  • Yeah I've been saying we're not likely to have real midterms since Trump won. My family members brushed me off at the time, but the last few weeks they seem to have come around. It's possible they're just humoring me after all this time but i really believe more and more people are becoming fully ready to support a movement that actually fights for people. The only issue now is organizing that movement and convincing everyone to stick with it. How hard could THAT be? :)

  • Maybe that's the point? You need to be able to blow the bridge, but you don't want some asshole to be able to make some homemade explosive to blow it just because they feel like it

  • If only, huh?

  • I mean, honestly, it actually might be. It's certainly more or less how evolution did it. We're basically programmed to have genetic drifts if the population gets too low, making more likely for the reproducing population to find a new niche. So while it would be hilariously immoral, and also probably produce A LOT more of the worst minds, you produce enough genetic freaks and eventually one of em is gonna be a megagenius

  • Yeah people bring this up with Jon Stewart a lot too, but we shouldn't be trusting TV personalities. I know that elections have devolved into popularity contests so these guys have a huge head start, but it takes a very specific type of personality to get into showbiz stardom like that and I don't see them turning around to be actual good statesmen. I know Zelenskyy gets a lot of props for being a comedian turned incredible wartime leader, but those are... extenuating circumstances. Would have been very interested to see what he would have done as a peacetime leader.

  • This is a dangerous "skill" to have, though. Very easy to slip into the trap of assuming you know what they're talking about, only to have them end on a different point than you expected and then suddenly you're responding to a point they never actually made

  • Aw fuck, I love my local Dave's. They ran the Joella's out of town first though...

  • I have some beef I thought about seasoning and browning but I just had sloppy joes yesterday. There's more pizza dough in the fridge :)

  • the plastic gears must be new, they have a reputation for longevity. my mom's is as old as i am. im sure they got bought out or something

  • i really should try, i seem to recall checking the paperwork and seeing it was JUST outside the window (surprise surprise), but who knows, maybe if i can work up the energy to pester them enough.

  • In a similar boat, I've thought about that but if I ever upgraded to a stronger real centralized PC I'd have to do a bunch of Docker setup and if anything breaks my whole system would go down. As it is, with piecemeal shitass laptops each running individual services I get lots of redundancy!

  • Oh yes

  • i didn't say earth was special. do you know what it takes for those elements to come together in a way that even begins to approach life? do we ever get brand new single celled organisms that have no relation to anything that currently exists? why does every organism we've studied seem to descend from a single ancestor if it's so easy for life to arise from a barren soup?

we don't even know if we arose from that soup. maybe we're actually the aliens, delivered as a single frozen cell from some asteroid that crashed into earth. maybe! who knows! if people wanna write fanfic about the universe that's their business, but it's wildly frustrating how so many people pretend that fic has any scientific basis

  • Also, we just have literally no idea what it actually takes for life to come together. We have a sample size of one. Trying to come up with stats based on that is ridiculous, and until we actually come up with more evidence, saying either "oh there are definitely aliens" or "no there definitely aren't" just proves to me a person's willingness to make concrete statements on things they know nothing about.
