"Ryan Zhou, the owner of a business making novelty gifts in eastern China, has been working flat out since April to open a new factory in an unfamiliar location: Dallas, Texas.
The 38-year-old has been pulling 14-hour shifts for weeks as he rushes to find warehouses, arrange shipping and obtain US work visas for his employees, with the new facility set to open in May.
Shifting production to the American South has been a complex process, but Zhou feels he has no choice: unless he can find a way to circumvent a crippling wave of US tariff hikes, his business may struggle to survive.“The United States accounts for nearly 95 per cent of our orders,” he said. “It’s not a market we can afford to lose.”
Zhou is far from alone. Chinese manufacturers across a wide range of sectors – from petrochemicals to printed mugs – have been quietly but rapidly moving to set up new American facilities in recent weeks, as they try to dodge the worst effects of an intensifying US-China trade war.

"After surprising analysts with its global rise in sales at the end of 2023, BYD has now raced ahead of Tesla—until recently the undisputed front-runner in EVs. As stock value and sales at Musk’s firm dropped last year, BYD has moved from success to success. In 2024, it sold a record of 4.3 million cars, with a 41 percent increase in sales. It now stands comfortably ahead of Tesla in the general category of new energy vehicles (NEVs), which comprises both Battery-Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs). According to the latest reports, it is now neck and neck with Tesla on BEV sales; 1,790,000 for Tesla and, just behind, 1,764,000 for BYD—a 12 percent increase from the previous year. With its current rates of year-on-year growth exceeding 50 percent, and with abundant untapped potential still remaining in the EV industry, it is reasonable to expect BYD overtaking Toyota as the world-leading car firm within the next decade.

"Obviously, Trump’s strategy is terrible: it’s not even clear what he wants. But a less inept administration would also be struggling. Over the decades, the US’s leverage to remake the global trading system — capital flows, advanced technology and access to its vast consumer market — has weakened relative to China. Barack Obama used to call the US the “indispensable nation”. In trade and tech terms that is increasingly untrue.
During the post-second world war Marshall Plan, the US created a largely Atlanticist political economy in western Europe. It offered not just financial Marshall Aid but also advanced technology, and access to its growing consumer market.
Those advantages have dissipated. US aid budgets have massively shrunk relative to China’s, and the so-called Department of Government Efficiency has more or less closed down their last vestiges in the US Agency for International Development.
The US, particularly under Joe Biden, worked hard to deprive China of advanced techno

"Another harsh reality is that China called Mr. Trump’s bluff and seems to have won this round. When Mr. Trump imposed his tariffs in the first term, President Xi Jinping retaliated with some restraint and sent a delegation to negotiate a trade deal.
This time he retaliated in tit-for-tat fashion and pushed all of his anti-U.S. economic and diplomatic levers. He has cut off U.S. access to crucial rare-earth minerals, stopped the delivery of Boeing jets, looked elsewhere for food and natural-gas imports, and unleashed regulators against American companies.
Beijing has also warned countries not to do trade deals with the U.S. that exclude China—or else. With even U.S. allies facing Mr. Trump’s tariff assault, Beijing’s threat has resonated in a way that it never previously did. U.S. diplomatic sway is ebbing.
The question going forward is whether Mr. Trump is internalizing these economic and political lessons or merely pausing to fight his trade war another day. We doubt even Mr. Trum

"-Beijing did not rely on a tariff-based traditional import substitution strategy. China implemented many promotive and restrictive measures to boost domestic investment and production, especially by attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) that facilitated tech transfer and skills upgrading. Tariffs and non-tariff barriers were among its many policy tools and by themselves don't explain China's rapid industrialization.
- China has used long-term plans that offer a degree of predictability. When Beijing says it wants to achieve a given goal, investors listen and respond accordingly.
- China was able to achieve export-oriented growth and investment in the 2000s because its economy was comparatively small. Today, it's the second-largest economy and can no longer rely on exports for sustained growth. For the United States—the world's largest economy—export-oriented growth would be even more infeasible.
- Beijing's export competitiveness isn't based on an undervalued exchange rate. Ch
