    Jaws at 50

A series of articles for the 50th anniversary of Jaws.

    Personal anecdotes, analysis and more.

  • Thanks for the info.

  • Thanks!

  • :D

I guess I'll find out when I watch it.

  • I think they mean it was very bad and everyone should pretend like it doesn't exist.

  • The one on Mometu is 1hr 39mins 51secs. Prime has it, "1hr 39mins".

I tried looking up info to see which cut that was but had to stop to avoid spoilers.

    Any idea which that is?

  • Thanks.

Would it be possible to expand or link to a community's remaining tags, beyond the top 30?

  • So you're saying the Titanic took down the Twin Towers?

ZOMG The Titanic took down the Twin Towers!!!

  • I can't quite remember if I've seen this or if I'm thinking of another caving horror movie.

Either way, I found it on legit free streaming and will watch it when it's dark (oh wait, it's #Monsterdon tonight, maybe in a few nights).

  • Thanks. I know a mod can add flair but I mean hashtags like #actionmovies, #michaelmadsen etc.

Flair (e.g. Full Movie, Meta etc) will be much more limited.

    Questions about tags

    1. Can a mod add tags to someone else's post?
    2. How many tags are possible and will be shown?
I just started a movie community, with tags for actors etc already at ~30. Potentially that could increase to... hundreds? More?
How many will display? Will it always display all of them or can it be hidden /drop down, like spoiler text? Perhaps partially, e.g. the top tags are shown by default but you have to click "Expand" to see the rest.
    3. What about tags in places other than the Piefed tags entry field? E.g. in post body, comments etc. Are they... "recognized" / "effective"?
    4. Dammit, I had one more, can't remember it now.
  • 1 kilowat = 1,000 Cambodian temples

  • Is there a Trek episode or timeline where everyone wears leisure suits? If not, I want one!

  • Yeah, but zombies can be defeated with potatoes.

    Broken links

I've been noticing a few broken links like this on PieFed lately. I don't know if it's something new, or just me noticing it now.

The link breaks part way through. Checking the same post on a Lemmy instance, the link is intact.

Maybe to do with Piefed confusing underscores for formatting with underscores in multiword Wikipedia URLs?

    Links for sidebar?

I want some links to community posts in my community sidebar (e.g. to posting guidelines, resources etc) but which people can interact with even if they're on a different instance, i.e. comment, vote, etc.

At the moment, I link to the same page twice in two different ways:

    How should I do it?

(This isn't necessarily a PieFed issue, more an entire Fediverse issue. I'm still not 100% clear how to link to Fediverse content in a way that a Fediverse member can actually use.)

    Moderator / ownership levels?

Do all mods have equal power over a community? Or is there a "supermod" / "owner" / "creator" who has more power than the others?

E.g. if I make someone else a mod of a community I created, can they do everything I can? Even remove me as a mod?

    Issues with stickies

In my community !action_movies@piefed.social , I've made two posts sticky (the "Welcome" post and the "Free, legal movies" post) using my Piefed mod account, but:

    • viewing in PieFed, neither post is at the top. (They do have inverted angle brackets around the title.)
    • viewing in Lemmy, The "Free, legal movies" post is sticky (at top, with pushpin icon) but the "Welcome" post isn't.

How do I get them both displayed at the top in both PieFed and Lemmy? Or is this a bug?

B Movie Bonanza free streaming review

Looking over past posts here, I've collated a few free streaming links from:

    • free licensed movie streaming services like Fawesome, Plex and Tubi that do not require an account
    • licensed (or licence-claiming) channels & uploaders on user-upload platforms like YouTube and the Internet Archive
    • JustWatch & Reelgood links to check legal streaming availability (even though the results are not always reliable)

:::spoiler A few notes about the links

Location affects availability & language options

I'm in Mexico and I know about availability and language options for these streaming sites here in Mexico. I've only posted ones in English (or original language with English subtitles, when applicable).

    Hi, martial arts movie fans!

As this community will disappear on 1st July 2025 with the closure of its host instance (lemm.ee), I've created a new community.

It's for all kinds of action movies, including martial arts movies.

(If eventually there is enough momentum for a distinct martial arts movie community, that can be created, too.)

