  • Oh, but he HAS said what it means.

    • “diversity, equity and inclusion” (DEI) and “environmental, social and governance” (ESG) ideologies are garbage
    • Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said Wednesday he is only aware of two genders — male and female
    • [when] asked whether he would ask the U.S. to recognize the gender-neutral “X” marker available on Canadian passports, Poilievre pivoted to talking about the cost of living instead
    • Poilievre vows to repeal environmental assessment law to fast-track resource projects
    • Poilievre told his supporters that the Liberal government had driven investment away from Canada by pursuing an agenda of "radical net-zero environmental extremism."
    • Poilievre promised to use the notwithstanding clause to impose consecutive life sentences on multiple murderers. The Supreme Court of Canada ruled in 2022 that imposing consecutive life sentences violates an offender's Charter rights
    • Introduced bill Defined marriage as a union between ‘one man and one women to the exclusion of all others'
    • Said Indigenous Peoples needed to learn the value of hard work more than they needed compensation for residential schools
    • Said wearing a niqab at a citizenship ceremony is "not in line with Canadian values."

And his actions since day one have backed this up.

  • Every election seems to break a new advance voting record. I think that the only thing really happening is that advance voting is becoming more mainstream. When I was a kid, it was something done by people about to go on holidays or being impossibly unavailable on election day. Now, it's pretty common among the general populace, even if they can make it out on election day.

  • FIFA is such scum.

I wanted to buy tickets, so I signed up to their stupid list. I get constant invitations to buy packages of random shit that - IF I collect an entire set, at the cost of several thousand dollars - could maybe give me an opportunity to buy tickets.

    Fuckers.

  • Permanently Deleted

  • I caan't imagine where in the world you are that this could possibly be an appropriate comment for the prof to make.

It's not his place to tell you what to weat. This is no more acceptabke than if he told a female student that her skirt was too short, or for that matter, too long.

    Wear what you want.

  • Let's be clear. This is detention of "undesirables" without due process.

Just like what Trump is doing.

It's unconstitutional. It's illegal. It's inhumane, unjustifiable, sadistic, and most of all it's INCREDIBLY evil.

  • So thanks for that, but...that's not really the point.

We're not trying to hurt Trump and MAGA. We're not trying to either destroy the US or get it back to where we were a year ago.

Trump - and more to the point, his re-election - was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. Canada finally has said "enough is enough."

We're not doing this anymore. We're not tying our country's fate to ANY other nation - not the US, not England, not China or Eritrea.

Canada cannot afford to sacrifice ourselves for the sake of convenience and harmony.

Canada has one direction: Forward. We are reclaiming our sovereignty, our culture, and our place as a progressive leader in the modern world.

  • Morrowind.

Ages ago I got a new video card that came with bundled games, including the slightly-old Morrowind.

That was the intro for me to deep RPGs, and I fell hard.

A few weeks ago I decided to revisit it, and went with Open-MW and a vanilla experience.

    So awesome.

Dear Alberta: Buy American booze this weekend!

Seriously, do it. Go get your Jack (bleah), your Aviation gin, your California wines, whatever you want.

Every store with those items on the shelf has already bought the products from AGLC. They can't ship it back, and they can't recover their costs except through sales.

The AGLC is no longer buying booze from the US, which means every bottle available is money already sunk - and for small stores, it can be a lot of money.

So go to your local shop, buy what you want, and tell the owner that you know it's not on them to throw away their purchased inventory.

    Looking for replacement keycaps

So I've got a Ducky One RGB Tenkeyless keyboard, and the doubleshot caps are pretty much worn out. (the homing bars on F and J are undetectable by feel).

I'm looking for a pudding version of the same. Namely:

    • OEM profile
    • 87 key ANSII TKL layout
    • double-shot PBT
    • black-capped pudding
    • Works with Cherry switches (cherry red, FWIW)

As an added bonus, I'd like to replace the Windows key with something fun - maybe Tux the penguin or Lemmy the lemming, a motorcycle, something other than "We are the Microsoft Borg."

Best I can find so far is the enormous (145 key?!) set from Ducky, which is out of stock everywhere.

"Buy Canadian" isn't so cut and dried

In response to the US going off the rails, I'm seeing lots of push to buy Canadian products as much as possible and I love it.

But it's never that simple, is it?

Easiest case: You can buy leather bags and wallets from Adrian Klis. These are made in Canada, by a Canadian company, from Canadian materials (Buffalo hide leather).

