  • Because it took me a few years to create my perfect Fedora workstation installation.

If one days it becomes bricked, I’d probably switch to an immitable distribution, but I’m sticking with workstation as long as it works.

Also there is no real upside to switching for me.

  • What you’re saying clearly makes sense and I hadn’t thought about the fact that the videogames market had grown so much.

Still I also think it’s important to take into account that 80$ in 1999 isn’t 80$ in 2025.

I’m clearly not rooting to get more expensive games, but I want everything to be taken into account.

Anyway, I ain’t gonna buy any Nintendo console when how little my kids have used the Switch compared with the Playstation.

  • Permanently Deleted

  • The article was really interesting and made me appreciate everything Valve has brought to the Linux ecosystem.

It’s also why, once I’ll have a Steam Deck in a few months, I’ll probably buy my games on Steam instead of GOG even if game preservation is important to me.

  • I love this game except for the fact that it seems having the biggest city is the way to win when having the best quality of lifeand the least environnemental impact would be my way to win. But I guess it’s my green side😅

These games are what’s making me look at PC gaming instead at just Playstation.

  • I’m not schocked by a game costing around 80$ as that’s already what a new game costs in my country.

I remember buying Final Fantasy 8 almost 30 years ago for above 90$ as a teenager.

I also kind of remember that NES and Super NES games were really expensive.

I’m not saying that I want the price of games to increase though and I think it’s weird that Nintendo is doing this when their games clearly aren’t the most expensive ones to create.

I know I won’t be buying a Switch 2and I think people should vote with their wallets.

  • I’m using Fedora workstation (Gnome) and the updates are done while turning off the computer.

Next time I start it, it starts without having to apply or download anything.

The only thing which could be improved is that you still have to go to the software center to download updates, but you can apply them whenever you want.

  • I ain’t so convinced to be honest, but I’m always keeping an eye on their next move.

Playstation 6 will really reveal a lot about their plans.

We might have a fully retrocompatible console with a (optional) disc drive.

We might also have a digital only console with subscriptions.

Ii it’s the later, I’ll be jumping to Linux gaming.

Some questions before probably getting a Steam Deck

    Hi everyone,

I'm a Playstation gamer and a Linux user for my administrative tasks.

Since my computers (Microsoft Surface Go 1 and upgraded MacBook Pro 2012, both running Fedora Workstation) aren't powerful enough to run some 7-8 years old games unavalaible on Playstation 5, I'll probably get a (maybe used) Steam Deck by the end of 2025. It could be another handheld, but the Steam Deck is my favorite for now as reparability and Linux compatibility are high on my list.

I'd be using the Deck to run some games, but also to work when docked to my Philips 273B through USB-C, also using a USB mouse and keyboard. I'd be keeping the Playstation 5 to run demanding games and do sim racing as I don't even think a Steam Deck 2 would be powerful enough.

Here are a few questions: -I love Gnome, but I'd be willing to give KDE a shot. If I don't like it, how difficult would it be to have Gnome while keeping the normal Steam OS? -I know that I could wipe Steam OS and get Bazzite with Gnome. Except g

Question about gaming mouse (Logitech G502 Hero)

    Hi everyone!

I bought a cheap used gaming mouse for my son (Logitech G502 Hero) as I want him to learn how to use Linux on a really old computer.

This gaming mouse has a scrolling wheel without any resistance. It works fine, but I just wanted to know if it’s a normal behavior before rating the seller.

As you can see, I’m a Linux user, but clearly not a PC gamer yet (Playstation).

Thanks in advance for the help.

Why is it so difficult to know if a game is goig to run on your system?

    Hi everyone!

I’m a Playstation gamer looking into moving to Linux gaming as the next Playstation might not be able to play physical games.

    Here are my 2 computers:

MacBook Pro 2012 (upgraded) with Fedora 41

Surface Go 1 with Fedora 41

I bought Frostpunk on Steam after checking on Proton DB that it would normally run on the MacBook as I knew the Surface Go would probably be way too weak.

According to Proton DB it’s a Gold game.

In the end, no matter what version of Proton I use, it doesn’t launch on the MacBook. I have a black screen, some icy sounds and then it crashes at best..

I then thought, let’s give it a try on the Surface Go and it launched immediately without any tinkering using Proton experimenta

    Hey everyone!

The car community on Lemmy isn’t the most active and I thought it would be nice to list the cars of its members.

    Here is my list:

Present: Seat Leon Cupra 300 St 4 drive

Past: Audi S4 B6 Avant manual, Seat Ibiza Cupra

I was really happy with the 4.2 liters V8 in my S4, but the Cupra gives me more performance, more practicality and is cheaper to run. Would have loved a manual version if you could get it with fake AWD.

