  • Layering isn't bad, but what happens is with each update, the system tries to re-layer each of those packages. If some are missing from the next deployment's rpm database or have been superceded by another package, you'll run into these kinds of issues.

In my case, for example, my next deployment was missing java-17-openjdk, because it had been superceded by other metapackages.

  • For the "none of the providers can be installed" errors, there's likely been a package name change or removal in 42. I ran into a similar issue with Bazzite. I uninstalled the offending package, then reinstalled after the update.

The last one says there's a package conflict. You'll need to remove the one you have in order to proceed.

  • EU OS

  • Ubuntu isn't a good choice, since Canonical is essentially the Microsoft of the Linux world. Suse makes sense, though. NixOS would be good, too, since you could scale your deployments.

  • Land doesn't vote. Chicago easily outnumbers the population of the rest of the state. Illinois might be red without Chicago, but that doesn't mean they're the majority just because they are spread out over the remaining area.

  • Tax cuts for the wealthy. Right here. This is taking public money and pumping it into private education that primarily only the wealthy can afford and is already paying for.

All because a bunch of wealthy assholes are butthurt they have to pay taxes for a school of which they voluntarily choose not to avail themselves.

The party of "fiscal responsibility;" the party of the "working class." What a fucking joke.

  • I don't really get the hate for US-based FOSS. Corporations? I get it, and I'm here with popcorn to watch them suffer. But few if any are profiting if you decide to use Fedora (for example), unless you take issue with Red Hat's downstream involvement. Most other projects don't benefit any corporation and are hobby projects put out there for the public good.

Avoiding Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and the like makes lots of sense, as does investing in your local economy, but FOSS is open by design, and it thrives through global participation. Seems to me like tossing the baby out with the bathwater, otherwise.

  • No, I understand just fine. You're ignoring the part where I said rights aren't actually fundamental or intrinsic. They're privileges society treats that way, and like other privileges, they can be taken away.

In any case, if you go to a well-known Nazi bar on purpose, what does that make you? People who go to 4chan on purpose aren't innocent victims, and their potential loss of privacy is justifiable considering how much harm has come just from there.

If you use your rights (i.e. social privileges) to purposely cause harm, or to support platforms or causes that are well-known to cause harm, there should be consequences.

  • let’s work toward making these institutions not rely on or be beholden to governments.

I don't see how that's possible unless you use a system that's resistant to governments (or moneyed interests). And the only systems like that are effectively outside their government's power or jurisdiction. Otherwise, the right mix of ambitious or greedy people could eventually cause it to crumble.

Did you have some other kind of system or plan in mind?

Mad Routine - Never Be The Same Again (2025)

If you have heard of Veela, this song is from a new band she co-founded with My City Glory. They've been at it for a little while, and this is their latest single (not even out on streaming as of this writing). You can listen to it for free on their site, or give it purchase if you really like it!

They're incredibly talented and versatile, so if this isn't your cup of tea, check out some of their other songs.

Is this a good deal for the Legend tier?

    cross-posted from: https://reddthat.com/post/38409619

Tuta is having a birthday sale, putting their highest Legend tier at the same price as their second-highest Revolutionary tier, and I'm wondering two things:

    • Is this a good deal for 36€ per year?
    • Is this a deal that comes around every year, or is this a rare sale?

I use addy.io to manage aliases, so the extra addresses are whatever. The custom domains might be nice, since I could potentially(?) use that with Addy. I've been pretty judicious with my free 1GB of space, but having 500GB would be more than comfortable (besides being overkill).

I'm not really interested in getting into self-hosting right now, but I might in the future, so I'm also curious how y'all who self-host email feel about a deal like this. Comparable to the cost of self-hosting? Similar features?

    Thanks!

When making pizza, is there a way to prevent soggy crust?

I've been doing this for a while, but it's a problem I've never solved. Dunno if it's my crust recipe or something I need to do during construction.

    The recipe is as follows:

    • 1c water, 120°F
    • 1 packet dry active yeast (2.25tsp)
    • 1Tbsp granulated sugar
    • 2Tbsp olive oil
    • 3.5C white flour
    • 1tsp salt
    1. Mix the yeast and sugar in the warm water, wait to bloom
    2. Add everything else and mix into dough.
    3. Knead, proof
    4. Roll out, transfer to pan
    5. Second proof (optional)
    6. Preheat oven to 425°F
    7. Construct pizza with favorite toppings
    8. Bake at 425°F for 15min or until cheese is sufficiently browned

Step 7 usually has jarred marinara, meats (except pepperoni), spices, and cheese, and all the veggies (and pepperoni) go on top.

