  • Oh that's adorable. I love the cell-shaded art style

  • I think it's good to vent and let your feelings out. Have you had therapy before? You've clearly had a rough upbringing so maybe talking about it with a professional will help.

  • Yesterday when I was walking home from work I noticed a butterfly sitting on the pavement. Its wings were coloured as follows: predominately orange, black edges, white spots. As I went past it slowly closed and opened these wings before idly fluttering off. What do you make of this?

  • I've just seen the Storygraph challenge - that makes it easier to keep track, thanks! However I noticed that the announcement and card link are the ones from 2024 so you're aware :)

  • Any books in the Slough House series by Mick Herron (the jerk being Jackson Lamb).

  • The Feast of the Goat by Mario Vargas Llosa (who passed away a couple of weeks ago)

  • Neat! I appreciate all the work that has gone into this (the design of the bingo card is excellent and clear).

Now to look at my TBR and work out what would fit best... I was planning to read One Hundred Years of Solitude next anyway, which I think would be suitable for several squares (Number in the Title, Author from a Different Continent, Minority Author, Now a Major Motion Picture, Late to the Party)! As it's one book per square I'll have to work out which one is most suitable :)

  • Borderlands is a funny one for that, as yes whilst they are technically single player, I think they were predominately designed with co-op in mind. However if you were able to enjoy B3 regardless then that's a good sign!

I've played some single player FPS games recently - Doom Eternal and Wolfenstein 2. I suppose these are no longer 'new'! If you come across any other good ones I'd love to know :)

  • It kinda sucks how hard it is now to share a game with a friend. That was one of the main draws of console gaming for me; how you'd have ownership of the game to do with as you wished. PC gaming switched to predominately digital downloads years back, which is fine when you consider how affordable those games eventually become during Steam sales. But first party Nintendo games seem to hold their value and the sales are never that great, so you're left with more expensive games and no longer the option to share them.

  • I think B3 was a free game on PS+ a while back so I could probably play it... But yes I've also heard mixed things, so I'm in no rush considering my existing backlog. If 4 is well reviewed I might skip straight to that :)

  • I haven't played a Borderlands game since the second one, but this looks neat! Hopefully it's good as I wouldn't mind jumping back into the series.

  • I've had Balatro on a trial of Apple Arcade for the last couple months and enjoyed it - though I feel like I hit a wall not knowing how to improve my score. That trial is due to end next week, so this PS+ announcement has come at the right time! Unfortunately it doesn't look like there's a way to transfer my save.

  • I can definitely relate to some of the points you've made here. Regarding things feeling the same day-in-day-out, I get this feeling when I fall into a rut. Like get home from work, play the same game I've been playing for a few weeks, watch the next episode of a show I've been watching, tidy up etc. When I notice this happening, I realise it's time to shake things up a bit; go for a walk, draw something, alter my schedule and try a new game. Variety is the spice of life and all that.

I think it's pretty normal to move on from old friends after a while - life kinda just gets in the way and you get out of rhythm with them as you say. Maybe you need to find a new community to involve yourself with, one that reflects your current social needs. I might get downvoted for this, but on a personal level I'm quite glad I found the furry community after I moved away from my hometown. There's a lot of hate online for the group, but at the end of the day it's filled with cool nerdy people who don't take life too seriously, and this feels especially valuable at a time when we're bombarded with depressing news of politics and war. Obviously you don't have to join this group in particular, but having any kind of community around you I think is really useful.

And like someone else has said, try to step away from social media if you use it at all. The algorithms usually steer towards negative, controversial topics that gather the most clicks. It's not a healthy thing to consume.

  • Why would you flush them? Do people not look forward to eating the cardboard tube whenever they finish a roll?

  • New shell? :3

  • Couldn't you ask them to give you gift cards for places you might visit?

  • I worked at a McDonalds for a month. I'd done bar work before that and really enjoyed it, but fast food was depressing. Although my colleagues were pretty cool, the managers were absolute assholes. They made fun of all the staff and took the piss for the fact that I had a degree but was having to work somewhere like that. I was 'sick' for my notice period (I'd found work elsewhere).

It's kinda crazy that we willingly give money to companies in advance (say for gift vouchers and pre-orders)

Gift vouchers can be nice presents, but if you think about it, you're paying for the opportunity to lock in your money forcing the recipient to shop at that particular company. And more often than not, the recipient will then spent a little more than the value of the voucher in order to use it all. If you'd given them money instead, the outcome would have been the same, but this way the company gets your cash in advance. I have to hand it to whoever came up with the idea, it's a capitalist's wet dream!

