  • This explains a lot about some of the men I've met smelled. tbph it's mostly the ones that think that wiping / washing their own anus is gay. Gender roles have ruined society.

  • one more report and I'm locking this whole mf thread

I'm not reading my way through 200 comments but I'm locking this so I can keep up with whatever you all report.

    My Original Comments:
::: spoiler spoiler I understand this is a controversial topic but y'all need to behave your damn selves

    The basics are:

    • This is fundamentally a discussion about hurtful language, including slurs. I don't mind them being mentioned / referenced (in fact I would argue it's important to talk about them), but I'm not going to tolerate them being directed at people. This is y'alls final warning on that. I've removed some comments already but after this I'm just going to start handing out bans.
    • I know there's alternate interfaces for Lemmy, but on the basic version I'm familiar with, under each comment there is a button on the left end of the bar of buttons with three dots and a little arrow indicating additional options. If you press it, you will find that you have the option to "block" other users. This function will make it so that you no longer have to see anything they post or interact with them. This is a fantastic feature that I highly recommend utilizing in the event that someone says something you find upsetting that does not break the rules of this comm or instance.

Please review this educational material for additional instruction if you are still having difficulty with these concepts. :::

I always joke that nature is almost as yonic as human architecture is phallic. I'm not sure what that says philosophically, but it's funny to look at.

  • This was my other contender for something to post.

  • That occurred to me actually, yeah. Same with the cat from another commenter.

  • I understand the analogy it's just a bad one. It references a second set of moral values that are largely unrelated but that people can also have strong yet varied opinions on. That muddles the meaning significantly for most people.

The point being made is that people can't appreciate the progress of someone's journey towards peace with their own physical body -> even though they have very little to do with the messy internal parts of the process -> because they find the entire concept morally objectionable.

Which isn't actually wrong; that is what's happening. People are letting their very narrow and rigid set of morals interfere with being able to see the beauty of the metamorphosis in front of them. They're too stuck on whether or not the concept itself relates to what somebody told them the bible means in Sunday School at 8 years old instead of critically evaluating... anything and everything? about those beliefs and how they relate to the well-being of the humans they actually share the world with.

I've met annoying vegans and I've met annoying "carnivores," but I've also met a lot of other people who are annoying for a lot of different reasons and it doesn't really benefit this discussion.

  • Weird.

  • Or to hide away at home so that they don't have to explain to their children that sometimes other people do stuff that isn't your business.

  • Yeah right now we're mostly either letting them freeze to death on the street or just putting them in jail or prison and letting the COs beat them to death or use restraints unsafely. I do doubt, however, that the people they hire to staff these places and the facilities they give them to work in will be all that much safer.

The problem with the deinstitutionalization movement under Reagan was that the primary motive was saving money. While community care is significantly less expensive in the long term, if its your primary purpose for its own sake they wind up getting neglected due to lack of funding on the community end.

There's also the fact that a lot of these people need long term occupational and vocational rehab to return to the community because we've destroyed their ability to live outside of 'The System' and a lot of people attribute that to some inherent moral failing as opposed to a niche and self-reinforcing form of PTSD.

What we really need to pour money into is intermediate / stepdown psych care like crisis stabilization and rehab, and long term residential care with a focus on community reintegration like group homes where they might have a central gathering area where they do targeted therapeutic activities, but they're also encouraged to go out to community events.

Which also brings in the point that there are thre major social points that I think would solve like 80% of the American mental health crisis:

    • something to fix food insecurity but I haven't decided what yet.
    • heavy, HEAVY taxes on any real estate that the owner does not personally occupy for 30-50% or more of the year.
    • reinstate the idea of the commons where there's lots of public spaces including both natural spaces like parks but also structured meeting and activity spaces (more public libraries could be a great option). And with at least a few publicly funded event organizers who plan regular festivals and volunteer events.

Actually you could combine that last with the food thing and have large public cafeterias where there's a couple cheap food options daily.

  • Maybe its the psych nurse in me who already likes watching people come out of a depression but that's what it most looks like with (most) of the people I've known, especially those that need hormones / surgery to improve their mental health. Like the ones that look bony or bloated or ashy or greasy with circles under their eyes and matted beadhead and uncontrolled acne everywhere from not wanting to look at themselves in the mirror or touch their own naked body in the shower. It's not everyone's story but watching the ones who do come out of that is one of the most satisfying things I've ever seen! How do you watch that and not be hyped by it? Like I get that not everybody is willing to wash another person's butt to get there but you can't even admire the result?

  • wait until they find out about the p-spot!

  • trans people who want to update their sex in their passport, birth certificate drivers license etc are wild to me!

