Information thread for a Canadian living in the US

TL’DR Looking for links and any other information to quick learn American politics and list of things with sources that I can point republicans to when we have discussions.

So I work in a place that is marjority republican and regrettably uninformed but occasionally ask for my perspective as a Canadian. While I admittedly only started caring about US politics when trump was in office his first go. I’ll even admit that at first I got caught up in the trump fervor (wife is republican, imagine how things are going), no it didn’t last long (fervor, I continue to be married). But I digress, when I give them my more “Canadian” version of events I’d like to be able to point at some information to help them educate themselves. Many are actually willing to listen and admit that they didn’t understand the issue.

Something like, a summary of the changes he’s made, timeline comparisons of other falls into autocracy. Anything helps, but I’d like to help them were I can before I have to bug ou

  • Buy 100 acres, invite 100 people to live on it with me, build crops and resources to feed, clothe and shelter each other in a sustainable way (without separating from society and ignoring capitalism exists). We have the technology and knowledge to do this (go back to villages) and not live like the stone ages. We can have all the things if we work together instead of running away and escaping solo

  • As a father, I didn’t even know what to do or expect, we’re all messy, gross, and dumb at that age. The path I chose, was if they knew enough to ask a question, it was time for a discussion. Just pay attention, offer a safe environment for questions and be honest. Most of what they need to learn the world with teach them. Be there to fact check and maybe even learn together. Last tip… WE made biology gross and taboo, WE can make it less so for our kids.

How to handle follow up questions on posts?

    Greetings,

so was just wondering, if i had follow up questions or edits for a previous post would i just edit the original with the new info or start a new post? now by editing a previous post does it refresh in some manner to get traction and more interaction again (like a new post)? or does it have any weight to sort?

i seem to let some posts die because they become old, and im unsure of protocol.

  • Wow, that is a WALL of text, lol the Debian manual seems shorter.

However, thank you! I will read this and use it to improve my questions.

Troubles with Debian 12 and Beelink s12 pro alder lake n100

Good folks, my searchfu has failed me, ive tried different distros and no change, but want to keep debian for the htpc.

After the install, my graphics driver was not installed and i believe the wifi, not sure how to check how many didn't work. any assistance with getting this working would be appreciated.

    Beelink Mini S12 Pro Mini PC, 16GB DDR4 RAM 500GB M.2 SSD
    12th Intel Alder Lake-N100

use case is of course mini htpc for plex, docker, emulation etc.

    usb installed debian 12 KDE

    no sound except line out

Thanks for any advice in advance

  • IMHO by traveling. In my case I travelled a lot for work and was introduced to new places, people, and cultures (mostly micro cultures). Seeing how things are different from your local area gives perspective.

  • Taps on the mirror… hello me. I apologize for not having any advice about solutions, although there are lots here, but I felt like I should post and say you are definitely not alone!!! I to am here and feeling the same way and looking for better interactions.

    Hold fast.

  • Thank you for the chuckle! lol

  • Sooo, can we not create and/or finance our own? Please be gentle…but…is there not enough of us paying for proton and other privacy apps to fund a floss or non-profit version? I mean there are tech nerds all over this place, along with law nerds and political nerds…etc..(meant with love btw) that would have an instant user base.

I pledge here to sub up to $15usd/month for any lemmy person that starts an entity that provides us with what we need with ethics and morality of lemmy common.

  • My wife didn’t get the joke but I found it titillating.

  • Can you elaborate on this a little more, sounds interesting and reinforcing?!

  • I’m still reading guides but my initial thoughts on OS was Debian, but am reading one using proxmox. Anything I should be aware of with proxmox?

I will read up on cockpit, nginx and the rest. Thank you for the suggestions!

I don’t have that much memory on the beelink, specs are N-100 alder lake 16gb ddr4 500gb m.2

  • I’ve recently been reading more about manjaro issues. I’ll prob use this time to choose a new daily driver as well, endeavor looks interesting thanks.

  • Great share! Will be reading this momentarily, thank you.

  • By average I mean, lots of folks have niche needs, while mine currently are generic, so I’m wondering what’s not necessarily the best but most common.

My plex/Emby server is currently on a qnap ts563 and does not handle transcoding well. Looking to improve that with the n100 and move away from emby to try jellyfin. I keep plex because it works and I share servers with friends, but I’m curious about jellyfin.

My daily driver is not going to be part of the new setup. It’s and older frankenbuilt pc with manjaro. If anyone has interesting ideas for the nas besides holding my media please do.

I think a docker system would be best but any suggestions that encompass all this would be great. If I’m being vague it’s because I’ve always just copy pasted and read guides. I’m not as knowledgeable as I’d like to be yet.

    Mini pc arriving tomorrow

Greetings, so I final got wife permission to buy a pi zero 2 and a beeline 12s pro (n100) arriving tomorrow. I already have a nas drive for my media.

Question is what is the average setup and guides for this?

Of course I will be scouring this and other communities for info but the immediate items I want to fix are my plex/jellyfin server, setup RetroArch or equivalent gaming, then of course arr servers. But I would like to also get into reverse proxy and searxng, next cloud and pihole.

Any tips on how to make this beautiful?

