  • lmao I moved from the 206 to the UK half a decade ago, and shit ain't different

  • I'm stuck in an odd position with DS3. It was the Souls game where everything clicked for me, and I was able to go back and beat DS1 afterwards. It's the From game I'm probably the least critical of, even though I can never really argue with its critics. For any flaws real or imagined, it's the Souls game that made me a lifelong fan of the genre.

That said, FromSoft seems like their clarity and execution with regard to their creative aims improve with every new release, more often than not; I'm always intrigued, even when it's not for me.

  • Thanks, I'll remind myself to report back when I dive in! Ordered the backup drive today, so it's already in motion. Like you I'm pretty laid back about my video editing work. Simple is good. I do edit a clip show for my kid every week these last two years so I'm at least slightly aware of these ideas, if only as a dilettante.

  • I could see that. I never got as far as the chalice dungeons (fast Souls fuck me up, Sekiro curved me too), but I have heard all those complaints from others.

  • Done & done!

This is a Bloodborne vid essay about how Bloodborne subverts/plays with the monomyth, and how it uses religious iconography in ways that implicitly demean humanity's connection with the divine, portraying us as mere beasts; all the more brutal for the fact that we play as a hunter of beasts. Safe to say, all the content warnings imaginable.

  • I hate pinging. My ping is 345,600,000ms.

  • AKA younger siblings, if you're into the whole brevity thing

  • This looks promising! My main use case is Jellyfin through Android TV, and it looks like AV1 has support for that. I currently have about 6 Tb of kids cartoons that are eating up most of my media server, would be great to shrink those slightly.

I think before I try this, I'll want to spring for an offline backup of the library, then begin transcoding... I need one anyway, at least now I'm excited enough to actually do it!

  • I hadn't considered a prequel. But too much explaining of how the original game began could bring down the air of mystique, somewhat. I like the setting as a striking melodrama with layers of vibes obfuscating a body of quizzical lore, which is basically From's house style at this point.

Aside from the lore and the gameplay that make Bloodborne worth revisiting, the fascination for me is how intricately the first game subverted the hero myth at almost every step (did you ever watch that OTH vid?) It left a big impression on me.

I would love for any sequel to have the same profundity of darkness. If they were right about all that subtext being intentional, then to me that means any worthwhile successor is going to be an intellectually heavy lift, more than anything else.

  • The desire for more is understandable, but my mind reels with what you would actually do with a BB sequel.

Unless you flip the script and the hunter who ascended at the end has created its own nightmare?

Beats me, what would you hope for?

  • I'm starting to run low on space with my media server, this could be a good way to forestall having to buy hard drives that don't suck!

  • He seems like not a great guy.

  • This is the lore. I haven't heard from anybody trying it, I hope OP will make the attempt and report back.

  • No, it wouldn't

  • That seems to be the academic consensus, with regard to right wing authoritarian personalities. They don't seem to have the inner reflection that makes hypocrisy uncomfortable.

  • You're fine, I know how weirdly kids can misconstrue things.

Edit: I want to add that I had no part in the down votes ITT, I'm just trying to bridge the disconnect that we seemed to have. A lot of people are understandably upset though, it's a touchy subject!

  • They're not calling those specific things abuse, but if you've lived in an emotionally abusive home they're highly recognisable moments. It sounds like you're coming at this from a slightly too literal frame of mind.

  • You should get to know him better. In his military days they called him McNasty.