Unfortunately, neither manufacturing or ownership are that straightforward most of the time.

    • Creemore Springs is a small brewery in Ontario, using local product and brewing locally. AND they're owned by the Molson Coors Beverage Company - a cross-border multinational.
    • Likewise, Canada Goose (winter jackets) is now owned by Bain Capital in the USA.
    • A lot of us use Melitta filters in our drip coffee makers. Melitta is a German company that manufactures in the USA. (FYI, Technivorm filters are manufactured and headquarted in The Netherlands.)
    • Coca Cola is unabashedly American, and has bac

Network time - Still worth considering an Asus RT-AC88u Pro?

So I currently have an Asus RT-AC86U that is working fine, but bogging down under load, and also is EOL.

We've got three people and about 15 devices, give or take. Our internet service is currently 300Mb cable.

The AX88U Pro is currently on a very good sale - $220CDN. I figure my options are that, the BE86U at $370, or the BE88U at $500.

Five hundred bucks is out of my justifiable price range. Spending less (a lot!) on the AX router would be nice, but the longevity (and support lifespan) of the BE86 has some appeal too.

I'm also not married to Asus, although they've been consistently excellent for me.

What do y'all think? Any educated guesses on when Asus is going to EOL the AX lineup?

Convicted Jan. 6 rioter arrested in Whistler, B.C., 4 years after U.S. Capitol was stormed

A man convicted and sentenced to nine months in jail for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol was arrested in Whistler, B.C., four years to the day after the riot.

Rather than reporting to jail in the U.S., Antony Vo headed north to seek asylum in Canada.

He told CBC News last week that he was hoping U.S. president-elect Donald Trump would pardon him.

When adding disks to a Synology SHR volume, is the data re-laid out?

Anyone an expert in Synology here?

Synology's Hybrid Raid (SHR) is a funky little system, especially since it's built on standard Linux tools.

What I'm wondering though, is how data is distributed when you change the disks in the system.

Imagine I have 2x1TB drives and 2x4TB drives in a system.

    • First it creates a 4x1TB "chunk" which is essentially RAID5. (3TB available)
    • Next it creates a 2x3TB chunk which acts like RAID1 (although internally may be calculated like a RAID5 parity.) (3TB available from this)

Now let's say I replace those two 1TB drives with 4TBs (safely, preserving data, etc.), and tell SHR to expand to use the new drives. I can see a number of scenarios from this point:

    • It mirrors the two new blocks into another 3TB chunk, giving me 9TB total. (3 from RAID5, 3 from first mirror pair, 3 from second mirror pair)
    • It expands the 3TB mirror into a second RAID5 group, giving 12TB total. (3 initial plus 9 in the second group)
    • It does the same thing *and a

    Fallout London - I just can't anymore

    This game...

I love it. I love how true it is to the (Bethesda, et al) spirit of the Fallout series. I love the humour, the clever touches, the obvious love with which it was crafted.

But holy fuck, the bugs. The bugs, the bugs, the fucking quest-breaking BUGS!!!

Also, the "FO4 too easy? We're going to make this incomprehensible" attitude.

Let's consider companions. First companion was Churchill, followed shortly by Archie then Arthur. I was travelling with Arthur when I finished Archie's questline, and then shortly after, I finished Arthur's as well. Then Arthur swapped his massive gun for melee, so I dumped him.

Unfortunately, I couldn't re-join with Archie. After every interaction, he goes into an unclickable merchant menu, and you can't get him to join you no matter what.

Back to Arthur then. I sent him to Biggs Airport, and...he's not there! FUCK!

Kiera? As soon as I didn't sign on, she went to a location I can't yet reach!

Fine, I'll solo it. Except that the Roundels are

    Question about Maori icons

    Hey all.

Canadian here. A number of years ago my family visited New Zealand, and while falling in love with the country and the culture, I also discovered the Hei Matau - the Maori fish hook.

This has haunted me ever since, and I want to carve one for myself. However, we've spent the last decade starting to understand the relationship between European settlers and the North American Indigenous people.

So what I do in my basement with carving tools is my own business, but I ask honestly if wearing a Hei Matau in public is considered respectful or appropriation. And also if the material matters in this context. (It would likely be from a tagua nut - "vegetable ivory" - although it's possible I could get some whale bone from my coastal friends.)
