Yes, the trap-doors are more closely related to tarantulas than the other spiders you mentioned, so they are much bulkier. That one looks to be male to me, so I think you’ve found one out looking for a lady.

Not a recluse. Looks like a Ummidia (trap door spider). Very cool spiders.

Battlestar Galactica is the one I just can’t do. I didn’t watch it when it aired, but I borrowed the box set from someone around the time it wrapped up. I think I watched 3 very tense episodes, looked at how many remained, and bailed. If I ever try again I’ll pretend I’m watching them being broadcast and stick to one episode a week. I’m probably a wuss, but that show left me exhausted.

I quite like Dana K. White’s system for this. When putting something away she asks “if I were looking for this item where would I look for it first?” And wherever that place is is where the item goes. Now I keep all my Sharpie markers in the silverware drawer and I can always find one.
Dana White doesn’t write specifically for the adhd crowd, but I swear she’s the first organizer that has ever made sense to me. There’s more to her system than this, obviously, but not much, and it almost never involves buying more bins.

Sweet, I guess I’m going to have to get a PC at some point. I actually played Riven for iPadOS recently and it was still fun, but the point and click is pretty tedious.
I’m not sure a remake willl ever match the magic of when I originally played in 1998, though. My laptop was so junky I played most of the game under a blanket because the screen was so dark, haha.

Ad Riven. I read all the novels, too!

It’s been a while, but I wanted to come back and thank you for this rec, because I really like the blue lizard sunscreen. I got the stick for my face and tube stuff for the rest of my body and I’m really pleased with them. These actually rub in very well and I’m not leaving white streaks on everything I touch.

The Count of Monte Cristo is what immediately came to my mind also. He is absolutely thorough in his revenge.

Priorities!

I’ve been reporting them. It seems that a lot of the posts contain affiliate links, so it’s someone trying to make money from that - not because they wrote the books that are getting posted.
Some have been banned, but they keep coming back. Some may be bots, but not all - I saw at least one come back with a hateful response when called out.

Hyperion is my favorite of the two, but I don’t think you could go wrong with either. If you are interested in audiobooks there is one for Dune that is very good.

As someone who once put some tortillas on the griddle, turned to the fridge to get cheese, and…walked right out of the room and back to my desk, I 100% agree. I sometimes feel dumb that I am literally setting 1 or 2 minute timers, but it’s better than burning stuff. I don’t always need them, but they are really helpful during times of stress when I’m especially preoccupied with other things.

I did a jigsaw puzzle of this painting a few years back. It was incredibly interesting to examine all those little brushstrokes one tiny square at a time and see how it all came together.

We can add [email protected] to that list. I tried to report an individual post, but I’m not sure if it went through. I just got a spinning wheel when I hit submit.

Maybe a relative of the Russian Leather Beetle (Osmoderma eremita), like Osmoderma eremicola? It’s likely going to be hard to narrow down without clear photos, though (disclaimer: I am not a beetle expert).

Looks like it may be a Cockchafer beetle.

I’m glad you’ve had better luck with Katchy than I did. I bought it because of a personal recommendation, but it didn’t really work long enough for me to determine if it was better than sticky traps.
Plus I’m the weirdo with a soft spot for moths, so I just generally leave them to fight it out with the spiders :). I cannot handle the fungus gnats flying up my nose, though. It doesn’t seem to matter if there is one fungus gnat or fifty - they all think there’s a party in my nostrils.

You mentioned pest control in the soil - have you tried mosquito bits? I ended up mixing some in with the soil for a Monstera and I also put a layer over the top and it does seem to make a difference. I do have to combine it with those unsightly yellow sticky traps, though. Between plants and the inverts I keep, my house is full of containers of damp dirt.
In case anyone is thinking about getting a katchy, you can read the reviews, but I give it a thumbs-down. I used it only a few times before fall and it worked okay, but when I pulled it out again in the spring I just get orange error lights and no response when I reached out to them.

I like the opt-out idea, too. It’s clear that there are differing opinions on the ethics of reposting, so maybe attracting posters over here is the more widely-compelling argument. Maybe part of the notice of reposting could include an invitation to come and post it themselves.