...that's an exaggeration; it's a much more complex issue that often involves public safety in ways that don't affect me as a FtNB. If I go into a women's bathroom people mostly just squint at me and if I went into a men's people would probably mostly do the same. And if they did accost me in the ladies' my plan is to show them my vagina then cry and ask how many women with their breasts surgically removed and no hair do they plan to do this to?

but somewhere deep down I can't help but to think gender markers should never have been on government documents to begin with. the government doesn't need to know what genitals I had when I was born or anything about how that may or may not have to do with the life I'm living now. massive governmental overreach if you ask me (and the bathrooms wouldn't be an issue if Americans had real bathroom walls and doors where you can't access others peeing like that anyway.

  • Lol you're not even old I went to nursing school at 25 and my career still feels like I'm only starting and the only reason I'm getting this far this early is that the field I chose is so in demand. Try the values assessment, see if maybe that just didn't align with who you are.

It's possible the psychiatrist alone wasn't the best plan. If you can afford neuropsychiatric testing they may be able to give you more specific answers, but honestly even just a therapist who specializes in learning disabilities and stuff like adhd and autism could be a good fit and do some good skill building. You may even be able to find some free support groups in your area or online as well.

Your parents might be right about the video games fucking up your attention. They can, like you say, mess with your dopamine levels. There are AA style groups for video games but really for behavioral addictions I tend to prefer recommending Self management and recovery training (SMART) which also has free groups, many over video chat / online. You can Google it its pretty great.

In the meantime see if you can leverage the video game addiction for some good and pick up a few educational ones to see if you can gain some other useful skills. Maybe try duolingo to pick up a useful second language or some of the ones that build math / logic or English language skills. They also have ones for mental health skill building and adhd management that will try to help you form a routine. They won't be as engaging as the ones really designed to be a time suck but think of them less as a replacement drug and more of as a taper to move away from the video games.

Worst case scenario you could actually try an impatient style treatment program or rehab to force yourself cold turkey.

Ultimately though you will have to decide you want to be happier and know that it might take up to a year or more to really see results, which can be a hard thing to hear and even harder to actually do. Best of luck!

  • Oh no like, as opposed to university for some vague degree in art or political science or some super high level degree like engineering or medicine you go to a community college or technical school for a more blue collar "trades" job like plumbing or to be an electrician or welder, or to do a low-level Healthcare job like nursing assistant or x-ray technician, or to be like a teachers aid or to learn how to set up phone / tv / internet cable and radio towers and stuff. Something you need school for so it's a little more interesting and pays more, but it's not as much school and it's a lot more working with your hands on practical stuff than like four years of theory or whatever. And they're usually jobs in much higher demand to the extent that your local trade school may actually have government subsidized classes for the jobs your area really needs the most.

  • I tried but the UI was being bitchy and I gave up.

I'm making a hedge maze in Inzoi - Check my work?

    Design constraints:

    • The solution path is from the outside opening to the large courtyard in the middle (or the reverse depending on how you look at it)
    • no walls meet at a checkerboard / catty corner angle. All corners are solid L-shapes
    • no 4x4 empty spaces outside of the entrance and nine courtyards
    • no loops where you can return to a point without retracing your original path
    • all small courtyards have an entrance and exit and are part of the solve path to the center
    • all large courtyards (I'm going to put side goals / easter eggs in them) have only one entrance and are reachable as a branch of the solution path after the small courtyard that they are clockwise from.

If you're curious, the center is a witch / wizard tower covered and filled with plants with a ground floor that's an open arboretum kinda thing with stairs leading upward and a 2-level loft kinda thing up top with the bed / bath etc. When I used to play the sims the occupant would be a completely leveled up

Short Version - it's a list of things to do instead of doing dumb shit making life altering-ly bad decisions.

I typed this up real quick in reply to a question I saw elsewhere on Lemmy.

    Why?

    1. Your mental health just generally sucks lately
    2. You're waiting on an appointment with a psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist, or other treatment program that is days, weeks, or even months away and you need to make it there in one piece.
    3. If you get dragged to the ER for doing dumb shit making bad / harmful decisions, you want something to show the ER psychiatrist so they're less likely to admit you to the psych ward (I work in one. I try, and if you need it you need it, but they pretty much all suck).
    4. You wanna start a trend among your friend / social group of thinking about these things ahead of time instead of right before or during the dumb shit life altering-ly bad decisions.

Instead of paying for a therapist every week I'd be willing to pay like $100 a month for someone to harass me into going to social events.

Can I just pay someone with real event planning and social skills to just include me in whatever they're doing? It would be way better for my mental health than therapy.

Edit: not even just for me personally either. Like as a community thing. I pay my portion and the person planning all this uses it to rent a space and pay for catering or whatever and keeps a list of all of us and tries to get us all out of the house.
