Is the length of a river relevant when swimming across it?
I’d start with gardening, fishing, road tripping, camping, hiking, but I think that might eventually not be stimulating enough. I’d probably pickup a hobby that would enable artistic expression. Maybe pottery, or stained glass?

Doin’ Don’s work for him…
Last time I saw one of those and the only time I can recall having one used on my own card was during a power outage at a restaurant circa 2000 on a roadtrip.
It seemed like a relic even at the time.
He doesn’t seem like the type that would give the administration what they want but it’s hard to advise someone to fight when they’re the ones that may have to endure the consequences.
Mohsen Mahdawi, Columbia Student Detained by Trump Administration, is Freed
Mohsen Mahdawi had been an organizer of pro-Palestinian protests at the university. The Trump administration had tried and failed to deport him for it.

So then based on the EOs own wording this is a nothing berder
willfully and unlawfully direct the obstruction of criminal law, including by directly and unlawfully prohibiting law enforcement officers from carrying out duties necessary for public safety and law enforcement
Is that what sanctuary cities do? I was under the impression they just refused to cooperate with federal law enforcement. I didn’t think they interfered

Why am I seeing political ads for Donald Trump in April of the year of his second inauguration?
To add context, the ads are on YouTube, I’m in North Carolina, they’ve mostly (all?) been regarding Medicare with a voiceover saying “He’s not going to cut Medicare or Medicaid” followed with him saying “None of that stuff is gonna be touched”
I can only imagine there’s some local elections or primaries that have his stink on it and some GOP candidate is trying to ‘roll down the windows’?

Arsenic is found naturally in some foods, including fish and shellfish, and in waters and soils.
Inorganic arsenic is found in industrial materials and gets into water—including water used to submerge rice paddies.
Rice is easily inundated with weeds and other crops, but it has one advantage: It grows well in water. So farmers germinate the seeds, and when the seedlings are ready, plant them in wet soil. They then flood their fields, which suppresses weeds, but allows the rice to flourish. Rice readily absorbs the water and everything in it—including arsenic, either naturally occurring or not. Most of the world’s rice is grown this way.
“What happens in rice, because of complex biogeochemical processes in the soil, when temperatures and CO2 go up, inorganic arsenic also does,” Ziska said. “And it’s this inorganic arsenic that poses the greatest health risk.”
If I’m understanding correctly, the risk is from flooding the fields with contaminated water
A farm that relies on flooding the field with rain from a rainy season should be unaffected? Or minorly affected, right?

How can a US citizen invest outside the reach of the federal government?
I fixed the bathroom door so it will actually latch and optionally lock again.
It was hitting the jamb on the bottom. The hinges seemed tight, so I just hit it with 40 grit sandpaper since it’s solid wood. Hit it with some sealant and it looks good as new.
I had to retighten the handle too. When I went to do the final test I was a little worried it the handle might not work correctly so I made sure I had my phone, my leatherman, and a bottle of water “just in case”.
I was surprised and very happy how well it came out.
Should I ask my boss for tomorrow off?
I work from home. It has many advantages, but one big disadvantage is you might not notice it’s a holiday and work anyway.
Dare I ask my boss for Tuesday off since I accidentally worked the holiday anyway?
What is this multi tool?
It’s approximately 1” x 1.5” (2cm x 3cm). It came with…: ::: spoiler Tap for spoiler a bag of macadamia nuts still in their shell. The shells were pre-cracked and the tapered point is used to slip in the crack and twisted to open the the shell the rest of the way :::
…but I don’t believe it was purpose built for that use and leaves the little hook with the bent tab unexplained and unused.

What is the argument for making poor/working class folks shoulder the burden of taxes?
I’m looking for serious answers to understand the mentality. Please avoid the snark. I know it’s low hanging and tempting but I’m pretty sure most, if not all, of use here on Lemmy “get it”.
I just can’t get out of my head how absurd it is that we, in the U.S. anyway, put so much of the tax burden on working class folks instead of those most benefiting from our economic system.
It seems to me the standard deduction should be at least the median personal income ($40k) if not the mean($60k) with progressive tax brackets adjusted to cover costs thereafter and possibly a supplemental wealth tax.
But I’m not an economist so trying to understand why I’m wildly wrong and this would be a terrible idea either from an economic perspective or from a political perspective.
