  • Ah yeah the standard low effort copypasta canned arguments.

Go learn to write more than a copy/paste and try to understand topics moving forward yo. Pretending to be an uncaring sociopath online is like Twitter / X shit. This is Lemmy, I presume you are here because you actually give a shit about these discussions.

  • Lulz. If you can't spar with me, you will get eaten up by the actual far right / mainstream Americans out there.

Be happy I'm willing to come over here and push back against your bubble. You guys obviously need it if you're upvoting shitty misinformation memes like this.

The best part of this entire discussion? Elon Musk is part of the $1/year salary club. Your entire fucking meme doesn't even apply to the most corrupt of CEOs.

Your argument sucks and you should make a new one. Sorry I'm the bearer of bad news but that's better than y'all idiots going out to the real world and having a far right goon own you in a debate.

  • The board of directors removes the obvious corruption argument.

And shareholders select the board of directors anyway, so if shareholders agree to new terms of values then CEOs can and will be fired.

I'm looking at Intel for example and how they mistreated Pat Gelsinger and fired him despite being a technical leader. And the new incoming CEO is Lip-Bu Tan, who is a non-technical finance bro who is worse. Why did the shareholders (and board of directors) prefer Lip-Bu Tan?

There is a large scale hero worship bro culture that's at the root of all the problems here, a culture that millions of shareholders have which is then passed to the Board of Directors and finally the C-suite that the Board hires.

But no. Let make shitty memes that misunderstand the power dynamics and perpetuates misinformation. That will help your argument lol.

EDIT and that doesn't even get to say, all the CEOs who take a $1/year paycheck just to prove you wrong. The problem here is hero worship cult culture. The pay and salaries are a distraction and easily avoided with various simple political / Public Relations moves.

  • Because today's hero worship culture makes the mass of shareholders believe that these CEOs have skills that cannot be replicated by cheaper labor.

But that's not quite as simple a problem. The issue is that you are up against literally millions of shareholders who have different values than you.

Go talk to a Tesla shareholder. They pretty much think Elon is a god. So no amount of salary is too much as long as they get Elon leading those companies. (But Elon also only takes a $1/year salary anyway to prove how awesome he is, so this entire discussion train is immediately derailed if you actually start trying to apply it in practice).

This entire meme just fundamentally misses the entire fucking problem and is nothing more than a distraction.

  • Exactly, except in reverse.

If you want to attract the talent of someone who has networth in the millions+++, you need to pay them more.

The form of your argument and where you are going with the discussion is very short sighted. This isn't a path to any actual winning argument. I suggest you start elsewhere.

This is the problem with shitty memes. They poison your brain and make you dumb. If you actually want to make a reasonable argument throw this topic away and start anew.

It's not you who is wrong. It's this meme. It's just a terrible starting place for discussion and is innately to your disadvantage.

  • The board of directors is doing so. And they do so because the board follows the will of the shareholders. And the shareholders ultimately decide the fate of companies.

But that won't fit in a simple meme will it?

  • Non sequitur and you know it. Hopeless blathering hoping to find some way to make this meme correct.

Just rewrite the meme correctly from the start so that it's actually a reflection of reality rather than a reflection of ignorance.

These low effort memes are just that. Low effort communication. Misinformation is bad in all regards and if shitty incorrect arguments are all that is needed to convince you of .... whatever this is.... then you're an ignorant uneducated fucked citizen. Surely you see the problem here?

  • It's not about better or worse. It's about being correct and understanding the people and societal structures at work here

If you aren't interested in knowing how and why CEOs get paid, maybe don't make dumbass memes about this subject.

Or do. I don't give a shit. But good luck having people believe you if you can't even get the basics correct. Or otherwise feel good that your online culture got infiltrated by blatant misinformation.

  • Depends on the company.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, owns 0.02% of Apple for example. This is #1 largest company in the world.

Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, owns 0.01% of Microsoft. This is the 2nd largest company in the world.

Jensen Huang is 3.5% of NVidia a serious level of ownership but a far cry from controlling the board. 3rd largest company but the biggest shareholder is Vanguard group at over 8%.

Institutional banks have the largest leeway, by far, in all of these companies. Understanding the voting structure of these companies is important if you don't want to sound like an ignorant dumbass.

Yeah, there's your Elon Musks and whatnot as exceptions. But they're really rare even in the scope of top companies of the SP500 and whatnot.

