VOCs too FWIW.
It might be better to ask a chemistry forum, they'll be able to give you reasonable answers and suggestions, not hearsay (like what I'm giving) or marketing (what the salesmen say).
In the mean time if you're worried about VOCs: ventilation prevents buildup, reducing exposure.
Yeah These are shelves in a cupboard in a bedroom. Difficult to ventilate.
Weekend weather doesn't look too good hey. I'm renting a car all day Friday for various appointments and errands (so excited to drive again after 6 weeks!!) and thought of extending it to Saturday but maybe not.
Partner encountered this spider on the laundry this arvo. Does anyone have any idea what it is? The pointy abdomen is really weird (she says it's not an egg sac)
Listening to a really really old LP of opera love songs. They don't sound gentle or loving. 😟
Pat told me love is a battlefield.
I said no such thing. 🤭

Ahhhhh! on the fence about having a second day off sick, could go either way but time is ticking and I can't chooose
I know the difficulty of this. Being sick (or slightly sick or tired from recovery) puts you in the worst position possible to try and make these decisions. Shouldn't a fit person be making important decisions like this?
I vote staying home and resting, so you can work better tomorrow.
Ooof, same here.
I was working off site on Monday and my bus passed by the office so I thought I'd be clever and drop my laptop off at the office to save myself lugging it home and back the next day.
I think my immune system knew I'd done that, because over the next 6 hours I got rapidly unwell. Woke up this morning crook as a dog, co-worker is happy to pick up the day to day slack as I did the same for her last week - but now my laptop is stuck at the office and I have project work that desperately needs doing. I'm probably just well enough to pop into the office for an hour to grab the laptop. But I'm probably not well enough to be within 1.5m of another person. Certainly not in my office, all 4 of us that work there are immunocompromised. Plus I don't drive so I definitely shouldn't be bringing my germs onto the bus.
It's pretty boring being stuck at home alone sick with no computer.
I might feel so much better tomorrow, this bug came on so quick it might leave just as fast. but I really need to decide now because I'll either have to cancel my class on Thursday and Friday, or organise a sub now.