I plan on keeping the Leon Cupra for another 10 years before switching to an EV Estate if they appear one day.

    What’s your list?

How to remove the surface kernel and is there a program that lets you go from one PDF to another in the same folder without using the file explorer?

    Hi everyone!

I'm struggling with two things on my Surface Go 1 with Fedora 41 on it.

    • I'm trying to get rid of the Surface Kernel I once installed. Apparently I should type sudo dnf remove kernel-surface but then the terminal tells me that there is no corresponding package. Still, when I type uname -a I can see that the kernel is 6.12.7-1.surface.fc41.x86_64 #1 SMP PREEMPT. How can I get rid of it as it makes things tricky if I want to deploy my installation on another computer?
    • I'm looking for a PDF viewer which would allow me to go from one PDF file to another without going back to the file explorer. In a way, I'd want it to work a bit like an image viewer where you only have to click on an arrow to go to the next image. Is there such a program?

    Thanks for your help!

GT Sophy, from Gran Turismo, could be the future of offline gaming

While waiting for Assetto Corsa Evo to arrive one day on playstation 5, I’ve decided to race a little bit more online in GT7.

While I enjoy it, the penalty system is a problem with players involuntarly creating accidents and not being punished for it (I’ve bern on every side). This gets on my nerves as it can ruin your race.

I decided to give another go to Sophy as I had only done a few of the races where you can compete with it and it’s so much better than online racing for me.

I can clearly understand that for good players, online racing is the way to go, but at my low level there are far too many durty drivers and Sophy is just better.

I’d love a new carreer mode in GT7 with a championship against Siphy and would gladly pay for it.

Sony wanted Gran Turismo to be a game as a service, but except some new cars and tracks, they aren’t really bringing new content.

Some DLC’s would be welcome and I would love to get a Sophy equivalent AI in every racing game now that I’ve enjoyed it

Should I get Asseto Corsa or ACC or keep playing GT7 until AC evo comes out?

    Hi everyone!

I’m a Playstation owner and I’ve been playing Gran Turismo 7 since its launch.

I mostly play offline and I really enjoy the driving but the lack of a real carreer mode with a championship, good AI and standings is getting me bored.

Hopefuly AC Evo will still be launched on Playstation 5 in 2025, but no one really knows.

As sadly, Poliphony isn’t gonna launch a career mode DLC, I’m really tempted to get another racing game in order to wait.

Asseto Corsa and Asseto Corsa Competizione are the 2 choices I’m seeing as I already have Project Cars 2.

Which one would you buy, keeping in mind that I’m mostly an offline player and that I wouldn’t want the graphics to be much worse than GT7?

Is there a way to have emails organized like a Whatsapp or Signal conversation?

    Hi everyone,

I’m a happy Thunderbird user but I miss one feature.

Is there a way to have emails organized a bit like a Whatsapp/Signal conversation?

What I mean is that I would want to have the conversations sorted by the person you’re interacting with, no matter the topic and being able to just scroll up and down a conversation.

I have a lot of back and forth between my ex, her lawyer and mine and this feature would make things way easier if it exists.

Right now my conversations are already grouped under one discussion, but I still have to go to the sent emails to check what I’ve answered in the past..

    Dariusmiles2123 @sh.itjust.works

How many games do you manage to play at the same time?

I’m a separated dad with a demanding job and a fiancé. I only have the kids when I’m not working but I want to be fully available for them.

Recently, I’ve noticed that it would be difficult for me to play more than a story/ambiance game (next one is gonna be either Dead Space Remake or Aliens Dark Descent) and forever playable game (Gran Turismo 7 since its launch).

If I played more games with the time I have, I would forget the story or the controls. I haven’t tried but I’m pretty sure of it.

The problem with such a system is that I’m almost a aralyzed when I have to chose which story/ambiance game I’m gonna play.

So what’s your system and what are your time limitations?

Help to get rid of YouTube

    Hi everyone!

I’ve almost entirely degoogled my life, except for Youtube.

Here are my center of interests and some channels I follow:

    • Basketball: NBA, Andy Hoops, Heat Check, Jonny Arnett, BasketNews
    • Cars: Throttle House, Everyday Driver, Car and Driver
    • Console Gaming: GamingBolt, IGN
    • Tech: Linus Tech Tips, Techquickie

Concerning Linux, it has been easy to find alternatives to YouTube as The Linux Experiment is on PeerTube and I can support him for 1$ a month Through Patreon.

Tech Hut is on Odysee so I could watch his videos here and support him through Buy Me A Coffee or something similar if I wanted to.

I know I could watch everything from the Linus Tech Tips on Floatplane but 5$ a month is a bit too expensive.