I don’t get fussed about it for myself because I know there is a large population on the internet that considers everything fair game and I post accordingly (not that I create so much stuff that everyone wants, haha). I learned that lesson twenty years ago when I spent ages in MS Paint creating a forum avatar for myself and soon started to see it popping up on other people’s profiles. I realized then that something might be legally* mine, but good luck enforcing that. Maybe most people also realize that and post knowing that they will be losing some control, but I don’t think that means we just give up all courtesy.
As far as sharing, I’m all for it - it is absolutely one of the best things about the internet. But to me it means sharing the link - “hey guys go read this cool thing” and then people can go and read and engage with the author on their work. Maybe you include some quotes with the link to give some context for sharing. It’s the wholesale cut+paste for the purpose of building up a different community that the author is not part of that I don’t care for.
Where I draw the line is a good question and I’m doubtless not always consistent. Memes? To me, the sharing and transforming is part of the nature of a meme - images are combined, text is updated or replaced, etc. Comics? Sharing one panel or whatever and directing to the artist’s site seems like the courteous thing to do, but if you are reposting so many of the artist’s comics that people just read your posts instead of going to the artist’s site I would consider that a problem.
Additionally, one benefit of requesting permission from the authors may be to attract some of them over here. I’d love to have more users passionate enough to write 5000 words about some obscure stamp collecting scandal on lemmy.
Anyway, that’s my 17 cents.

I can’t leave moderator position I didn’t ask for

I noticed a few weeks ago that I had been made a moderator of [email protected], which was not something I asked for. I assumed it was a mistake, so I clicked “leave the mod team”. A week later I was a mod again, so I left again. I noticed it again tonight, but when I tried to leave it didn’t do anything.
In the mod log it shows my attempts to leave, but in the photo I’ve attached it shows that I am removing someone else. I don’t think that person was ever a moderator, but there seem to be some wires crossed somewhere. Can someone help me out? Thanks.
7/28/23 - I noticed there had been a new release, so I tried again and was able to remove myself successfully this time.

Photos App is a troll (Arachnophobes beware)

Genuine suggestion made by my iOS photos app. Don’t ask why I have Frodo Baggins as an identified person.

One of my honey bunnies posing with her molt

Brachypelma auratum a few days after she molted. I usually leave the molts in with my tarantulas for a while to see what they will do with them. Stashing them in the water dish is very popular and it is always hilarious. This spider tends to ignore them, so I will pull it out soon and add to my collection (the one I usually hide when I have guests).

Favorite Sunscreen?
I’m looking for sunscreen recommendations - specifically for outdoor activities (hiking, etc), but if you’ve got everyday sunscreen recs, I’ll take those too. I generally prefer mineral sunscreens and I’m in the US, but feel free to share whatever sunscreens you like and hopefully others will benefit also.
Bonus points if it doesn’t burn your eyes when you get really sweaty.

Pokemon Go gym etiquette? (I’m new)
I just started playing Pokemon Go so I could play with my brother’s kids and I know very little.
I took over my first gym and then was wracked with guilt picturing small children crying their eyes out over their pokemon, so I started googling to see what the consensus was on player etiquette.
From what I understand, as long as a pokemon has been in a gym for 8.5 hours the owner will get the full 5o coins for the day. But I also keep seeing something about the coin reset at 12:01 and read that you shouldn’t take a gym between 11 pm and midnight and I really do not get it. Can someone enlighten me? I did see there had been changes to the game over the years so maybe the stuff I’m reading is not all up-to-date.

Moth outside my door (North Texas). If you zoom in and squint you can see the teeniest tarsal claw in the upper right.

I think this is Hyles lineata? I don’t know a lot about moths, but the poor guy could use a lint roller.

Pterinopelma sazimai is now Lasiocyano sazimai

I saw this on birdspidersCH youtube channel. It’s a little bit of a tongue-twister for me, but it means “hairy blue” so it’s definitely descriptive.

Confirmed female!

I have an A. seemanni that has molted 3 times in my care, but she never brings the molts up to the surface. Instead, she shreds them into tiny pieces and buries all the pieces deep within her burrow. With her most recent molt, she was finally ready for a rehouse and, amazingly, I was able to recover some intact spermatheca. She is one of my favorites, so I am very pleased.