  • Great answer!!

After thinking about all this for a while, I've gone with the basic binary tree (leaning towards AVL tree as I expect my use case to be read heavy).

In my use case, multiple 'intervals' can merge together without major penalty (and should be merged together). It looks like a lot of these interval trees (including ph trees) are best when the intervals need to be kept separate.

There is a part of my algorithm where ph trees might be useful though. I'll have to give it some though.

I'm kind of shocked that a basic binary tree ended up being so usable. Its a classic for a reason, lol. I guess I saw the intervals and got confused and overcomplicated things....

  • Not: Gilgamesh is the oldest still surviving written story.

There was writing older than Gilgamesh. There were cities and culture before 2000BCE. Its just so old that nothing at all survived beyond that time period.

There's the Bronze Age Collapse, Burning of the Great Library, and many other events that destroyed history in the 1000BCE period. Those old people may have had older records than Gilgamesh, but all we have today is Gilgamesh if that makes any sense.

  • King Arthur isn't "one story" though. King Arthur is closer to 1100s-era fanart / fanfiction culture.

EVERYONE was making King Arthur stories back then. And guess what? They contradicted. That's why we have Excalibur vs Sword in the Stone (sometimes they're the same sword. Sometimes they aren't. Its a big contradiction because there's no singular author).

The Chinese Great Novel "Journey to the West" is truly one story by one author with multiple millennia of copycats. Meanwhile, King Author is basically a millennia of copycats without anyone knowing who the original was to begin with. Very different fundamentally.

  • And typical RAM speeds are 100GB/second for CPUs and 500GB/second on GPUs, meaning 512MB operations are literally on the order of 5 miliseconds for CPU and 1ms on GPU.

Below certain sizes, the 'billions of intervals' is larger than the damn Bitmask. Seriously, 8 bytes per interval (aka one pointer and 0 data) and that's 8GB for the data structure.

Instead of a billion 32-bit intervals to store (4GB of RAM at the minimum) it's obviously a better move to store 500-million byte Bitmasks. And modern GPUs can crush that in parallel with like 3 lines of CUDA anyway.

Datastructure for intervals across 64-bits or 128-bits??

I'm doing some Galois Field / Cyclic Redundancy Check research for fun and I've come across an intriguing pattern that I need a data structure for.

Across the 64-bit (or even 128-bit or larger) spaces, I've discovered an interesting pattern relating to hamming distances that I'd like a data structure to represent.

I'm going to need something on the order of ~billions of intervals each having somewhere between 1 item to ~1 billion per interval. And I'd like to quickly (O(1) or O(lg(n))) determine if other intervals intersect.

For 32-bit space I can simply make a 512MB Bitmask lol and then AND/OR the two Bitmask. Easy

But for 64-bit space I'm stuck and a bit ignorant to various data structures. I'm wondering if someone out there has a good data structure for me to use?

I've read over Interval Trees on Wikipedia. I'm also considering binary decision diagram over the 64-bits actually. Finally I'm thinking of some kind of 1-dimension octtree like datastructure (is that just a b

Efficiency test of my 2024 Prius Prime: Gasoline vs Electricity in my first week.

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/22892955

The Prius Prime is a dual fuel vehicle, able to run 100% on Electric, or 100% on gasoline, or a computerized blend in-between. This presents me a great opportunity to be able to do a direct comparison with the same car of an EV engine vs an ICE engine.

    • Toyota computer claims 3.2mi-per-kwhr.
    • Kill-a-watt (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kill_A_Watt) claims 2.2mi-per-kwhr.
    • Additional 1.5% losses should be assumed in the wires if you wish. (120V drops down to 118V during charging, meaning 2V of the energy was lost due to the resistance of my home's wires).
    • Level 1 charger at home (known to be less efficient).

Temporary rule: No new Political Topics until Nov 16th but.... Use this topic to discuss

Hey, lots of Political Topics coming up that's just turning into blame games, anger and bad vibes. I'm enacting a temporary rule: no new politic topics for one week as of now.

I recognize that there is a lot of anger around the election and it's legitimate to feel that way. But I'm willing to bet that none of the political talk in the next week constitutes a 'Best Of' post anyway.

That being said: feel free to use this topic (!!!!) as political talking points. I'm serious. People deserve to discuss their opinions and I don't want to hamper them too much.

