  • You're demand is really weird let me explain you a bit :

    • Proxmox and CasaOS are mainly use for servers
    • MX Linux and Windows are the opposite

So my first question is what will be this machine?

The second important question is why using Proxmox and CasaOS?

Proxmox is a hypervisor (a type 1 hypervisor) basically it's like VMware or virtualbox (that you run as app in your OS), but has the place here as the main OS. CasaOS on the other side is a bit different, it's more an user friendly self hosting service. So you cannot really use the both if the machine is meant to be a server.

And lastly sure you can dual boot windows and MX Linux (even if windows will surely eat your MX Linux partition, and wouldn't recommended it). But again you cannot really use your PC as a server and as a home at the same time ;-)

  • Permanently Deleted

  • Snowflake is a bit like a bridge so you only transport encrypted traffic to the tor network and no one knows what's in

The only requirements is to live in a place that is not blocked from Tor (and don't a low data plan)

  • Great job, keep your motivation!

But you shouldn't use any apple product, they are as bad for privacy as using Google's one. Do not use an iPhone (lineageos is pretty good to use), do not use Apple's services... And keep going

The new 3B "fully open source" model from AMD

This is again a big win on the red team at least for me. They developed a "fully open" 3B parameters model family trained from scratch on AMD Instinct™ MI300X GPUs.

AMD is excited to announce Instella, a family of fully open state-of-the-art 3-billion-parameter language models (LMs) [...]. Instella models outperform existing fully open models of similar sizes and achieve competitive performance compared to state-of-the-art open-weight models such as Llama-3.2-3B, Gemma-2-2B, and Qwen-2.5-3B [...].

As shown in this image (https://rocm.blogs.amd.com/_images/scaling_perf_instruct.png) this model outperforms current other "fully open" models, coming next to open weight only models.

A step further, thank you AMD.

PS : not doing AMD propaganda but thanks them to help and contribute to the Open Source World.

VPN as the day of today?

Are VPN good for privacy today, should we used them to protect our privacy?

Not free, none have all advantages and wouldn't let my ISP only know my traffic so these times I'm really overwhelmed by all of this

Used Tor for a bit but it's not practically useful, slow (okay but not the main problem) and blocked by a lot of websites..

Maybe a chain of VPN could be good? I really don't know, can you help me?

Basically I don't want to have no protection but don't think VPNs are really the solution...

PS: maybe a rented machine with self hosted like VPN could be good?

    UPS problem... Again

I've an UPS but it's not working fine. Disassembled it a bit and tested components that I could without unsoldering, everything seems good. Then the problem is :

    • Normally I should be able to connect the batteries and the UPS would just be in "sleep" mode, the screen would be fully light up but the UPS should be off
    • The problem here is that firstly when I plug batteries the fan turns on, it should not and only turned on when on batteries but when the UPS is on
    • The second problem is that the screen doesn't work as intended. This is a screen that has prewritten zone that just have to be lighted up (don't know the name of this kind of screens, the type like in digital clock), here only the backlight is lighted up (normally all the possible drawing are lighted up too), but quickly it begins to drop in lightness to turn black at the end (the fan continues running)

Check the batteries they are 2 x 12V at 12.6V here

    Thanks for your answer

EDIT : on the photo the two blue and brown

    Opinion on the Matrix protocol

Is matrix good to use, seen a lot of drama around it. For example hackliberty.org left it because of lacking of security and moderation, do you still recommended it?

    Switching out UPS batteries

I have an UPS with two 12v 7ah lead batteries. If I want to change the batteries I would typically go with lead batteries but here's my question, can I use some portable mobile power banks to use it?

Because I have a 20000mah "INUI" lithium power bank that is rated for 12v at 1.5A, is it a good practice to buy several of these (since they are about 20 bucks) disassemble them and use them as ups batteries?

    EDIT : clarifications

    Riello UPS issues

I've got a used riello ups recently and it was not working since the beginning. The UPS was switching to batteries most of the time, but sometimes it just don't switch to batteries and makes a continuous beep (riello manual tells that it's a UPS fault anything except an overload).

I left it 2 weeks without using it. But know it won't start at all. Don't have the materials to test components for now but what are your ideas? (Even when plugged in the wall it wouldn't start)

    Maybe batteries or faulty ups

    Thx

UPS and servers : simulated sine wave good?

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/24328274

    Hey I need your help.

Recently I bought a Riello NPW 2000 that output a "pseudo-sinusoidal" wave when running on battery the fact is that I read on the web that modern servers could have problems with it.
Mostly right, as I found that my server (poweredge t430) is not running good with it. When unplugging the power to test the UPS sometimes it make the server just power off and reboot (as said in the bios, turn on when power goes on again) or it put the ups in safety mode (continuous beep).
Tried disabling the PFC in IDRAC settings, as far I haven't noticed power off issues but only safety mode issues with the UPS... (So in fact the server power off, but will never go on battery)

In both cases the server is running fine on battery the issues are just happening when switching.

