I review flashlights and other gear at https://zakreviews.com/

I don't have an affiliate link for Convoy. If you buy batteries from them, you'll probably get lights like this one due to shipping regulations. https://convoylight.com/collections/14500

Review: Convoy 14500 Shipping Light - the best value in flashlights today
The Convoy 14500 Shipping Light is included free of charge with the purchase of a 14500 battery from Convoy. It's a great value - one might even say an infinite value.

Emitter swap: Luminus SFT40 4000K high-CRI into a Skilhunt M200 v3

Emitter swap: Luminus SFT40 4000K high-CRI into a Skilhunt M200 v3
Kaidomain sold a handful of these LEDs last fall and I made the mistake of buying only two. Rumor has it they were engineering samples, and may never be produced in large quantities.
Unlike the 3000K model, efficiency is not much worse than the low-CRI SFT40. I see 1400 lumens from this flashlight, and 250m throw. The increased throw over the original 519A is most welcome. Color rendering index is 92, and R9 (deep red rendering) is 71, which are a bit lower than the 3000K. That's probably responsible for the higher efficiency.
I noticed a broken bond wire after I took this picture. I'm glad it has extras.

A Wizard Pro is a good option if you like that style. Skilhunt has a couple that cost a little less. They're on the list.

Not many changes this time around.
NU25UL becomes NU25 MCT UL
Removed Catapult Pro (price increased)
Added DW3AA
Added Pineapple Mini II

Arbitrary List of Popular Flashlights - Spring Equinox 2025 Edition

Arbitrary List of Popular Flashlights - Spring Equinox 2025 Edition
Happy Spring Equinox!
In honor of Spring Equinox, I've made an updated list of popular flashlights. It's alawys a good day for another flashlight, and I have some good candidates here.

@solrize I would definitely enjoy it more with Anduril. That's not to everyone's taste of course, but I think manufacturers would do well to base their simple UIs on the FSM codebase for its otherwise mature feature set (thermal management and such).

Review: Sofirn SC13 - a budget EDC light with great color quality and USB-C charging
The Sofirn SC13 is a very inexpensive pocket flashlight powered by an 18350 size rechargeable battery with a USB-C port on the flashlight body for charging and a magnetic tailcap for hands-free use.

@solrize There's not much heat from the Convoy. I can hold the lens against my skin with it on in the highest mode for many seconds with no discomfort. It pulls about 2A at the tail, so about 8W of electricity, which would definitely result in discomfort at contact distance with a white LED.
I do find pointing it straight into my eyes uncomfortable.

NLD: red

NLD: red
After reading the post from @solrize regarding potential benefits of far-red light on cellular respiration, I bought a Convoy S2+ with the 660nm Luminus SST-20. It's red. Very red.

The Vapcell N40 18650 battery has impressive capacity

The Vapcell N40 18650 battery has impressive capacity
I tested this N40 I bought from Convoy at 1A on the Opus and got 3901 mAh. I expected a bit less since advertised capacity is usually at very low current, so I am pleased with this result.

@solrize The TS10 is already on the list, in the enthusiast section. I think that's the right place for it because it trips USB-charging 14500s, doesn't have onboard charging, doesn't take AA, throttles hard on max, and uses Anduril. I don't have a hard set of criteria for it, but that's a lot of non-mainstream traits in one light. My SP10 Pro runs on Eneloops, and it's one of the highest output lights I've seen on 1xAA with 403 lumens and good regulation.
The SC13A is mentioned as a variant of the SC13. Currently, it's priced quite a bit higher, which diminishes one of the most compelling things about the SC13.
I'll think about something from the DL25 series. I see there's a version with deep red now, and there's some merit to that.
Added HD10, enthusiast section for now. The USB charging might get it moved to mainstream later.
Noted about the Tube.
I'm not adding a 3xAAA headlamp with a bad UI no matter how cheap it is.
I'm hoping they'll do a bit work work on the TS10 Max. I believe a buck driver was part of the original plan.

@vladmech I can endorse that plan!

@SubArcticTundra Those can be used as headlamps, handheld, and for most of them, magnetic work lights.
@flashlight

Arbitrary List of Popular Flashlights - Winter Solstice 2024 Edition
In honor of Winter Solstice, I've made an updated list of popular flashlights. Today is the day you're most likely to need a flashlight in the northern hemisphere, and I have some good candidates here.

Flashlight review: The Sofirn IF24 offers two white light sources and a colorful one, USB-C charging, and an 18650 battery.

I put it in an Acebeam Pokelit Ti and tested runtime on high. There was a considerable improvement: 190 minutes instead of 166.

@MangoPenguin @flashlight None of those offer a product that competes with this.

That seems to be a Li-ion battery with silicon added to the anode. My guess is this is not that, just incremental improvement; until recently, 14500 fell far short of the energy density of 18650. Now it's near parity, keeping in mind a smaller volume inherently means more weight in the metal housing.

There's a new highest-capacity 14500 battery, but it falls a bit short of advertised.

@evasivechimpanzee I like silicone diffusers better than plastic ones.
Adding red to the flashlight limits options. The Skilhunt EC200S offers a red secondary, but it has a very floody beam, which doesn't add as much versatility to the overall setup as something more focused.

@technomad @flashlight
Maybe the FC11C, unless you need secondary LEDs on the side, then maybe the Sofirn IF24 Pro.

Not a lot of changes this time around:
Added SC13 519A
Added L16 v2
Updated MiX-7
Removed Convoy Z1
Pending Wurkkos TS10 Max

@carter2077 @flashlight it doesn't have a sub-lumen low and the UI is a little weird. As more competing options became available, I think it's less compelling.
It's still a good flashlight, and if those traits don't bother you, may be the right light for your.

NKD: Kershaw Livewire

NKD: Kershaw Livewire
I've wanted a Livewire for a while, and I'm going to be somewhere it's legal to carry for a while so I picked one up used. OTF knives are often optimized for the preferences of the mall ninja crowd more than for practical utility, but this one seems to strike a good balance.

The SP36 is a fairly large light, larger than I think most people really need for general use and camping. The FC11C is adequate, simpler to operate, and a more convenient size. Pick up a couple spare batteries if you're concerned about runtime.

Initial impressions of the Convoy S21E as a bike light

Initial impressions of the Convoy S21E as a bike light
I've been running my Convoy S21E (B35A 4500K, 20x65 striped TIR) as a bike light for a week or so now. I find it's a big upgrade from the Wuben B2 I had been using because the beam is a more suitable shape, and it doesn't throttle if I keep my speed up.
Of course if it doesn't throttle, runtime is 73 minutes, but it's 73 minutes of 1500 lumens of glorious 97 CRI simulated daylight. I'll bring spare batteries.

I put a Nichia 719A in a C8

I put a Nichia 719A in a C8
This is an old XinTD C8. That's a retired brand from Hank Wang of Emisar fame; Convoy is the place to get a C8 these days, and they'll even pre-install the 719A (or just about any other LED you could possibly want).
It's 3000K, high-CRI and about 500m FL1 throw. I like it.

Review: Nitecore MH12 Pro - a relatively slim light with a big battery and a long range beam
The Nitecore MH12 Pro is a relatively slim light that can put a lot of light downrange for a few seconds, but that performance comes at a cost. If you're a first responder, this light may be for you, especially if you're on call out of uniform.
