Is a static site generator suitable for my project?
Hi! I've been working with Hugo for a while and I also created a free MIT licensed theme with it!. I love the flexibility and the ease of use.
But I'll have to wok on a bit more complicated project than a simple showcase website/blog. The content to be published on it is not a lot, but it would be definitely better if I could:
- Get/Post some content with API to avoid posting multiple times the same articles on different platforms, getting modifications as well.
- Send posts digests via email / Download PDF post digests.
- Post on social medias (?)
- Parse some content from CSV files / I don't know anything about databases.
Now I know that I can do something like this with a little systemd service I might write on my own and something like Zapier + RSS feed + Mailchimp. Also I could leverage Hugo modules and the .GetRemote / transform.unmarshal
command, to get content from remote sources.
Now I'm not really a lot more than

Fidelty cards store app?
I used to use stocard to store the fidelty cards from several shops in one place, but now it's apparently closing and they want me to download another app which has 700 features I don't care about and that wants me to make an account and accept cookies..
Is there any Foss app that does simply this?

Have you checked out other types of therapies? Not all therapies are the same and not all medicines are the same!
You might just be missing what works for you! Don't get discouraged, I have been in therapy for 4 years and only after this time I understood that my therapist doesn't make it for me anymore!
I have PTSD from childhood trauma and from what I've read many therapists focus on other symptoms without actually addressing the core trauma.
Currently changing therapy with a microdosing friendly Gestalt therapist! Just the fact of standing for myself in one of the ugliest times makes me feel so proud.
Whatever you do, don't stop trying and don't stop seeking for alternative solutions. Think about how you managed to live with all this pain until now, and how strong you are for that. Most of the others cannot know how much strength is required to deal with such emotions.
Think if one day you will unlock this all, think how many beautiful things you could do with the consciousness of how it feels to actually feel bad!

No I actually prefer GNOME, but have to use KDE because I need specific features (kiosk mode), but yes I feel like Gnome is so much better integrated with its defaults apps!

When Linux phones?
(Actually usable ones)

Crypto - wall street on steroids Bitcoin - an actual alternative to the collapsing monetary economy
That doesn't take into account privacy coins like monero, which have different purposes, but most crypto is bullshit.

A good e-mail client for linux?
I have been using KDE for a while, while I like many features I am looking for suggestions to the default email client:
Kmail - completely unusable for me and the only one which could maybe be integrated with kontacts, it could not receive mails from IMAP or pop or would receive only sometimes
Geary - good but too minimal, I need at least some kind of contact list and mailing lists feature, maybe this integrates with gnome contacts? I couldn't find anything in settings

Glad to know xfce has a kiosk mode, I wonder if it's easier to set up than KDE or GNOME..
UFW definitely and maybe also selinux or apparmor to give internet access only to applications that need access!

I thought about Nix, it is indeed cool to declaratively install stuff and it would indeed be very helpful to set system settings all from one file so that you control everything there, but I don't think that's what I need, I think I'd need a more focused desktop environment maybe?
Kiosk environments could be a solution, because once the UI is limited, you can install software in any way you like and from any distro really, I think the focus is to keep it minimal under the hoods and very simple on the surface!

What's the best way to create dedicated devices with Linux?
Let's say I want to build a GPS module for my car, which is only a GPS, doesn't hold anything else. Or a recipe tablet for my kitchen which only hold a recipe app.
Is this kind of purposes common? What would be the best way to do this kind of stuff? How do I choose the hardware? How do I "lockdown" certain aspects I don't need about software?
These kind of devices could be convenient because, by only holding what's needed, they would use less resources, they would be completely distraction free and they would be suitable to be used by non tech savy user which would need to use only one or two programs without messing with the system in any way.
I know KDE ha some kind of multi app kiosk settings, GNOME also can achieve something similar tho it's more confusing.. There are some kiosk distros which only give you a browser. But I don't see anything that can be set up, customized, and locked like that.
But would that be the best way of achieving something like that? I mean to use a GPS

root (or sudo) access delay instead of password
Is there a way to require a user to wait a certain time instead of asking for a password every time he wants to execute a command as root or access the root / or another user account?

Probably an unpopular opinion but if you want absolute minimalism without ads use Violoncello text browser!

