Late January, I had to step away from the project for a while to deal with some family stuff. That's resolved, but try as I might, I just cannot force myself to get back into development mode on this.

Concepts

What's "federation"?

In easy terms; it's a concept where instances seamlessly integrate with each other. Users can talk to each other and participate in their communities. For example, my account is on lemm.ee and the community i am posting to is on slrpnk.net, yet i feel no friction.

What's an instance?

An instance is a server running software, with users, and communities, etc. (Each of these is like a mini-reddit/twitter/etc!) The software part is important, since instances can either be forums, microblogs, video-sharing sites, etc etc. And they can all interact with each other!

What's the "fediverse"?

The fediverse (federation + universe) is a coalition of federated instances running all types of different software, so a user from a forum instan

Most frontends (I don't know any, really) doesn't allow you to set a default language for your post. For that reason, a lot of frontends allow you to post without any language selected, while defaulting to English. But that is not universally true. Photon recently started requiring language to be selected and started defaulting to Undetermined language. This now creates unnecessary friction when the community doesn't have it as allowed language and requires the user to select allowed language for every single post.

It really is a simple change on your end that will take you seconds, but can save a lot of time in the long run and some frustration for people that want to post in your communities.

On lemmy-ui frontend you can change it by going to community settings and under languages you can select multiple ones by holding Ctrl key.

P.S. This community is a great example of one that doesn't allow Undetermined language.

Heyho! With Lemmy version v0.19.4 alt texts for image posts got finally added to Lemmy.

Apps and web frontends such as Jerboa, Voyager, Photon and the standard web UI have now the option to provide alt text for an image post and to display alt texts.

Ani.Social and Lemmy.World federation issues

Due to federation issues between Ani.Social and Lemmy.World caused by geographic distance, Ani.Social has been relocated from Asia to Europe.

Ani.Social was first moved to US on May 12 because EU providers like to ask for my passport and electricity bills. But even in the US, Ani.Social still could not keep up with Lemmy.World. Thankfully, there are smaller server providers in the EU that don't ask for my birth certificate so we migrated there a little over 24 hours ago.

The chart below shows Ani.Social is now on par with other servers in terms of Lemmy.World activity queue in the past 24 hours.

Moving Ani.Social to a region closer Lemmy.World was a last resort option because I'd like to have my servers close to me and to avoid centralizing Lemmy servers in US/EU. However, because [a potential fix app

I've searched but couldn't find any discussion on this topic, so I apologize if it's been answered before.

Would the admins consider hosting the Alexandrite and Photon front-ends, e.g. at a.lemm.ee and p.lemm.ee?

I am in the opinion that some alternative UIs should be available on the instance (domain) – if possible, of course. Lemmy.world already has many alt. UIs, I think we should have something like that. So, here's a list:

• Alexandrite – a nice modern one
• MLMYM – a familiar old-reddit–style one
• Nemmy
• Photon – sleek af
• Slemmy – again, a modern one
• Lemmy Modern UI – web default UI, but better

Das interfaces alternativas o Photon foi a que eu mais gostei, tem algumas funcionalidades interessantes (tipo favoritar/pinar comunidades) mas com uma interface mais simples que a do Alexandrite por ex.

Greetings everybody! Slrpnk.net now has two Admins! On the 16th of October @poVoq gave me admin privileges, and I'm now involved in approving applications, responding to report tickets, and coordinating with other instance administrators.
