DISCLAIMER: I don't respond to rude, snarky, or otherwise immature and mean-spirited replies. I block and ignore. Adults who want to engage with me in a mature and civil manner (even if we happen to disagree on a topic) are always welcome.

  • Copy/paste them into your favorite notes program (I love UpNote - and it has both desktop and mobile versions) so you can organize and have quick access to them whenever you want. Easy peasy.

  • I agree that our conversation was perfectly civil (which I appreciate). I did delete my posts as I didn't feel like my opinion was appreciated in this area. No hard feelings whatsoever.

  • There are a lot of reasons for this. Some people never learned how to manage their emotions or how to disagree in a mature manner. A lot of people feel frustrated, angry and powerless in their everyday lives, so being nasty to others online provides a weird sort of catharsis for them. Others simply never acquired the necessary social skills to successfully function in society to any significant degree. Still others are narcissists who derive feelings of power from making others feel small. The list goes on and on.

  • Correction: All it takes is for enough apathy from the people to allow such treason to exist in the first place. You get what you give.

  • Requested (and received) all of my data last week, then promptly cancelled my account. I know I'm going to miss out on all of the communities that still decide to stay on Discord - but that says far more about THEM than it does about ME.

  • I'm a big fan of the Cypher System by Monte Cook, personally. However Call of Cthulhu (at least the mythos) is also near and dear to me. Truth be told, I haven't had a gaming group for a while now, so I'm sure there are tons of great games out there that I haven't even heard of.

As for voice chat and push-to-talk - it's not a limitation of the Matrix protocol (as far as I know), but none of the Matrix clients have this feature. Trust me. I've looked. And looked. And looked. ;)

  • Sounds interesting! What game system? Back when I still had a gaming group, I used Discord for voice chat. Matrix voice chat works well, but lacks push-to-talk functionality, though (which is an annoyance for me, personally).

  • rpg @ttrpg.network

Are any TTRPG communities migrating to Matrix?

  • I'm not really sure, either. Do some Lemmy clients curate what's in your feed based upon votes? If that's the case, I can see people trying to manipulate that...

  • No, really the best example I can give is the one I've already made about the racist neighbor. If there isn't a term for this sort of behavior, there needs to be one.

  • Both of those terms are accurate to what I'm describing. It's like racist neighbors finding everything wrong with the upkeep of your house or how much noise your kids are making just to cover up the fact that they don't want to live next to someone of color.

  • I've not heard of 'sanewashing' before. That's an interesting one. It may be 'gaslighting', but I'm not sure. A fictional example of what I'm talking about would be the guy who dates a woman to get closer to her sister. Or Homer Simpson buying a bowling ball for Marge Simpson's birthday and saying 'Well, if you don't want it, I know someone who could really, really use it....' :D

  • Ask Lemmy @lemmy.world

What is the term for using positive rhetoric to cover up negative actions or behavior?

  • This is a fantastic resource to answer that very question, and I rely on it quite a lot: Media Bias Fact Check

  • Yeah, Signal isn't specifically targeted toward gamers, so it lacks some features in that regard. However, most of the 'gamer' features it's missing are things that I never - or rarely - use, anyway. Simplicity, functionality, stability, privacy and security are my primary concerns with a Discord alternative (Discord itself failing at almost all of these spectacularly). Signal just does it better than all the others that I've looked at, imho.

  • For me at this point, it's looking like Signal is going to be my Discord replacement. I just want to be able to chat with my friends while playing games without compromising my privacy or security. I don't need an entire social network in one app, like Discord. Signal isn't perfect, but it will do what I need it to do.