OS recommendations? I currently run manjaro on my daily, but would think a kubuntu or kde fedora/debian spin might be better for these items.

Guides you can point me to? Suggestions for more or better options? There are plenty of answers in this community and I will look at what’s posted but any assistance is appreciated.

    Thank you in advance.

I’m excited to start plying with the simple things

  • Tried it just now on iPad. Tried adding one item and after 10 min couldn’t get past an “invalid value” prompt when saving ingredients. Needs clearer prompts on WHAT was invalid.

  • Please stop with justifying things that are terrible for people and the world. If these items are needed for people with disabilities, you don’t take a natural container, remove it and cover it in plastic. The solution would be to create something that is created once and does the job required indefinitely.

  • Yes please, more of this. I would really like to hear something other than what is going on in the US (and Canada). Good or bad, my only issue is I wish lemmy had some kind of translator. North American sad and mad with the world!

Any Lemmings (game) app suggestion for iOS preferably something indie or FOSS rather than Sony ?

Just got an itch to play lemmings-esque games on my tablet. Trying to convert things I do and like to foss versions.

Any interest in a Lemmy users gaming group?

What would be a good game(s) for Lemmy users to start a group and play? I get people like different things, but it should be FOSS or free and accessible to anyone on Lemmy.

In short, something fun, MULTIPLAYER , and approachable for all ages. Not AAA or fees, and needs to be casual.

Possible to form a Lemmy group and pick a few games to rotate.

Respond with creative ideas and suggestions.

If for some reason you think this is a terrible idea please express it with an explanation, so it can be remedied rather than dismissed.

  • Has anyone tried floorp? I’ve been using it and it seems good with side tabs. Any others with opinion (good or bad) about it?

  • Hell yes they need to lie! They probably say they voted for who ever the loudest person in the group did so they don’t get threatened. Us older generations shouldn’t be bullying the younger ones, we had our chance and here we are.

  • Thank you all for the discussion! I have read all the comments and enjoyed each response and will continue to do so. I came out with pretty much the same feelings as the rest of you…. In an ideal world…

Once again, thank you and good luck to everyone out there…we got this!

How would a credibility system work…

Just chilling and sharing a stream of thought..

So how would a credibility system work and be implemented. What I envision is something similar to the up votes..

You have a credibility score, it starts a 0 neutral. You post something People don’t vote on if they like, the votes are for “good faith”

Good faith is You posted according to rules and started a discussion You argued in good faith and can separate with opposing opinions You clarified a topic for someone If someone has a polar opinion to yours and is being down voted because people don’t understand the system Etc.

It is tied to the user not the post

    Good, bad, indifferent…?

    Perfect the system

IOS book reader with calibre support

Greetings, I am looking for a epub/pdf reader similar to Marvin 3, that I can connect to my calibre server. It appears my Marvin was offloaded and it is no longer available. Would prefer free of course but don’t mind paying for a good app…no subscription. Foss would be great. Any other suggestions are welcome.

so title, as in if you had 50 acres and planted trees, fixed ponds and water ways, etc. would this allow more humidity, promote snow...? like a micro climate?

Multi user dungeons (MUDs) and clients

Every few years or so I run into something that triggers nostalgia with MUDs, I used to play Achaea, and Dark and Shattered Lands using Zmud client. It was fun, but re-entry is a lot of work with scripts and maps. Any that are still active (without being fully scripted)?

here's a quick top list if anyone is curious

Come say hi, how was your day?

Just stop by and say hi? I think we are all here for our fond memories of forums, BBSes and other small communities. And I have been seeing a lot of movement on the all feeds about “the site that shall not be named” (that is so much harder to type then Reddit), or how less or more toxic lemmy is (done this myself), even a thread on how older lemmy adopters are annoyed with how redditors are “changing” lemmy. A solid point was made that, if we like slower content or a less toxic environment, then these federated services are made to help you do that. So in that light I have been taking steps to help lemmy be more of what I envision it to be. A place with oodles of information and some small places with friendly avatars…yes I said oodles. Once again I welcome you, and offer this community as “our space”.

    Soooo…

I had an ok day, did the work things, and made it home to the family. However, my wife’s car AC decided it had worked long enough and retired. It is very hot here right now

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/1560729

I just created awesome-lemmy based on the well-known awesome lists.

There is already a awesome-lemmy-instances which is specialized in Lemmy instances but no general list that's why I created one.

It's forked from awesome-scala which has a very neat python script to easily add new projects so it should be quite easy to contribute, feel free to add tools, apps and websites linked to lemmy!

    Grand Idea for Retro-Community

I'd like to make this flow a public document, as a visual aid to crowdsource putting pieces together for a community server.

the big pictures is a few projects, public and private and will hopefully allow others to follow and create their own as we go. I'd like to collaborate on what would be a solid system that a single or small group could put together and duplicate. Every aspect should be discussed, debated, and voted on. Best practices adapted and short comings pointed out. I'd like it to be open source and integrate together in some fashion. We can break into fine details over time. This is a long term hobby project, not an all in one weekend project.

I think the first items to discuss are

    1. Any Interest?
    2. How to host this Flow - currently on Github
    3. How to post the progress in segments so not a mega thread
    4. Which flow soft
