  • Howdy! Hope you're enjoying it!

Can I ask, how'd you find out about the fediverse? (I'm always so curious, almost none of my IRL pals have heard of it despite more than a few working in tech.)

  • Oh fun! I'll add it to my list and hopefully check it out before too long.

  • Caught this awhile ago at my local theatre, was really impressed. Sometimes those old timey complicated relationship movies are pretty icky and while this one was a bit dated, it was a groovy time.

Was also my first Rita Hayworth (besides her "role" in the Shawshank Redemption I guess) so that was groovy.

  • Homeslice, nothing in there says anything about millions of votes, let alone ten million.

The closest you get would be

"the DNC shared with us that their own data also found that policy was, in their words, a 'net-negative' in the 2024 election.

There were many net negative issues, like say, inflation and immigration which rated higher in most polling about voter issues etc.

  • as now everyone knows democrats won’t enforce the law against them, call them out on stuff, put forth a popular alternative.

What do you actually think the Democrats are able to do right now?

  • The primaries issue is the biggest tragedy to me. But, it also makes me chuckle when folks say the Dems answer is to just run a really progressive candidate and then masses of people will come vote for them. The same masses who somehow can never be bothered to make it to the primaries...

  • the yougov polls of pro-biden/anti-harris voters have shown us that harris lost 10 million votes because of gaza.

Imagine biting propaganda so hard that in the name of Palestiniansyou actively made things even worse for them and hundreds of thousands if not millions across the world.

I'd love to see the source on this though because 10 million is a wild number. Harris had 6 million fewer votes than Biden, so somehow losing ten million votes on something that wasn't the top election issue seems like an... Interesting claim.

  • Ahhh, thank you! I didn't look particularly closely. Neat that Lemmy has that system, wonder if it always did.

  • Oh shit, I think this is the start of the longest plot in Calvin and Hobbes?

Certainly one of the plot points with the most long term effects as that box is the transmogrifier, the time travel something and the duplicator?

  • I agree! I try to keep in mind that however many ethical clothes etc I buy, all this fun is probably predicated on third world suffering but fuck me sideways, sometimes life is just good (even if I'm limping home because someone got too enthusiastic about bottom tier coed sports.)

  • This weekend looks great! Tomorrow, I'm gonna tey and recover from being dumb enough to be forty, go skiing and play soccer in the same day. Saturday, going to watch the local MLS team with a couple buddies. Sunday, going with a friend whom I don't see enough to catch the women's hockey team in their first game since the Olympics. In there, I hope to find time to throw some good friends' toddler around. And ideally, somewhere in there, get high and play Songs of Conquest to scratch that heroes of might and magic II itch until it bleeds.

  • Did you mean to screenshot the post?

Or if this is a "but you participate in society..." Comment, cool. I like spreading the word about piefed so folks know there is a system where you can note users and thus moderate your responses before expending good faith effort etc.

  • ??? Clinton, one of the most unpopular candidates in history, came within a couple hundred thousand votes.

Harris lost running on massive inflation, in the same wave that saw almost every incumbent government thrown out by historic margins and still came within only a couple of points of trump.

I'd also argue Harris was a bit doomed because of how hard we took the bait last time and screamed HITLER at every provocation. The independents and centrists who watched that and endured a bad but relatively normal presidency learned the lesson that the Left exaggerates and that their warnings are without merit. If we'd "kept our powder dry" maybe we could've convinced them the 6th was as bad as it was but, like my younger sister, we just screamed, took the bait and lost despite being right.

Call it the party who cried HITLER.

  • Who could possibly have foreseen the enlightened child being a jerk with the people that disagree with them?

It’s partly a result of their position being indefensible, of course.

  • My bad, I misunderstood your question and gave you too much credit.

Your question is "why weren't the Dems a party for which I wanted to vote."

And in reality, not all choices are ideal. When it came to the Presidential election, there were two options, vote Democrat or support trump by either voting Republican or abstaining.

Enough people chose the latter and so here we are.

  • Is it my fault what you wrote was completely unconnected to the comment?

  • You mean why they didn't filibuster the one reconciliation bill on the senate which was literally the only chance they had to stop the administration?

Because the government does a lot of stuff, like say, feeding poor people, providing healthcare to seniors etc. And when the reconciliation bill came through, trump was still broadly popular.

So, what you're asking is for the Democrats to hurt a lot of people until the Republicans simply changed the rules to remove that obstacle, which they have the power to do.

So, I guess the better question is, exactly how did you expect the Dems to stop these things? Be specific.

  • That's literally the point. They are trying to goad the Left into screaming Hitler. When we do so, we generally sound hysterical to the centre and independents whom we need.

Donald wins when we're sputtering with rage.

If you've ever been a dick to a younger sibling so they freak out and get in trouble despite technically being in the right, you'll recognise the tactic.
