My criticism of #China #humanrights and #climate seems to rarely cause issues among the actual Chinese people I meet, both online and virtually.

Somehow, the only ones who get pissed out at me are #tankies, nearly all of whom (as far as I can tell) are white males.
A tactic long used by the #CCP against the family members of #Tibetan, #uyghur and other dissidents who have spoken out from abroad, has finally come to #HongKong.

While shocking, it was really only a matter of time before this happened.

@hendrik@sciences.social I certainly agree that the developed north is more responsible, at what point do we hold the largest consumer of coal and petroleum, the biggest investor in overseas coal-fired power plants, the largest holder of long-term LNG contracts also responsible?
Praising #China as a climate leader while it remains such a huge player in fossil fuel expansion is problematic.
@hendrik@sciences.social You can see some of that here - https://ourworldindata.org/co2-emissions
China has overtaken #Europe & #Japan on per-capita emissions, and will overtake #Europe soon on historical emissions (albeit with double the population).
#Australia is probably one of the worst in the world if you consider emissions from its fossil fuel exports alongside its tiny population.
Noticed that #climate groups in #Australia are even more extreme than those in the US and #Europe in their praise of #China #climatechange leadership (and silence on #humanrights)

Interesting, I noticed they'll call out #Japan for #LNG but somehow give a pass to the country that imports most of Australia's #coal &, oh yeah, is responsible for most LNG export growth, and has the most long-term #naturalgas contracts.
It's so blatant that I wouldn't be surprised if its actually propaganda.
@Zachariah @lopar49 I used Openphone a few years ago, and it was terrible. Lots of SMS never came through, didn't work for OTPs (even though they claimed it would), terrible customer service. Despite it being more complex technically, JMP.Chat is much, much better.
#TNI #TransnationalInstitute is a group that mostly releases great reports, analysis, etc, on #techgiants, #capitalism #resourcecolonialism #labor etc

But when it comes to #China, they'll somehow willingly publish pro-CCP propaganda-lite, factually dubious BS like this, romanticizing the #Mao era, regurgitating South-South solidarity talk points & of course, ignoring the #CCP's glaring similarities to Israel in its treatment of #Uyghurs #Tibetans & #HongKongers

@mkpetkova@mastodon.world thankfully I don't spend much time with western leftist these days, but that doesn't surprise me at all.
Sadly, see too much of the latter, here in Asia - support for Ukraine and then downplaying Israel's crimes.
Sad to see an account that was posting useful and relevant information about #Gaza and #Palestine was, apparently also regulary posting and promoting pro-#Russia and pro-#China propaganda.

Interesting, I never encounter people with these kinds of contradictory beliefs in real life. Only online. Which makes me wonder...

The #Thai people voted for #MoveForwardParty which had a strong #humanrights platform. They were NOT allowed to form a government, and were, in fact, forced to disband, as the oligarchs refused to cede power.
This decision doesn't' reflect the will of most Thais.
Absolutely terrible news right at the end of #RightsCon25 and and embarrassment for #Thailand and #SoutheastAsia.

My heart aches at the thought of what will happen to these #Uyghurs being sent into the hands of the #Chinese government.

@cabhan @wolfinthewoods I actually use both VOIP.ms and JMP.Chat. Useful to have two numbers, but also find the services complementary. If I had to choose one, probably would choose JMP.Chat as I like their mission and vision more, and its more user friendly.

This is quite an incredible read, a longform piece on #China's #energytransition that, despite being 5000+ words, had scant mention of #forced #labor, #humanrights violations, or the role of colonialism in resource-rich #Tibet and #Xinjiang, key to China's ability to produce cheap cleantech. Why only call out western imperialism but ignore Chinese imperialism?
From a European organization that does great work, but has a giant, China-sized, blindspot.

Took too long, but glad to see the United Nations #HCHR finally release a statement on the #Uyghurs exiles at risk of deportation to #China (and certain abuse or death) from #Thailand.

I realized, though, that's how a lot of people see many #humanrights issues. As a risk to be managed or avoided. Not a moral imperative and an issue that, frankly, should be front and central to any supply chain discussion on #cleanenergy
Imagine all the conversations if #China didn't block Chinese users from using every single widely used foreign app, platform, or social network.

Even #TikTok, remember, blocked interactions between Chinese users and those abroad. #RedNote will soon follow in creating that wall.
A good time to re-up my take on the #TikTok debate, calling for a different path proposal - mandate reciprocal access for any foreign platform entering a given market. More fair, more democratic &

In reality, 6 of 10 and 11 of the top 20 steelmakers are 🇨🇳. China produces 54% of the world's steel. Strange to exclude them but include tiny >50 🇯🇵Kobe Steel.

But when people say "no other country would get away with it" I wonder
Do they not know about what #Indonesia did to #EastTimor? What #India is doing to #Kashmir? What #China is doing to the #Uyghurs & #Tibetans? What #Russia did to #Chechnya?
We can debate intensity, impact, scale of atrocities, etc, but the idea that only Israel is getting away with committing crimes against humanity is naive ignorance.
@VeganCheesecake @pelletbucket probably the most ethical alternative is http://jmp.chat/. I use it and it works pretty well, though not as user friendly as big tech.
@helenslunch @furrowsofar I'm very happy with https://meet.coop - runs on BigBlueButton, secure and Open Source, but not free. But I don't mind paying for a good service.
@davehtaylor @sik0fewl you mean destroyed by Yahoo
@privacyfalcon9899 I've been using https://meet.coop/ for nearly 2 years, find it better than Zoom. Runs on BigBlueButton.