And pre-orders (I'm specifically thinking of videogames here), this did make sense once upon a time when you were buying a physical copy that may have had limited stocks. But nowadays for digital pre-orders... what's the point? You're putting your trust in the company that the game will be polished from the start. At least with something like a Kickstarter, you're helping to fund development of the game. But here what exactly do you get out of it? Maybe some additional pre-order cosmeti

A single tuna (once canned) will be eaten across the world at different times, potentially years apart

Opening up a can of tuna yesterday I was wondering 'where has the rest of this tuna ended up? How long will it be before the whole fish is eaten, and how much will be wasted'?

So this partially seems to be an issue with anything from 'files.catbox.moe' such as this post https://pawb.social/post/20002623

I'm just getting a broken jpg image. Same deal in browser and using the Voyager app, so I can only assume it's something on the Pawb side.

And just today I noticed a similar issue with anything coming from lemmy.sdf.org. This could be either posts hosted on that site, or posts by users from the site. This community for example the recent posted images aren't loading: https://pawb.social/c/funhole@lemmy.sdf.org

    Unsure if it's just me!

Edit: appears to be ok now!

Could we replace the AI generated icon and banner?

I'm not sure if people care all that much, but whenever I visit this community I can't help but notice the fairly ugly icon and banner which is clearly AI generated.

Would it be worth updating these? Heck I can make something for the community if needed

Advice for using this variety of douche

So for the longest time I used a douche with a thin, hard plastic nozzle. But recently some friends mentioned they used the pictured douche which has a much thicker but softer nozzle. It also sprays to the sides to prevent the water shooting up too high.

I have a couple of questions - how deep should I be inserting the nozzle? With my old one because it shot water straight up, the depth wasn't an issue. But with this one I'm having a bit of a problem with water trickling out my butt. It's possible I'm not pushing it quite deep enough.

And the nozzle has a slight curve. What direction should that curve be facing? Towards my stomach?

    Thanks for your help!

    No Stupid Questions @lemmy.world

Why do all languages share the same intonation for questions?

I could be wrong here, but it seems to me that a common aspect amongst all languages is the tendency to raise the pitch of your voice slightly when asking a question. Especially at the end of a question sentence.

If I'm wrong about this raised pitch being common amongst all languages, at the very least do all languages change their tone slightly to indicate that a question is being asked?

I guess there needs to be some way to indicate what is and isn't a question. Perhaps a higher pitched voice reflects uncertainty. Is this something deep rooted in humans, or just an arbitrary choice when language developed?

    Rodent themed videogames

This may be an odd topic, but recently I've noticed quite a number of mouse/rodent themed games popping up. This is always excellent news in my unbiased opinion :3

I thought I'd mention some of them here.

    --Currently available--

Small Saga - I've seen some gameplay of this online. From what I can tell, you play as a ragtag collection of rodents in turn based combat. The art style is cute, but I'm not yet sold on this one (I've got enough RPGs to play as it is!).

Of Mice and Sand - Somewhat reminiscent of SimTower or Fallout Shelter, you manage a desert crawler full of mice in order to survive against attacks and random events.

Backpack Hero - This is Resident Evil storage, the game. Your choice of what to pack and how you pack it determines your abilities in battle.

The Spirit and the Mouse - A charming 3D platformer in which the mouse protagonist has to power up a French village. Apparently it's quite short, but I love the design of the mouse and environment

Are there any magazines in the UK worth reading?

It's been ages since I've sat down and read a magazine. But there are times when I don't have the motivation to read a book and I just want a quick, well-written article to enjoy.

To give an example of the sort of content, someone shared this interesting article on Lemmy the other day about the ways in which far right tech CEOs mimic AIs being trained on their own data. It was a really fascinating idea!

I'm not too fussy about the content - science, technology, gaming, nature, opinion pieces, politics (but not too heavy).

For the longest time I used to get the National Geographic, which always had good content. But I feel a bit burnt out with those. Something along these lines on another topic would be perfect.

Can anyone recommend any particular magazines?

A few more games I've played recently

Earlier this year I posted some thoughts on the games I'd been playing. Here are the ones I've completed recently.

    Paradise Killer

As a fan of the Danganronpa series, I’d heard great things about Paradise Killer. And the ways in which this game was inspired by the former are obvious, with an eclectic mix of characters embroiled in a complex murder plot. It heavily leans into the vaporwave aesthetic and soundtrack, often crossing that border into the satirical (Hypnospace Outlaw springs to mind). Unlike Danganronpa, it’s quite open ended and allows you to draw your own conclusions about the true resolution to the case. On the whole I enjoyed my time with this game, though I didn’t feel quite as drawn in to the story or attached to the characters in the same way as other detective games.

    Inscryption

I don’t really want to say too much about this game for those who haven’t yet played it. Please go in blind if you intend to play it! But at the most basic level, it’s a card game