If anyone has an idea.. Thank you

After research I found that the server never turns off when disabling PFC but will eventually make the UPS goes into fa

    My thoughts on docker

    Hello! 😀
I want to share my thoughts on docker and maybe discuss about it!
Since some months I started my homelab and as any good "homelabing guy" I absolutely loved using docker. Simple to deploy and everything. Sadly these days my mind is changing... I recently switch to lxc containers to make easier backup and the xperience is pretty great, the only downside is that not every software is available natively outside of docker 🙃
But I switch to have more control too as docker can be difficult to set up some stuff that the devs don't really planned to.
So here's my thoughts and slowly I'm going to leave docker for more old-school way of hosting services. Don't get me wrong docker is awesome in some use cases, the main are that is really portable and simple to deploy no hundreds dependencies, etc. And by this I think I really found how docker could be useful, not for every single homelabing setup, and it's not my case.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I let you talk abou

How to use LXC containers in Proxmox?

Hello, have setup my proxmox server since some weeks recently I found that LXC containers could be useful as it really separate all my services in differents containers. Since then I figured out to move my docker's services from a vm into several LXC containers. I ran into some issues, the first one is that a lot of projects run smoother in docker and doesn't really have a "normal" way of being package... The second thing is related to the first one, since they are not really well implemented into the OS how can I make the updates?
So I wonder how people are deploying their stuffs on LXC proxmox's containers?
    Thanks for your help!

EDIT : Tried to install docker upon debian LXC but the performances were absolutely terrible...

How do you do to install Drupal 11 on debian?

In extend to my previous post :https://lemmy.ml/post/22320175

I cannot install drupal 11 on a fresh Debian install, in fact I tried everything and it's no more the fault of proxmox, but the PHP installation.

Drupal 11 needs php 8.3 to work, but Debian official repos go only to php 8.2, so I used the sury.org Debian repo to install the latest PHP version. And this is the start of the problem, this install gives me the error shown in the other post, exhausted memory.

I search in the info.php, memory related stuff, and the only difference between the "official" PHP (8.2) and sury one is that in the mysqldn section it shows statistics to yes. But I don't know how to disable it...

    Any ideas? Thanks 😉

Need help with a fresh drupal install

    Crossposted from : https://lemmy.ml/post/22319676

I just install a complete new Drupal install in a Debian VM inside proxmox, everything works as intended, but I cannot add content to it(it gives me a 500 error).

Apache logs show me that the memory is exhausted, search online, no real answer, tried a lot of thing in PHP.ini, .htaccess… At first the VM had 1 vcpu and 1GB of RAM, not working, I’ve put the PHP memory limit to 1GB, give 8GB to the vm, and 4vcpu. Not working, just “loading” the 500 longer.

Error got into /var/log/apache2/error.log : PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 262144 bytes)) in Unknown on line 0. This is why I give the vm 8GB and change php memory_limit to 1GB but it did nothing…

Have no solutions, as now. If you have one please let me know! thanks 🙂

EDIT: this is not the problem of drupal 11, tried to install it with drupal 10, same result, I think it has something to do with proxmox

    How to have inter-VMs alerts?

Hey, I've setup a promox server and running some stuffs in it, and basically I want to know how to have alerts notifications that goes from one service to another, for example : I'm running NUT on proxmox shell, and I want to have an alert in Truenas (and in NextCloud running in Truenas) to say that the server will shutdown soon to the users that are actually using my cloud. My #1 recommandation for messenger, as the day of today

Just a post to say the goods of using SimpleX instead of others "private" messenger. First it doesn't not require any id, phone number, etc... Can create how many accounts that you want! Decentralized servers, everyone can run and use own servers, and communicate with others! Big privacy side! Look at this one of the best https://privacyspreadsheet.com/messaging-apps. The only negative is the usability of the app, this is why it needs support and be democratize to gain attraits to people, and maybe one day be one the most used messenger app...

    AI surveillance

For the Paris 2024 Olympics, the city got the "right" to use the AI surveillance technology in the street. As we thought, they are going to keep this as long as they can.

We need to do something against this IRL mass surveillance, going every day more into our private life

Help me with QubeOS (as beginner)

Hello, I'm beginner to QubeOS and I don't know really how to use it properly. I'm not really an absolute beginner in Linux (running it since 2 years), but I've never tried it and these I wanna try so installed it 2 days ago. At first it's very good, not laggy, etc.. It's what I want! But today I want to really set this thing up for every day use, but it's not really convenient to use for some of my use cases. So I need your help for global tips to use the system and for my use cases :

    • Never really liked use the default Firefox ESR + hardening, used the flatpak app of Mullvad, basically I want to know the way of installing apps
    • Want to set up "hacking" lab, mainly Kali or Parrot and other to use with the networking to "hack" them, basically I want to run multiples VMs

    Thank you guys 😁
