Holy, don't get me started on ChromeOS.

Ah, thank you!

Credit Unions are the way to go unless you're looking for high-yield and brokerage accounts. Sorry that happened.

But then why have the collection if one mod decides who can go into it. What if, example, [email protected] allows military tech posts, but the collection "tech" does not. What happens?

The problem with this is who decides which communities can post into the feed. Who moderates it? What if the moderator of the feed and the moderator of the community have a disagreement on rules? If the communities can only follow the rules of the feed what's the point of having the feed and not a community?
You could add a Topic Selection to community creation, but who removes communities that don't fit into it? A voting system? Who gets to vote?

I'm really starting to dislike Google recently. The amount of things that simply don't work after their Gemini integration has me fuming. I have a pixel tablet I mainly use as a smart hub, Me: "Hey Google, what's the weather like today", Assistant: "I don't know". What do you mean you don't know? That's the one question you ever get asked.
Google switches an old system for something new, releases it half-baked, and never parodies the features.

My Savior!

What was the community called for growing the fediverse?
Title. I swear I subscribed but now I can't find it. It was something like fedigrow I think. Could someone link it?

That First Red Child

We're entering a new era. In our lifetime, we'll likely witness the first human footprint on Martian soil. Imagine that moment, the grainy images beamed back, the hushed awe as a flag bearing the symbol of humanity, is planted in the rust-colored dust. But while the first person on Mars is quickly approaching, the first child born on Mars... that's a question that echoes across the decades, perhaps even centuries. It's a question burdened with ethical dilemmas and logistical nightmares.
The First Martian
Let's paint a picture. Envision a small, pressurized habitat nestled in the ochre plains of Mars. Inside, a team of scientists, doctors, engineers, the vanguard of humanity's Martian expedition, diligently work. Decades have passed since the first colonists arrived. The initial rush of exploration has given way to the slow, methodical work of establishing a permanent presence. And then, it happens. A new life emerges; the first Martian.
Suddenly, the theoretical becomes intense

The Paradox of Pork: What is the value of existence?

Imagine a world where humans never gained a taste for meat. No succulent steaks, no sizzling bacon, no crispy fried chicken. Sounds like it'd be a vegetarians's paradise, right? No senseless slaughter, and a gentler world.
But this gets weird quickly. Think about it: No demand for meat means no livestock industry. No pigs, cows, or chickens were bred and raised for our plates. That still sounds good, you say... But then, fewer animals would exist and would have existed
Virginia Woolf wryly observed,
Of all the arguments for Vegetarianism none is so weak as the argument from humanity. The pig has a stronger interest than anyone in the demand for bacon. If all the world were Jewish, there would be no pigs at all.
Suddenly, you're not just thinking about the animals spared from suffering, but the animals that would never exist in the first place. Billions of potential lives, snuffed out before they even begin. And that's where the philosophical wormhole opens up. Is it bett

100k Players Pick A Number 1-1000: What Number Avoids Elimination?

Imagine a game with 100,000 participants. Each person must choose a whole number between 1 and 1,000. The goal? To be the only person to choose your specific number. Anyone who chooses the same numbers will be eliminated.
So, what number do you choose to maximize your chances of being the sole survivor?
This isn't a simple guessing game. It's a fascinating puzzle that blends probability and a bit of game theory.

All 3 communities are ran by UniversalMonk. Others are welcome to create ones as well.

Yes surprisingly. I haven't advertised at all yet, but we had 8 people join.

SERVER ISSUES 2/8/2025 6:30am CST

From what I'm aware of, lemmyusa has been experiencing issues for a few hours up to 3 days as of 6:30am CST. I'm not sure when these issues began.
ISSUES:
- Users experience delayed access and/or receive a 504 error when loading into the webpage.
UPDATES:
- All issues resolved. The cause remains unknown. Since usage is likely lower following this event, I'll be using the next few hours to update to lemmy version 0.19.8. This post will be updated when the service is back running.
- 2/8/25 8:03am CST | As expected many things broke. Everything should be up and running as of now, there may be a few briefs periods of downtime throughout the next day or so, but everything is operational. I've went ahead and upgraded the server hardware as well. Cheers!
CURRENT STATUS: RUNNING

Plenty of people in this comment section aren't condemning death threats and are advocating to kill them.
Biases are subtle and the way you address those mentioned leads me to believe you'd completely ignore any information given. Your hesitation to self-inform does the same. Have a nice one.

You are not asking in good faith given you chose to address the victims as "elons minions" and not as real people.

You've made up something which I've never said. Government workers address, cellphone numbers, and email addresses are not publicly available. What does Elon Musk have to do with this?

That's not justification. "If they do it we can do it". If lose your morals in an effort to "get even", what makes one any better than the other?

"Scapegoat". Do you think death threats towards others is acceptable? It's easier to completely end discussion of those you mentioned rather than police every thread and remove threats.

It's not when they were calling for interns of government agencies death. What's scary is no one here is looking for context.

No? You can't just call for people's death and leak their info. It's actually illegal, that's why they got temp banned.

Gets me excited for light no fire.

This thing is DOA, Samsung doesn't have the same rabid fan base as Apple. Headsets just don't work for productivity, they're still too bulky. You can ignore it while you're swinging your arms playing pistol whip, but not when you're looking at a spreadsheet.

All I take from this is that you're distraught I don't agree with you.

Welcome!
I'll be monitoring performance of the coming months and will make upgrades as necessary.

Custom themes not showing up?
I'm trying to install this theme on my instance, installed using docker. I've added
volumes:
- ./volumes/lemmy-ui/extra_themes:/app/extra_themes
to the docker-compose.yml so I could see the extra_themes folder. I've tried every combination of making folders, standalone .css, .scss in extra_themes, but I can't seem to get the theme to show up. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