Still, the very middle part of the pizza ends up a little doughy, just where the sauce meets the crust. The outside of the pizza is just fine, but the only thing I can think is that the sauce is adding too much water. Do I need to add a layer of oil be

What's the best way to deal with rejected email aliases?

So, I use addy.io, and I'm slowly trying to de-google my life, but I ran into a service last night that rejected my email alias: Steam. So as of now, it's still stuck on Google.

I'm also using Tuta, but I'd like to avoid handing that address out to any online services if possible. What's the best option here?

    Here's some ideas I had:

    • Keep using that old Google address but filter specific senders and forward them to the alias I want to use.
    • Set up a new email on Proton or Mailbox.org and use that to forward to my chosen aliases.

Is there perhaps a better or different way to have aliases for services that reject them?

Should we have a day where we, as a community, go out of our way and thank our maintainers?

Was reading this article, and it got me thinking. There's lots of people who are happy to complain at length, but what if we made it a point to pick a particular day each year to express our collective gratitude for the work people do for FOSS?

Whether in the form of donations or kind words (maybe even joining a project), it might be something that helps keep people going on the things they love but for which they don't get a lot of appreciation.

    Curious to hear y'all's thoughts.

Edit: Someone mentioned I Love Free Software Day, which is cool that it exists. I like the idea behind it, but I'm hesitant to piggyback upon a well-known holiday, for fear of being wholly overshadowed (Valentine's Day is already stressful enough for some people).

What's the proper etiquette with multiple-day contractors?

My SO and I have some contractors coming out to install new windows throughout our home. They will be here for around two days.

SO says that when they were growing up in the Deep South, it was expected that you would provide lunch for the workers if it was a multi-day job. Is that still a thing? What's the proper etiquette in Texas?

Had to upgrade my CPU cooler. Found this comparison of the heights of the Phantom Spirit 120 SE vs Normal/EVO.

    cross-posted from: https://reddthat.com/post/32123809

My Big Shuriken 3 isn't really sufficient for my new 5700X3D, even with undervolting, so I'm upgrading to the Phantom Spirit 120 SE. I've seen elsewhere that some people claim that the SE and the Normal/EVO versions are the same height, and the 154mm height noted by Thermalright is coldplate to fin.

Well, here's what seems to me to be definitive proof that the SE is indeed shorter than its capped siblings. The 154mm seems to be coldplate to pipe tip. Note that this is not my image; I'm just sharing for anyone's future reference.

The new cooler will be going into an NR200 (non-P, non-Max), and it will be paired with the aforementioned CPU on a Gigabyte B550I Aorus Pro AX. It seems to be the same overall shape and tower offset as the Peerless Assassin, so I'm expecting it to fit similarly. Will post pictures when everything is installed and working.

The system sucks, but please, be pragmatic. Vote for Harris, hold the Dems accountable, and donate to STAR and Ranked Choice Voting initiatives in your area to avoid this dilemma in the future.

Twenty years ago, I made a choice that left the world a distorted echo of what it could be.

State constitutional rights to abortion are on the ballot in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New York, Nevada, and South Dakota.

Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Wisconsin have initiatives on the ballot to ban noncitizens from voting. It's already illegal, but the initiatives will probably be used to harass and disenfranchise minorities and activists, if they pass.

Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, D.C., Alaska, and Missouri will vote to adopt or prohibit ranked choice voting.

Alaska, California, Massachusetts, and Missouri will vote to adopt a $15-18 minimum wage.

Sanity check: Yubikeys and password shares

I've been thinking about getting a couple of Yubikeys for a partner and myself, but we share certain accounts. While I would love to have the Yubikey 5 that can store TOTP, that seems like it could be problematic for shared accounts.

Would using the cheaper Yubico Security Keys to unlock Bitwarden Premium vaults, that use a Shared Organization, be a better/more sane option than trying to sync up TOTP secrets every time a new shared account gets added? Any other critiques or suggestions?

In response to questions about why A&M discontinued the medical care, a university spokesperson said its growing student population and the resulting strain on the A.P. Beutel Health Center require officials to continuously review the services they offer and how they use the center’s resources. The spokesperson noted that the university has invested more in mental health care following a national rise in college students seeking it out.

Transgender and queer students are skeptical of that explanation and believe the university acted in response to pressure from conservative groups. They say the move shows the university is not willing to support them equally.

“It just seems that they don't take the same level of care to address concerns of the queer community as they would other communities,” Klatt said.

Students saw the move as part of a political environment that has become increasingly hostile against LGBTQ+ people in Texas. And it comes as the state’s public universiti
