  • Kill switches are almost entirely a misconception, as far as I understand it. What's far more dangerous with US defence products is reliance on them for spare parts, repairs and upgrades. Piss off the US in some way, your very very expensive aircraft no longer gets spare parts, plane can't fly safely, it's functionally useless.

  • In Uni I ran Gentoo as my daily driver. It was stupid, but I learned a lot.

Trying and failing to get a working desktop environment, using IRC on the command line to get help from people who knew what they were doing and could advise a dumb kid like me, following their advice and getting a working DE after a reboot was the most hackerman I ever felt. I was convinced I was real hot shit. In actuality, I'd followed the advice to tweak the kernel config to get working drivers :))

  • There's also the issue that the US needs to sell bonds at higher and higher yields just to convince them it's worth the risk.

As far as I understand it (not an economist), that might lead to a debt spiral.

  • In terms of amazing new games, Terra Invicta is eating all my free time. I'm losing over and over because it's a sprawling beast of a grand strategy game, but still fascinating to poke around and see how deep the rabbithole goes.

  • My advice would be to avoid moving to lemmy.world, if you do plan to move. Not because there's anything wrong with lemmy.world, but because there is a mildly concerning amount of centralization towards that server, and it would be better to spread out potentially popular communities a bit more.

Out of the instances you listed on the thread, literature.cafe seems like the best fit if your community does decide to move.

  • Customs union and single market aren't the same thing. Customs union means no tariffs, and a unified tariff policy on those outside the union. Nothing more, nothing less. There are active discussions about doing this.

Single market is joining the EU, with regulatory alignment and free movement, as you quite rightly say.

  • Most USs in the iron don't use dryers

  • Not only did he support the neonazi, the neonazi returned the favour by endorsing him.

  • Joining the EU right now doesn't make sense politically. Far more useful and effective to work on getting a customs union in place. Most of the benefits without most of the headaches.

They could simultaneously work on regulation alignment, and then they're off to the races.

  • is it called Jewish or Jews in this case?

Jews. A thing can be Jewish, a group of people can be Jews. Another rule of thumb you can use is adjective vs noun.

  • Permanently Deleted

  • There are plenty of anti-Israeli Jews. Don't paint us all with the same brush.

  • Man, you really have no idea what's going on here in the Balkans.

  • Please don't lump trademarks with the rest. Makers have stamped their goods with their mark since ancient times, both as advertising and to signify quality products (and not knockoffs). Swords were especially commonly marked with the smith's trademark.

It was illegal to sell bread in ancient Rome without a trademark, for example. The punishments for doing so were harsh, as they wanted to be able to track down the baker if someone sold tainted bread.

In modern days, they're useful for customers to know what company they're buying from.

  • My dad grew up in a communist country, and I know exactly what you mean.

I'm incredibly lucky that we have a kind of mutual intellectual respect, where we fact-check each other a lot and are both willing to change our minds about stuff. Consequently, I've managed to explain the differences between totalitarianism, communism, and fascism (had to explain why horseshoe theory isn't a thing).

He thought I was being hyperbolic about the US' slow descent into fascism in 2017, as I ran through the fascist identification checklist. As a victim of communism, he naturally tried to make excuses for Trump. That ended the first week of his second term, and we're having some close calls with a similar candidate here.

    Protecting ourselves from bot instances

If you look at the top ~20 servers on fedidb, they are very clearly botswarms. Either intentionally set up that way, or accidentally due to turning off protections and not deleting users.

You can tell this because they have 70,000 registered users, but only 10 of them are active.

I believe we should pre-emptively defederate with botswarms before they're turned on. If the instance owners clear out the bots on their instances (like lemmy.ninja did) then they should be immediately refederated.

I don't know about you guys, but I don't want this place to be drowned in spam as soon as they're activated.

PSA: Federation with Kbin currently broken

Just so people are aware, Kbin users will not see your comments or get your votes.

If you comment on a Kbin post, only other users on sh.itjust.works will see it. We are effectively defederated due to this bug. This affects all instances on 0.18.0, as far as I understand it.

(Beehaw.org) ANNOUNCEMENT: defederating effective immediately from lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works

    cross-posted from: https://beehaw.org/post/567170

We've been defederated. Were there that many trolls/assholes on our server? What on earth happened while I was asleep?

hey folks, we'll be quick and to the point with this one:

we have made the decision to defederate from lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works. we recognize this is hugely inconvenient for a wide variety of reasons, but we think this is a decision we need to take immediately. the remainder of the post details our thoughts and decision-making on why this is necessary.

we have been concerned with how sustainable the explosion of new users on Lemmy is--particularly with federation in mind--basically since it began. i have already related how difficult dealing with the explosion has been just constrained to this instance for us four Admins, and increasingly we're being confronted with external vectors we have to deal with that have further str

    Shredded Account

Currently shredding my 11 year account with 32k comment karma. It feels pretty good, to be honest.

I have shreddit running, and I'm refreshing my profile on RiF. I'm watching the most recent comment getting further and further in the past, and deleting manually any post I see.

As soon as that's all done, deleting the account.

    Advice on Creating a Community

Imma preface this by saying that I'm not an admin or mod here, these are just my thoughts & advice on the matter.

You've noticed that a community doesn't exist on Lemmy. I'm going to assume you've checked the community browser, and seen that that specific community doesn't exist. So, you've gone to communities, typed in the name, and are about to hit create.

Well, hold up a second. There's an INSANE amount of community spam going on in lemmy.ml, and it looks like it's starting here to a much lesser degree.

    Some questions you should ask:

    1. Are you creating this community just to create it? By that I mean, are you willing to put in the work as the moderator if it does take off?
    2. Is it a niche community of a larger subset that has a thriving community or a completely new category?
    3. Are you willing to regularly post stuff to start seeding comments & advertise it in the relevant places?

If the answer to any of these is no, get your cursor off that cre