Feel free to come post and comment there about martial arts movies all you want!

How to federate a new community?

I created a new community on PieFed ( !action_movies@piefed.social ) and tried using https://lemmy-federate.com/ to get federated across other instances, but get an "instance is not registered" error.

    Apparently, there are... issues?
    https://lemmy.ca/post/45479147

So wondering about other ways to get federated.

    1. Can I do it myself, at least for the one other instance where I have an account (lemmy.ca)?
To me, at the moment it seems a bit 'chicken and egg'. I can't see it on lemmy.ca, so I can't subscribe to it from lemmy.ca. And lemmy.ca won't federate it until I subscribe to it. I must have it wrong.
    2. Promo communities: I know about those, but I don't want to use them just yet. This is a "soft launch" until I get more familiar with having a community and get some more content into it.
    3. Other ways?

    Thanks.

    Inspiration for Kickpuncher?

I think I might have found one possible source of inspiration for the Kickpuncher franchise: Future Kick (1991), starring Don "The Dragon" Wilson.

The Community wiki page on Kickpuncher says CyberTracker (a different Don Wilson movie which I haven't seen yet).

Previously, I always assumed the inspiration was Albert Pyun movies like Cyborg and Nemesis.

    What do you folks think?

How to crosspost a "non-link" post?

I'm trying out starting a new community.

    I wanted to crosspost some posts I already made elsewhere, e.g. https://piefed.social/post/984528 / https://lemmy.ca/post/46999890

    But there's no crosspost button.

    1. Is there a way to do it?
    2. And I'm curious: why is there no crosspost button for so many posts?

Comments from same communities shown divided?

    E.g. https://piefed.social/post/977961

    The post is on !Wikipedia@lemmy.world.

Comments (at time of writing) are divided into sections.

    1. One with no heading
    2. Heading "Comments in Wikipedia@lemmy.world"

Aren't all the comments on !Wikipedia@lemmy.world? Why two sections?

    EDIT

https://piefed.social/u/insomniac_lemon@lemmy.cafe explained: the recent post is a repost of a link first posted months ago. So the comment sections are:

    1. Comments on latest post
    2. Comment from the first time that link was posted

    Spoiler formatting? Code formatting?

Testing and wondering about spoiler formatting and code formatting in posting and commenting on PieFed.

All of the below was written based on trying things out and seeing what it looks like in the Preview window . But experience has shown me that the Preview window isn't always the same as the final result, e.g. the block quote function does not display in the Preview window but does work in the final result.

So please excuse me if any of points 1-6 do not jibe with the final results shown after I click the "Publish" button.

    1. Spoiler 1

Ah, so I can do a spoiler on PieFed. (I've gone back to Lemmy when I wanted to do some posts that needed spoiler protection.) Just not with a GUI button, but by inserting the relevant Markdown codes manually at the start and at the end of what you want to hide.

    China @sopuli.xyz
    klu9 @piefed.social

China’s AI industry has drawn increasing media attention as its progress generates excitement and trepidation about a global future fueled by Chinese AI. One dimension of this success is the ability of Chinese actors, such as DeepSeek, to circumvent U.S. restrictions on the export of critical technology. According to Reuters, a U.S. official claimed this week that DeepSeek had evaded export controls to gain access to American AI chips. Earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal reported that Chinese engineers transported hard drives with hundreds of gigabytes of AI training data in suitcases to Malaysia in order to bypass U.S. restrictions by using American chips outside of China. But the flipside to this story is how U.S. export controls have encouraged the flourishing of China’s domestic AI ecosystem.

How to "get posts into Piefed"?

Not sure of the right words for what I mean. I'm still new to the Fediverse and even newer to PieFed.

I'm now 99% of the time in PieFed (my instance: piefed.social ) as opposed to Lemmy. Often I'll visit a community and see zero or almost zero posts. But if I open the same community in Lemmy (my instance: lemmy.ca) there are loads of posts.

An example I just noticed: !stargate@lemmy.world

    • Piefed.social: 2 posts.
    • Lemmy.ca: 141 posts.
    1. Is there a way to get those missing posts into Piefed?
    2. All of them at once (not just one at a time)?
    3. Can an ordinary user like me do it?

    Thanks.
