  • Ok that picture is wonderful.

  • Let me guess: it did fine for a few years until everyone had tried it once?

Now I'm torn between wanting to get it once before it closes to see what it is like and just not because apparently it is crap.

  • On reddit's military forum, there are stories there of some ANZAC day memorial services themselves were excluding modern veterans, claiming the day isn't about them.

As the son of a Vietnam vet, and grandson of an OG Anzac, I say that's the stupidest take I've ever heard. And I've heard people say Anzac day is dumb for glorifying war.

Imagine if WWII vets were excluded because they were never a part of the original Anzac campaign? It's unfathomable. There has never been an exclusion of any veterans in the Anzac movement. Even post Vietnam when returning vets were unpopular, they were a part of Anzac marches (it was controversial at first because it was a very unpopular war).

  • I'm in a cast. This sucks. Only silver lining is I get tomorrow off. Imagine getting a 5-day medical certificate, but four of those days are public holidays already. 😢

I don't see the issue with a party after midday. Yes, ANZAC day is a special day for remembering troops - in the morning. The afternoon is for celebration.

Two-up games, beers at the RSL, annual AFL Match with Essendon and Collingwood. Go ahead and have a dance party as well. What's the issue?

Yes, I'd have serious problems with it if they were holding it in the morning. But the party was scheduled for 6pm. Go nuts boys and girls, have your party.

Honestly, did anyone outside politicians actually have an issue with this?

  • I agree with your first statement, but disagree with the rest. I am not their target market. I enjoy playing their games, but primarily because I am spending time with the kids as I do. Not many of their games are targeted to my demographic.

I disagree that they focus only on digital. Every single Nintendo game comes out on a physical chip. And sales on digital copies are rare and minor (30% off maybe). It is often cheaper to get a physical copy on sale cheaper than digital. And you can then sell it / buy it second-hand. I've read that with Switch 2, even the digital codes can be transferred to a new owner. Nintendo for all their faults have never forced you to lock in a digital library you can never resell.

  • The problem is the standard apps are just that - standard. I can hop onto any Redhat, Debian or Solaris 10 box at work and use ls, cat etc.

If I went all-in on some bespoke alternatives on my special snowflake machine, I'd constantly be going nuts entering incorrect commands on remote machines and losing efficiency. Then, I'd go back to just using the standard commands everywhere.

  • I bought it second hand. Nintendo got $0 from the sale. In fact, two thirds of our physical games have been purchased second hand.

  • You might be surprised. I came to the Switch party super late when I bought my kid a switch Christmas 2023. He's all over Zelda now, has BotW, TotK and even Skyward Sword on his Switch. For him, these games are all from the last year. He turned 2 the year BotW was released.

It'll be the same story with Switch 2. Some kid who might not even be born yet will get a Switch 2 in 8-9 years and come across these games with all his school friends.

I doubt I'll go the Switch 2 path with the kids. I haven't seen a reason to upgrade, yet. I'm thinking of the Steam Deck - while the Nintendo had a fairly cheap entry point to get on the platform, I've spent enough on games to negate the difference between a Switch and a Steam Deck - where I already have a 500+ game library to play on it.

  • As art, the Kebab is not world shaking. But it is more than art, it's a piece of Perth. Ideally I'd like to see it restored. But if it has to be replaced, then it should be replaced by something that is/will be another part of Perth.

The 'I've got these statues in 12 countries on 5 continents' guy gets bragging rights, Perth gets to be a statistic in his story. I don't think this is a fair deal. The astronaut would be a part of that guy's story. Not Perth's.

  • You don't have to vote. You only need to get your name crossed off. You are then able to just leave if you really want.

And while those 'how to vote cards' (and their pushers) are annoying if you don't need or want them, they do help people get something close to their wishes down on the ballot.

  • I lived in Bilinga for five years of my childhood. So I know exactly where you are.

  • This bit of shrinkflation amounts to a 20% price rise. For what is already a luxury/occasional purchase.

Err, I'll take the big one thanks, Aldi. And I probably won't be buying this treat very often any longer.

  • Some nerd like me will be affected by this one day and then script up something that emails them from 10,000 different email addresses that all bounce. Pollute their database.

  • It's hard to say whether we are having a moment, or if we are paying extra attention. Another name to keep an eye on: Luke Webber. He's only 13/14, but has taken out the 200m and 400m state records as well as taking out the 100m final (just didn't break the record doing it).

They don't do Nationals at his age, so he went and ran against kids a year older. Still won.

  • The dietician has taken ham and salami off my wife's menu to address cholesterol. It should likely apply to me also, but I'm not organised enough to book things like "check ups" and dieticians. So I bought a large whole chook last weekend and we roasted it. It's going into sandwiches this week (and will likely be a weekly thing for the foreseeable future) instead of ham/salami. So far, everyone likes the change. It works out far cheaper also: over 2kg of chook is about he prices of 500g of ham/salami.