I think one of the problems is actually I'm lacking sugars and I frequently go in hypo, I do plenty of sports and don't eat anything sweet except for some fruits.
Yesterday I measured glicemy AFTER having had a snack like an hour before and it was 76, which is fine but on an empty stomach, it's supposed to be >100 after eating..
I will try again when I feel those strong symptoms like some evenings ago when I couldn't even think clearly and I was feeling like I was almost passing out.
For now it looks like when I'm really really down, I eat something sugary like juice fruit and I feel immediately better.
I think this is definitely playing a role, but got to investigate further and correlate with measurements.

Can you tell me more about your story?
Thank you
I cannot seem to get out from this depressive episode no matter what I do
After my last break up I can't seem to get out from this depression relapse..
I reduced media use drastically, like almost to zero, I am swimming 3-4 times a week, doing yoga 1-2 times a week, going to work every morning with my bike, doing only cold showers, being in the sun, being in nature, playing my guitar, being around people as much as I can, being around my little dog and my cats, eating super super healthy, not doing any drug, not drinking, not smoking, reading self help books..
I'm doing everything, everything that can possibly be done without meds probably, but my mind feels so down and so "lazy", last night I was sleeping on the ground because I had scabies and got cured, I had my bed changed and didn't want to sleep in my bed without having a shower first, but it felt too hard to have a shower..
I've been wearing the same clothes for 3 weeks because it feels so hard to change myself and to wash them.
Even tho I'm really putting effort into all this stuff, I feel like I

My god would love to see all events on pixelfeld instead of Instagram.....

Any currently working IG foss frontend?
I remember the old great times of barinsta.. Is there any app now? Or at least website.. ...That works decently?

Is it possible for a browser to work without android web view?

Notion alternatives? How suitable is to use a database instead?
I like notion a lot, especially for its databases function, it's much more powerful than stuff like excel, but being proprietary I'm scared of the buyers lock in / notion disallowing exports in the future and all the cons that come from using a proprietary software. Also managing integrations is probably harder than with an app that you own I think..
Is database in notion just a normal database like mysql? How easy/intuitive would be making the switch? Is it worth it?
We would use it for a very small organization, mostly for registering invoices, documents, lists of contacts with several informations.
I need to query results and to sort / filter database as I want, there's also the idea of trying integrating it with a website in the future maybe..
I like how practical notion is, but I don't like that it's proprietary and notion could potentially modify its terms of use whenever it wants.

Better frontends for ultimate guitar? (Guitar tabs apps)
After the last updates the apps started lagging lagging like hell, is there any frontend app? (Preferably Foss)

Having a federated music platform would be great both for people and for artists!

Suggerimenti su libri buoni di teoria musicale?
Ciao! Sto cercando un libro per iniziare a studiare della teoria musicale, con l'idea (forse) di fare il conservatorio un giorno.. Qualche suggerimento?

Downloading from Anna's archive without a browser?
I've seen there's an app on FDroid but it does not really work anymore, are there alternative ways?
(Interested for mobile/Android mostly)

How do I understand how much system resources I need for a certain project?
Let's say I have to host 25 websites.. How do I know how powerful should my VPS be? Which specs it should have, how fast the connection should be to handle X visits per day?
How do you understand which are your system requirements BEFORE deploying a project? Do you just make estimates and then scale up? Or there's some kind of tool to benchmark? how to handle this kind of stuff?

How is the user experience compared to matrix? Is it easy to gateway towards matrix or other services? Can I easily join matrix or other communities servers?
I see a lot of people are now using matrix but not so many xmpp, but yeah it hoggs resources on my server too. Also I feel like it's still pretty buggy..

A distro/set-up for containerization similar to android?
I like the concept of sandboxing, of device manager and restricted user, in certain cases it can be really useful to implement, and I'd like to try doing something like that on desktop.
I would install Android directly but desktop apps are usually superior in many ways.
At the same time I think stuff like qubes OS is too much..
Maybe leveraging flatpaks or docker can be a solution, toolboxes too?
I've also tried Nixos but I don't think it is what I'm looking for.