Do you have any suggestions about anyone producing similar content to what I’ve described above (Basketball, Console Gaming, Cars and Tech) that I could watch on a YouTube alternative?

Tired of bluetooth problems, should I get a wired mouse or a bluetooth dongle?

    Hi everyone,

I run a Surface Go 1 with Fedora Workstation on it and with the Surface Kernel installed in order to improve bluetooth.

Sadly, lately, it ain't improving anything and my Surface Go just seems to have lost its bluetooth connectivity as it only manages to connect to my Sony portable speaker.

My work iPhone and my Microsoft Modern Mobile Mouse aren't detected/can't detect my Surface Go, but I can still send files through LocalSend (I guess it's not using bluetooth).

As I'm getting tired of these problems, if I don't find a quick solution, I'm looking at getting a wired mouse or a bluetooth dongle.

Since I already have my bluetooth mouse, a dongle would be practical but I'd want to be sure that I won't run into bluetooth problems with it anymore.

I don't know if it changes everything, but my Surface Go is almost always linked to an USB-C screen from Philips that I'm using as an USB hub. So the dongle would be on it and I'd use the trackpad when I'm not in front of that s

Looking for a distribution that I could replicate from one computer to another

    Hi everyone,

I’ve been a happy user of Fedora Workstation since Fedora 36 on my Surface Go 1.

I really enjoy Gnome and everything is set up the way I want to.

Since I was really happy with my setup I just wanted to be able to replicate it easily through Clonezilla so that I could port it on any future computer I’d get.

Sadly, even with the help of really helpful and knowledgeable users on Lemmy, it hasn’t worked (https://sh.itjust.works/post/25963065).

So now I’m left wondering if there could be a distribution that I’d enjoy and which would be easy to deploy on another computer as I’d hate to have to configure everything on every computer I’d get.

I love Gnome but I wouldn’t be against trying something else if necessary.

What distribution could meet my needs?

Can't boot Clonezilla image from Surface Go 1 to Acer Apire 5737z

    Hi everyone,

I have a finely tuned Fedora 40 image that I cloned using Clonezilla (see: https://sh.itjust.works/post/25762756)

I wanted to deploy it on my old Acer Aspire 5737z but it won’t boot. It’s just displaying a — on a black screen for hours.

I’m not so knowledgeable but I guess it means I would have to reinstall the GRUB or whatever.

I’ve booted into my Fedora Live USB and tried the lsblk command people were talking about on the web (I don’t understand the terminal). Here's the result.

I think the SDA disk is the one I would like to boot from.

I think I found a way to slowly get rid of WhatsApp

    Hi everyone,

First of all, I know WhatsApp doesn’t belong to Google so I’m technically in the wrong community.

Still I think getting rid of Facebook is part of the same movement.

I’ve been using Threema (and Signal/SMS a little bit) for years with all my close contacts, but I can’t fully get rid of WhatsApp as I’m part of some groups where I can’t convince/force everyone to move to Threema.

Because I was still on WhatsApp, a lot of people outside of the necessary groups thought it was okay to contact me on WhatsApp.

I had looked into ways of blocking everyone except these essential groups, but I couldn’t find anything on the web.

Now I think I’ve found the solution to prevent people outside of these necessary WhatsApp groups to write to me on WhatsApp. I had never heard of it before yesterday, but you can download a WhatsApp Business app which lets you send automated answers when people are writing to you.

So I basically just created an automated answer telling people that I’m u

Thunderbird flatpak isn't opening attachements (solved)

    Hi everyone!

I love Thunderbird and I'm really happy with it.

It's the flatpak version and, sadly, it doesn't allow me to open attachments. When I click on the file, it brings me to a screen where it proposes to use the system handler to open the file and then nothing happens.

Apparently, this is a common issue related to flatpak and its permissions, so I tried to circumvent it by trying to open documents inside Thunderbird (as I remember Thunderbird being able to open PDFs) but it didn't work as it's only telling me that Firefox is already running.

Does anyone know a workaround as for now it forces me to save documents before being able to open them?

Can't remove program on Gnome software center on Fedora

    Hi everyone!

Today I tried to install KDE alongside Gnome to give it a try on Fedora on something else than a virtual machine.

For a reason I can't understand, the terminal couldn't finish the installation of KDE as something failed. Despite all of this, all the KDE apps were installed and Plasma is appearing as an option on the login screen under Gnome and Gnome Classic. Still I couldn't launch KDE plasma and nothing was happening after typing my login.

I took it as a sign that KDE isn't for me, especially because I'm 99% happy with Gnome.

So I removed KDE via the terminal and the remaining apps via the software center. Sadly, there is one app called "Centre de bienvenue" or "Welcome center" from KDE that I can't remove. Nothing is happening when I try removing it.
