hello :)

  • The headline is a bit misleading is it not? There is no evidence of children's data being used unlawfully. (I mean there might I don't know what counts as "unlawful") This is just a fine for Reddit not to follow UKs dystopian ideas in time.

  • I really don't understand why they even did that? Guess the web devs got too bored while the current one worked too well, but that should have maybe been a sign to keep your hands from it.

You don't even need to be a designer to see how it looks worse even if you are not able to point out what exactly is wrong.

Especially do not get why they got rid of the borders for the sake of minimalism. It adds so much unnecessary mental overhead.

  • Love Cryptpad, but am I the only one for whom the loading indicator gives a bad flashback to early js framework web development where every website was 16 times the initial load time, 4 times the overall size and just more buggy. Website SPA or not have rarely a good reason to have a loading indicator for the initial load the browser already does that.

  • oof, found it. It is so weird seemingly every job listing for a software developer has the requirement of using AI nowadays. ITS NOT A SKILL, ITS MANDATORY TRAINING WHEELS. They will find worse programmers doing so, good ones can use AI if it makes sense you don't have to force it.

  • Was there another incident besides the 2026 sales promo image? I was a bit disappointing of their "response" if you can could call it that. But I don't really see this as "pushing AI", as far as I can tell this might just be an intern who was given the task to make a promo image and did not care at all.

  • Gamescope is a microcompositor from Valve that is used on the Steam Deck. Its goal is to provide an isolated compositor that is tailored towards gaming and supports many gaming-centric features ...

Whoa! That does sound like exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much, ill give it a try tomorrow!

  • Yea, i figured it wouldn't make much difference. I was talking more about a minimal setup in terms of not having features like multiple workspaces and such.

I'm aware how stupid this question is, as sway, as stated in the post, does everything as intended. I guess just asking if anybody know a "kiosk compositor" with like no features at all?! Which would be a tiny bit more fitting for my use case. Just a way to start a game directly using wayland from the terminal.

  • I have an account in the threadiverse (lemmy, piefed…) and one in microblogverse (mastodon, gotosocial…). just because they behave so differently it is not a great ux to be using only one.

in some instances it does make sense though. if your are not a heavy lemmy user and primarily use mastodon you could just @ the corresponding community in your posts. they will then show up normally here and you can still interact with it. (following communities on mastodon looks bad on mastodons end though)

or if you just want to comment or like a video on peertube you could just do that from any instance. peertube accounts also show up on lemmy like normal communities which is neat.

so in short if your are not planning on using something heavily it is probably enough to just use an account you already have. but like with everything you should just try things out and see what works best for you. :)

  • Oh yea you are right. XP was a joy to use. They have been slacking since they got that monopoly though. I am forced to use Outlook because of the company. And am always amazed how many redirects you can do for a simple authentication. Every service looks completely different and the audio in teams is so broken it cuts off for a couple of seconds and switches from mono to stereo for no apparent reason. Everything just feels like its extra work.

Switching to Linux on my private devices actually reminded me of the old windows. I just wish the UI UX of some software would be on par as well. LibreOffice and GIMP is just not fun to use.

  • Normally I look stores up using OSM and I believe I found my ISP through an comparison portal. Sure there could be advertisement involved and I definitely bought many things because of it. I just don't think we would need that in any way and that the quality of life would even go up if we banned all advertisement.

Its definitely not feasible, at least not in our life times. In my city there was a citizen initiative to ban a lot of public advertisements which did not went through as there were not enough people signing up. So apparently we are not ready for that yet. Burning all the advertising execs does sound like a sensible thing to do though :) Lets settle on that.

  • I guess on the internet or in the store.

  • It always amazes me how Microsoft is though. Stuff like Threads, Instagram, Facebook is incredibly evil but they still work?! I can at least understand why the majority of people who don't care are there. Microsofts products don't even work to begin with though. Everything they touch be it Xbox, Teams or Windows is just so bad i wonder how we even ended up here.

  • How would you know what to search for?

Because of the needs I have, when I am hungry ill search for recipes or restaurants. When my apartment needs cleaning ill search for cleaning supplies, when I am bored ill look up what movies are playing.

I actually can not come up with a single situation where advertisement would be needed or helpful in anyway. I also do not have a problem with smaller advertisement, but in my dreams they are all banned regardless. Won't be missing those.

  • im skinny and NEVER HUNGRY!!! Its actually not rare for a day to go by without me noticing that I should probably go and eat something or ill just die.