If you have political stuff to say, say it in here. I'll promise to lightly moderate this topic, which means this topic will naturally lead to bad vibes and poor arguments.

But we need a place to discuss and vent.

Hey Dems, stop doomscrolling and go win the election

Despite all the doom scrolling, Harris has a comfortable lead in the electoral college right now.

The time for vibing is over. It's too late to change anyone's opinions (especially because national level events like debates are over). Harris will finish her Media Blitz soon (including a Fox News showing) while Trump retreats into his shell hoping no one notices how damn stupid his mouth is.

This is the time for doing. The focus should be on voter drives and other get out the vote pushes. It's mid October, and the October surprises are against Trump and in our favor.

It's not the lead we wanted but it's a lead nonetheless. Don't talk yourself out of believing this lead because of a bad poll or two.

2023 / 2024 Prius and Prius Prime recall notice

TL;DR: Prius and Prius Prime have a flaw where the rear doors may get water-leak (possibly from a car wash?) and randomly open even while driving. Toyota has issued a large scale recall as well as a stop-selling order to all dealerships.

That basically covers all 5th Gen Prius and Prius Prime vehicles. So until this door issue is fixed, no one is buying that vehicle.

How's Samsung's One UI these days?

I've preferred Pixel phones for the last few years but I've heard that Pixel 6/7 had 5G connection problems (Pixel 8 apparently has a better modem, but I think I'd rather stick to a Qualcomm design for now).

So onto looking for my next phone.

I haven't considered a Samsung smartphone in years because I hated their TouchWiz stuff. But apparently they got rid of that like 8 years ago and have had multiple versions of updates. Can anyone comment on how good "One UI" is compared to stock Android? How much bloatware does it feel like? And what kind of customizations did Samsung do to the UI exactly?

I'm also looking at Asus Zenfone 11, but I figure the "mainstream" choice today is Samsung, so I'll also have to seriously consider Samsung phones.

Smart Analog Sensor Interface for Smoke Detection With Ambient Light Cancellation Reference Design (Ti MSPM0L Reference Design)

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/13316176

This PDF talks about blue and infrared LEDs + photodiode and how to create a smoke detector out of them.

The gist is to send a signal over blue LED + infrared LED, and then measure from the photodiode to see how much the light reflects back (which will only reflect back in the presence of smoke).

This design uses the 2x free OpAmps on the MSPM0L (Cortex M0+) microcontroller, showing a mixed-signal design where one mixed-signal microcontroller can reduce the number of parts.

    ACEEE's Greener Cars

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/12746233

I haven't heard of this list before. ACEEE claims to consider the caustic effects of mining and total environmental impact of EVs, thus giving a way to consider lifetime emissions and lifetime pollution.

We all know that Tesla vehicles have over 1000lbs of batteries in them: batteries that were mined through dirty means, and hundreds of extra pounds that reduce the efficiency of the vehicle. Adding up the total environmental impacts overall are difficult, and I've always been looking for a methodology that took these issues into account.

ACEEE did come up with a 2024 list of the "greenest" cars, as well as a top-10 list of "Greener, non-EV cars". The non-EV list is for anyone who is unable to use electricity (ex: living in an apartment without access to a charger), who still wants the greenest solution for themselves.

Why a Plug-In Hybrid May Be the Right Car for You (Consumer Reports)

A pretty good overview of the benefits of PHEV, one of the fastest growing categories of cars in the USA today.

The tl;dr: Cheaper than EVs, takes gasoline for long-trips, are effectively electric for typical distances (~20mi to ~40mi depending on model).

However, I'd like to add that PHEVs are incredibly varied. Everyone can agree that a Prius Prime is efficient and environmental, but PHEVs like the Jeep Wrangler 4xe is incredibly inefficient. Furthermore, Jeep buyers have a reputation of not even charging the batteries!!

All in all, it seems like a good article so I feel like its worth sharing.

Hey everyone, as you all have noticed, I've slowed down on posting topics here.

My main problem is that my main search tool (search-lemmy.com) has seemingly disappeared, so I don't really know how to search Lemmy for good posts.

Lemmy's subscribed / all feeds leave much to be desired as well. So I don't think I've been finding as many posts deserving of a topic here from just the #1 votes or whatever.

Still, maybe we can discuss how we plan to find good posts and bring them to discussion here. Does anyone have good research methodologies they'd like to share with the peanut gallery?
