Linux @programming.dev HayadSont @discuss.online travier.github.io systemd system extensions for Fedora image based systemsExperimental systemd system extensions (sysexts) for Fedora image based systems
While this is an especially great development for the Fedora Atomic aficionados among us, I wouldn't be surprised if we'll be hearing a lot more from sysexts as (yet another) avenue for installing software, particularly on other atomic/immutable distros. The concept itself isn't new - Flatcar has been utilizing this approach for some time (and has been a significant influence on this Fedora initiative).
The gist would be that it basically allows installing software natively without the traditional
rpm-ostree
layering method. This approach eliminates both the lengthy installation times and reboot requirements typically associated with that process. Though, it doesn't seem to completely replace the conventional method as it comes with certain limitations (as per the developer):They can not be used to:
- install another kernel
- install kernel modules
- make changes to the initrd
- make changes to /etc
- add udev rules

As any Linux chat room or forum will tell you, the most powerful tool to any Linux user is a terminal emulator. Just about every program under the sun has a command line alternative, be it CAD, note taking, or web browsing. Likewise, the digital audio workstation (DAW) is the single most important tool to anyone making music. Therefore, [unspeaker] decided the two should, at last, be combined with a terminal based DAW called Tek.

Linux @programming.dev cm0002 @lemmy.world Progress update on the Ventoy blob problem

Posting this since quite a bit has changed since I last posted about this on !technology@lemmy.world.
Here's a rough breakdown of the current status:
- shared Ventoy components: build and seem to work, needs more testing
- grub / menu - builds
- EDK II apps / UEFI chainloader and more - builds
- iPXE / BIOS chainloader - builds, with fixes for newer toolchains
- ISO9660 and UDF drivers - TODO
- Ventoy CPIO / Linux ramdisk: builds; I deemed musl xzcat unneeded, so I skipped it; needs more testing
- wimboot / Windows chainloader (?) - stalled, I lack the necessary knowledge to work on it
- geom-ventoy / FreeBSD disk mapping kernel module - is being worked on, slowly; not ready for testing
- anything else is a TODO
This should be enough to boot Linux with just what's built manually, but I haven't tried that yet.
Secure Boot is just done by using a pre-built bypass package. I'll deal with that later.