  • So I was the pied piper on the weekend and took a troop of kids to see the Minecraft Movie. It was an experience.
The movie itself was pretty typical middle-aged kids' fare. Fairly awful dialogue and cliched characters. Jason Moama was a surprise, I thought Jack Black was the only famous star in it. I have a feeling that in the right role, Jason would have some wonderful comedy chops. This movie was not it. Stiffler's Mum was funny, but all I could see was Stiffler's Mum. I think the two female leads were great and a good foil for the Jack Black/Jason Moama antics. Pity the girls didn't really have a lot to do in the plot.

If I'd been watching it on Blu Ray or streaming, I might have turned it off. As a movie, it's not great. However, watching it in a cinema on opening weekend in a room full of kids really made it wonderful. They were cheering at obvious fan-service references that I didn't get. Screaming out at "Chucky Chicken!" and I can't remember other bits. But you get the idea. The energy in the room was great.

So while I didn't particularly love the movie, I loved the experience of watching it.

  • Amaze! Jazz hands!

  • It's fascinating how some of these questions are phrased.

Should Australia spend more or less on its military?

I have no idea what Australia spends on its military. I don't know whether it's too much or insufficient. I wouldn't feel qualified to answer this question, so I abstained.

But abstaining from this question appears to have affected my compass result. It appears to read it the same as "about the same". Which isn't what I said or meant. There are a few I abstained from and I think that by doing so, it has put me a lot closer to center than is probably accurate.

I used to think of myself as fairly central. Only "central" has seemed to move over the past 20 years and while I don't think I've changed all that much, I'm considered more left these days than I used to be.

  • Do we have this chart for just WA? Because it feels like we were well above average. It hit 40⁰ a week or so ago, and that whole week was 35⁰+.

  • Ha! A day later, I see the thing! It's real all right:

With a kid in Little Athletics, I've taken an interest in junior track and field this year. I've been following Gout's antics for about six months, now.

At 16 (almost 17), He just ran the fastest 200m time by an Australian sprinter, ever.

    https://youtu.be/bjb4ku7GeLc

For the record, he also ran a 100m in 10.04 this year.

What do you want for Christmas?

This is my thinly-veiled request for Christmas ideas for a bunch of people I need to buy presents for - some of whom I don't see all that often and know all that well. I thought it'd be handy to have a thread of present ideas that we can all crowd-source off each other. The best ideas are going to be neat stuff that people won't know exists and won't have already bought for themselves. I'll end up getting some people obvious stuff like alcohol and nice chocolates. Those aren't really he ideas I'm looking for.

I don't want to make rules, but I think we need a couple:

    1. Let's at least cap them at $50. Telling people you want a Drone, a Steam Deck or PS5 simply isn't realistic. I'm not looking for ideas in that price range (even though I'd probably love all these, myself).
    2. Avoid intimate stuff. I'm not talking sex toys (though avoid those too - I'm not buying my sister-in-law a dildo), but more things that are really personal like jewellery, watches and stuff that you need to know t

Commonwealth Bank to charge customers $3 'withdrawal fee' to access their own cash

I hope this inspires a massive migration off CBA and a rollback of the policy. Because if it doesn't, the other banks will be sure to follow.

Our US friends see the Olympic Medal table differently

I stumbled across a sports article from a US publication and thought it interesting that it showed the USA leading the medals table.

Instead of the regular table that gives weight to Gold, silver and bronze, they just see total medals.

I sorta like it. Celebrating all medal winners equally is nice. It feels a little like fudging the numbers, though.

So, I've just done something that I said I'd be reluctant to do in future without community consultation and blocked an instance.

I don't think anyone will have any issues with it, but I figured I'd let everyone know since this executive decision affects all aussie.zone users.

Kids are free at the footy rounds 16-19

    cross-posted from: https://aussie.zone/post/11231353

If you have a kid/grandkid who loves footy, this is the time of year to take them. A single adult can take three kids to a game for the price of one ticket.

For me today, the adult ticket was $58. With two kids, that worked out at less than $20 a ticket.

Take your own snacks. Prices at the footy are actually offensive.

Just when you thought you'd made it through the holidays. 😀

I think a half-day strike is just as bad for parents than a full one. We still need to arrange for the kids to be taken care of until 12:30. Apparently we can send them in anyway, but they won't be in class and it isn't exactly supporting the teachers to do that.

I hope there is progress in the negotiations and the strike gets called off.

A mere 57 mega polluters produce 80 per cent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, new analysis shows

On the one hand, it makes it really hard to stay motivated with the teeny contribution I make to reducing emissions.
On the other, think of how much of a difference these 57 companies could make if they actually reached net-zero targets.