Yes, sorry, not a native English speaker

Didn't think about the 2 machines thing. But yeah it looks definitely easier than setting a transparent proxy.. But I guess all of this has to be on the same network, I cannot use an external server to which I connect to via wan because at that point the connections would be already need to be unproxied going out right?
But can't your setup be done on the same machine with a firewall?

Yes DNS and pihole were never thought as content filtering tools

I need to block IPs and unauthorized connections that are not http/https as well, I know about DNS filtering but it's not what I am trying to achieve.

Routing all network requests in proxy? Avoid use of the internet outside of proxy
Hi! I'm trying to achieve this configuration: essentially all the traffic in the network should pass the content filtering in the proxy, assume I have control over the clients. All not proxied traffic should be blocked by default.
I know not all network traffic can pass through proxy, but I'm not sure I understand how actually all of this work.
My UFW firewall configuration is the following:
undefined
To Action From -- ------ ---- 3128 ALLOW OUT Anywhere 53 ALLOW OUT Anywhere
53 is for DNS requests (that cannot pass through the proxy), even if I use DOH this port needs to be open for bootstrapping.
3128 is Squid proxy port.
I'm assuming the following:
client -> dns request (53) / cannot be handled by the proxy -> dns response client -> proxy (all ports that the proxy can handle) -> http/https/ftp response client -> blocked (all other ports)
But from

Didn't know about CENO, it looks super cool! Might have to dig more into TOR as well

Maybe search engines idk, something like Yucy?

Exactly! I don't see why we have to rely on the old internet infrastructure for a completely differently conceived type of distributing content!
There's stuff like ipfs, and I'm sure there are many ways to make self hosting easier..
We normalize everyone has a modem/router/access point at home: we should normalize everyone having his own server hosted, bitcoin node, ipfs node etc etc..
And your right, these services have to be super easy to deploy.. I think containerization might be helping with this.. Think about docker or Nixos.. Make a nice GUI and simplify docker even more and you get packages that can run on any distro in any OS, that even a complete noob could spin up! Maybe paired with repos that host most of the self hostable stuff.
But yeah I think the whole structure might be have to be rethought, from the way we host to the way we can connect to each other.. We got to give everyone the possibility to decide which web they want to be part of, and federation definitely allows this!

I want more federation! Federated browsers? Federated github? Federated hosting providers? Federated internet? Where are them?
Since being on Lemmy I feel like I finally found a place I can consider more similar to my home on the web.. I feel like this is the real decentralized web, not the next capitalism nightmare which is the so called "web3"..
Give me some guidance! How is the federation thing going? What are some cool projects I need to know about? I know Lemmy, Friendica, Matrix, Bookwyrm, Mastodon, but I'm sure there's more!

Do you think a Proxy would be better in this regard compared to a firewall? I was trying to watch the logs of ufw today and see if I could do something there but the incoming and outgoing connections are A LOT, and I would essentially like to whitelist both per domain and per IP.
How much maintainance would this require? I wonder how often IPs change today, but with all the NAT, dynamic DNS and CDNs there around maintaining a whitelist only with IP addresses looks like a nightmare..
Squid proxy with squidguard could be a better option than trying to work with a forewall maybe?

Implementing a form of websites white listing today, is it actually possible?
With all the CDNs and content been served from several locations for a single web page for example, would it be possible to implement a maintainable whitelist in something like a proxy? Does it makes sense? Or I would break half of the websites?

How does Android partition works?
How can it have a system partition which is read only and still make the user create and use its files? How does it differ from Linux in terms of permissions and user management? How are the users kind of "confined" in android?

We need better moderation tools for taking better control on how we use internet
After finding myself another time completely sucked by all the internet bullshit, finding a huge difficulty doing whichever task involves using a computer, I think I am finally sure to address the need of better moderation on the internet.
Not for platforms, but for people.
So many people have these kind of problem with the internet: there is too much dispersion, it is hard to use it while staying focused on a single task and it's hard not getting hooked by one of the countless activities you can find online. Weren't PC conceived to be "bycicles for the brains"? The internet was supposed to be a place where to share things to each other. It's a tool, but a tool needs to be at the service of who's using it, and so many people nowadays have no fucking idea of what they are doing. And even between tech savvy people (I include myself here too), how many of us do you think could decide to stop using all the bad side (because we know it's bad, I mean we're on Lemmy) of the internet just wi
