I grew up in Northern Wisconsin and you are not wrong.
There are few things more American than reducing a place to rubble and then being like: "Here. We're bored with this so you can have it back now. Aren't you so thankful that we liberated you from your home, family, possessions, health, and everything you've ever known the *bad guys?"
You get a lawn and white New Balances at 30. At 40 you get nearsightedness and additional back pain.
"jubilationtcornpone is a great dev. He closes more tickets than anyone."
QA: "Yeah, Hi. Can you look at this defect ticket?"
Reading ticket details...
Me: "Let me guess. Is [whatshisname] responsible for this?"
QA: "Yeah."
Me: "Get him to fix it."
QA: "I tried. Like four times."
Me: Sigh "I'll take care of it."
QA: "Thank you!"
What kind of idiot can't see the difference between "I'm going to implement this stupid feature that no one wants because my boss says I have to" and "I'm going to murder Jews because my boss says I have to"?
Pretending to care about baby photos isn't hard. Keeping up the act when the baby isn't in remotely photogenic, now that's award winning acting.

It seems like the singular benefit is that DuckDB (or similar OLAP models) can quickly handle lots of expensive read queries on large datasets.
It's not a replacement for a traditional RDBMS. I've never used it so I don't know if it's worth the effort to maintain instead of just using a Postgres read-only instance to run analytics queries but somehow I doubt it.
My guess would be that it has a few very specific use cases where it can provide some added benefit. So, I fully expect it to be crammed forcefully into software projects where it provides no tangible benefit for the foreseeable future. Just like cough MongoDB cough.

Sure. I'm not sure how much my advice is worth but I'm happy to offer it if it will help you out in any way.
management is the same.
Always has been.
Friendly reminder that Wells Fargo is a crime syndicate masquerading as a bank. They committed mass identity theft against their own customers and got a slap on the wrist.
I was laid off last summer. I decided to try my hand at the entrepreneureal path. I've gotten really sick on working of projects that are clearly DOA but management just can't let go of them for one reason or another... Until they finally do and proceed fuck up my plans in the process.
There are tons of legitimate business problems that could be fixed with software but the big guys typically prefer to focus on speculative gambles rather than those.
I got the PoC done and I'm probably a month away from having a marketable service. I realize there's a high probability of failure but I won't succeed if I don't try.
Permanently Deleted
Probably creating my own fake ID and buying booze and cigarettes under age.
Edit: that or forging my parents signature on my (not so good) report cards. There were lots of things you could do with a pirated copy of Photoshop and an inkjet printer, back before everything was digitally verifiable.
The same group of Americans all worried about the anti-Christ found the one guy who matches the profile and decided to make him President. Twice.

Crane Looking for an Early Morning Meal
Went out for an early morning hike. We have lots of waterways near our house so sights like this are common. Watching this crane hunt for bait fish with the steam rising around it was kind of surreal.
Shop Door Sign
This sign hangs on my basement shop door. I didn't know Don personally. I think he was the first husband of the lady we bought our house from before he passed away. I've never seriously considered removing it. I don't know why exactly. I guess it feels sort of symbolic.
My shop was once his shop. Even though he's long gone, there's still at least one piece of evidence that he was here. One day it will be someone elses shop. Even though I'll be gone, there will still be evidence of my work. The labor of past generations that went into making a house "home."
Who would have thought woodworking could be so philosophical.

Getting Boat to Plane Out
I've had a little 12 ft (3.28m) aluminum boat with a 6 HP Johnson outboard for years. The motor is big enough to get from point A -> B but not big enough to push the boat up on plane if I'm the only one in it.
I try to put as much weight at the bow as I can but it's usually still not enough. Yesterday, I was going fishing for a bit and I thought, "I wonder what would happen if I put this cinder block up front?"
It worked great. I don't know why I didn't try it years ago.
Make Smallpox Great Again
Smallpox is the only infectious disease to be successfully iradicated. The last case occured in 1978. However, the US (CDC) and Russia maintain samples of the virus for research purposes, despite the WHO's recommendation that all samples of the virus be destroyed.
Given the current state of things, I wouldn't consider it completely impossible for some very stable genius to accidently -- or maybe not accidentally -- release the virus back into the wild.
Don't Want All Those Brown People Having Equal Representation
Context: Donald Trump spewing bullshit about annexing Canada and Greenland. Meanwhile, Congress has been dragging their feet for YEARS on resolving Puerto Rico's territorial status.
Citizens living in US territories do not receive equal representation in congress. For instance, PR has one "delegate" to the House (not an official voting member) and no senators. Taxation without representation.
Although, at this point I wouldn't blame PR if they changed their minds about wanting to become the 51st state.

Today I started investigating my high electric bill
Our electric bill has been running pretty high even though it hasn't been that cold and we've been supplementing with wood heat. Decided to track down the culprit and hooked up an energy usage monitor to one of our 5 sub panels. Gonna check the other 4 over the course of the next few days.

Please, for the love of God, just stop giving him attention
Edit: Just to clarify, my stance here is not "ignore everything Trump." He has done and will do quite a lot of things that warrant attention and concern. He's also a serial liar and world class bullshitter. A human testament to the phrase, "actions speak louder than words." Donald Trump's political success has always hinged on the fact that people are quick to forget that. He's already working overtime to distract from the fact that the majority of his campaign promises were just lies and the sooner he can make the people who voted for him forget all the pie in the sky shit they were promised, the better.
Christmas Tradition
cross-posted from: https://sh.itjust.works/post/29910764
We have a rather unique Christmas tradition in our family. Some people like to get those gingerbread house kits and decorate them. We like to decorate them and then turn them into a cookie catastrophe. We call them "gingerbread crime scenes" but they're really more along the lines of Shrek meets Apocalypse Now.
It's something we started doing when our oldest child was probably 10 years old so she wouldn't feel bad about accidentally wrecking her gingerbread house. It just became an annual tradition after that and we have a lot of fun doing it. They actually seem to get more creative every year.
This years episode is "Gummy Bears vs. Peanut Butter Perps" (the 'ginger bread men' are actually peanut butter cookies).

Pressure Regulator Replacement
Finally sucked it up and replaced our worn out water pressure regulator. Installed a shut off valve as well so I don't have to shut the water off at the meter every time.
The old copper with globs of solder is not mine. Whoever installed the water lines when this house was built should not been allowed near any tools, ever.
Case in point:
