  • You should try it! Personally, I don't find butter weird (I think it's just people don't think of it as an 'Asian' ingredient) but I was shocked by the mayo. But a couple of folks mentioned it, so I'm going to try!

And thanks for this post BTW, I'm a bachelor again for a week while my partner is away, so I'll defintely be cracking out the ramen. And now I can pretend I'm experimenting, rather than just being lazy!

  • If I'm trying to make it a real meal whatever veg / seafood / meat I might have around. But my lazy addition is a spoonful of crunchy peanut butter (and usually some extra spice) makes it feel more nutritious creamier and kinda like satay.

  • Like others are saying, we don't have the full story, but from this your partner sounds like they don't understand / take account of your needs and abilities. But you've said in another reply that they're considerate at other times.

Something to add is that stuff about sleep is highly emotional for lots of people. I'm the adhd one, but I have a much earlier body clock than my partner. If I've been up early and want to go to bed, I want to go NOW, but they like us to get ready for bed together, which just ends up with me hassling them to go to bed and I often get irrationally angry with them because I'm worried about not getting enough sleep and my next day being ruined and so on. But I make a specific effort to try and mask that because I know it's irrational, and they have their own sleep issues, that I want to be supportive of... But when you're tired and worried about sleep it's hard to stay reasonable. So, just worth keeping in mind when thinking about their reactions, that they themselves might see that they were being overly sensitive?

  • Had an amazing Chinese restaurant near my old place, really excellent food but always completely deserted. They always seemed so surprised that when we called for takeout and whenever we collected it they'd chat about how busy they'd been, and how bus loads of tourists stop by, it just happens to be empty right now... Uhuh. Surrre. I live in this street, I don't see busses of anyone. But the food was consistently excellent, so they must have actively not advertised because otherwise they'd been super popular.

  • I'm fine with doing housework, and doing chores for a two person house isn't much more work than when you're living alone, and is often easier than splitting chores and getting annoyed at the other person not doing stuff promptly.

Only you have a sense of your relationship, and what your roommate is like. It could be an efficient exchange, a risk of exploitation, or an generous opportunity. I've let people live with me rent-free, mostly because I know they're broke and I had space. Generally it's good when they did the housework, because then it feels like a good deal for us both rather than charity - but if I was solely interested in getting the house work done I'd rent out the room and pay for a regular cleaner, which makes more sense financially. But for the same reason, the real motivation could be weird / problematic, so you have to trust your gut.

  • Permanently Deleted

  • Yeah, I think there's a difference between "I hate housework and have spare cash, how about you do it all" and someone thinking they've hired a live in servant for a few grand. I've lived with friends and family rentfree before and done all the chores, because I'm genuinely appreciative and I have the time. And people have genuinely been sad about me moving out because they loved having a tidy house and home cooked meals. But it's never been an "arrangement" and they've never complained if I don't clean the bathroom to their specification or go away for the weekend and they have to go back to cooking for themselves.

  • Do you mean math classes/teaching? At school or university? Or just 'mathematics' as a concept? It's pretty hard to be less abstract, when the basic idea of maths is abstraction.

  • Many years ago when I thought about this, I realised I wouldn't be able to put much of my modern knowledge and skills to use. I decided I'd learn to make basic matches by distilling urine into phosphate, which wasn't invented until the 19th century, but I've forgotten the process. Collect lots of urine and boil it? Also, if you make white phosphate it can cause horrific toothache and they have to remove your jaw... So, I'm hoping another commentor will suggest a safer skill I can brush up to be ready for travel.

  • You're right, it's in the French countryside. It's a really awesome old building (even has a tower with a spiral stairway!) but it's also a bit of ruin. There was no heating, or proper electricity and loads of leaks and other problems when we moved in 18 months ago. It's been a lot of work, taught me many new skills and alternated between fun/stressful, but it's starting to feel quite homely. Hopefully we can repoint all the stone walls over summer (that's why we've been powerwashing) so that the winter storms stop raining through the walls into our living room...

Can you force android to use 2.4ghz WiFi?

I've got some smart home devices that need to be setup by another device on the same WiFi network, but it has to be 2.4ghz network. My modern android phone insists on connecting to the 5ghz network and so can't complete the setup.

Currently, I use an old android tablet that only connects to 2.4ghz to get round this, but it's clunky. Previously I've changed the WiFi network to produce seperate ssids for the two bands, but I'd rather not have to switch these settings around everytime I need to modify something.

What I want is a system setting in android or an app that forces my phone to turn off its wireless N capabilities and only use the 2.4ghz band. My searching and reading stackoverflow posts suggest this just isn't possible, but surely that's not true?! It seems like a simple enough option to have!

Tldr : how to force my phone to connect on 2.4hgz WiFi rather than 5ghz

Anyone willing to justify chicken and waffles?

I love Southern fried chicken, and I'm pretty fond of waffles (savoury with bacon and maple syrup, or sweet) but I cannot imagine the combination as working at all.

They're both a little dry on the outside and soft on the inside. It feels like they really don't complement or contrast with each other. I'm sure I'd eat it if I had so alternative, but I can imagine how it is a classic American paring. I'd much rather have fries, slaw, or potato salad which all seem to offer a creamy or crunchy contrast.

Am I missing something? People who like it, what's good about it? Is the secret lots of maple syrup? Are the waffles different that usual? Is it not actually that popular? I'm a decadent European, so I can't just go somewhere and try them myself.

    Alternative to discord?

I don't really like discord, but my gaming group have been using it for rpg stuff. Chat channels, video calls and easy to setup bots have all been really useful.

But I get the feeling the enshitification is going to get worse, so I was looking for somewhere else to migrate to. The video stuff isn't as important, we could switch easily to other services. But before I start a new campaign, and spend time setting up bots with routines for rolling dice and calculating tables, I'd like to do it somewhere that isn't in talks for an IPO.

I'm not really up on stuff like this, so I don't know if there's some obvious similar choices or an alternative medium that I haven't considered.

Has anyone ever heard of the "classic prophet-squeeze-monster trope"? What could it possibly describe?

I came across this cryptic phrase in a description of an old D&D adventure Tale of the Comet . In context, it seems to describe the designer solving a problem of game balance by having the powerful technology items have limited charges / uses before expiring. But I cannot parse prophet-squeeze-monster and I certianly don't recognise it as a classic trope. Any ideas?

    Better bluetooth management?

Is there any options for better bluetooth management than stock android (I'm on 14 currently, on a Motorola)? Android does a reasonable attempt at autoconnecting, showing me the last couple of devices and so on - but there's not a lot customisation or control.

I would like to be able to toggle easily whether devices autoconnect, I'd like to me able to have a list of 5 or 6 devices that I regularly connect to, rather than just the last three I've used. I'd like to be able to set priority for which device gets the audio out. Stuff like that!

Many androids ago there were apps that improved bluetooth management, but now they don't seem to exist. Or, at least all the ones I found in the app store seemed scammy af.

Any suggestions? Do I need to root? Or finally learn Tasker?

    Zigbee probe thermometer?

I've been looking for a zigbee temperature sensor that has a long (1-2m) probe. I can find general room temperature zigbee sensors, and WiFi devices with probes, but not what I'm looking for. Searching online just comes up with people saying I'd need to make make soemthing myself with esphome.

I'm not opposed to getting into esp at some point when I've got some free time, but I'd like something quick and easy I could just buy and have working easily. Anyone know of anything suitable?

Anyone still live-streaming their life like oldschool webcams?

Back in the early days of the internet, there were a bunch of webcams anyone could view - sometimes a street, sometimes the coffee machine of a lab, and, occasionally, someone's bedroom or appartment. Although they were much talked about, I'm sure it was a tiny number of people, and probably not for very long. And because of crappy bandwidth, most of these cams were more like constantly updating image, rather than actual video. Tbh, maybe it's not even a real thing, but I definitely remember it being spoken about.

Nowadays obviously things are great for people who want strangers to know what they're up to, they've got countless media to choose from. And 'watching a stranger do mundane things' was packaged up and sold as reality TV a long time ago.

But I guess my question is, are there people still live-streaming their life - without it being a sex thing (like onlyfans) or advertising / shilling front (so, ruling out most 'influencers'). Are their folks out there just running a 24h

So far I've found lots of task list / to do type apps that I can make lists and move things about in one axis. Or mind map type apps for building specific webs. But I've not come across something quick and easy to freeform engage with my brainstorming. Any suggestions?

Can we estimate how many deaths a company is responsible for?

The current news has me thinking that, while the death of any human is not something I actively relish, most people feel a certain satisfaction, relief or, at least, less sad when someone like Osama Bin Laden dies, because they were responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent people.

Which got me wondering, have studies been done estimating how many legitimate insurance cases are rejected, delayed or otherwise mishandled, and how many of those result in deaths? I guess other industries are also responsible for some pretty measurable risk factors (e.g. air pollution). It would interesting to see some rough numbers of how many deaths the CEOs who choose to continue running these companies in harmful ways account for. Obviously, they are only indirectly responsible, but the same could be said about Bin Laden, he didn't fly the planes himself, he delegated.

If "AI" doesn't attract customers why are companies hyping it so hard? Are they just dumb or is there another factor?

I've seen reports and studies that show products advertised as including / involving AI are off-putting to consumers. And this matches what almost every person I hear irl or online says. Regardless of whether they think that in the long-term AI will be useful, problematic or apocalyptic, nobody is impressed Spotify offering a "AI DJ" or "AI coffee machines".

I understand that AI tech companies might want to promote their own AI products if they think there's a market for them. And they might even try to create a market by hyping the possibilities of "AI". But rebranding your existing service or algorithms as being AI seems like super dumb move, obviously stupid for tech literate people and off-putting / scary for others. Have they just completely misjudged the world's enthusiasm for this buzzword? Or is there some other reason?

    Is Android increasingly inconsistent?

I feel like I'm encountering weird little tics and problems with my android devices, and those of family and friends. Just simple things where settings don't seem to be consistently applied, or the os switches something back repeatedly. For example, my apps are set to auto update, to use data as well as WiFi, etc, but every month or so I go into Play and see that some random app hasn't been updated in weeks.

Or my friend only gets Signal notifications when they open the app, despite giving full background data use, turning off adaptive battery, etc. My mother uses an alarm app that needs to display over the screen for a feature, but despite me setting that permission repeatedly Android keeps turning it off.

Is this just anecdotal bad luck? Or is all the work to preserve battery life, control background usage, etc led to an OS where the user can't control things reliably? It starting to feel a lot like MS Windows!

Why do my earbuds sound better paired to watch vs phone?

(I've got a pixel watch 2 and moto edge 40 neo, and some jlab earbuds.)

I usually listen to music on my phone, but recently linked my earbuds to my watch, and the same music played on Spotify sounds massively better on the same earbuds when played via the watch.

I assumed it was because I had installed the jlab app, and it was doing a bad job of meddling with the eq. But after uninstalling it there wasn't a noticeable difference. Is there some other setting I can adjust? Any thoughts on whether it's something my moto is doing wrong or something my pixel watch is doing right?

Its a substantial difference (although I'm not enough of an audiophile to describe it) enough that I'm now mostly playing music via my watch. But it's hitting the battery hard, so I'd rather go back to using my phone!

Site / service that will send a message at a specific date/time?

This is maybe a weird request, but I'm looking for a way to send myself some information at a specific time in the future. Basically, it's because I've got a few sites that are huge distractions for me at the moment, and I can't stop checking my accounts, responding to messages, etc. My willpower is so low, and I've got a lot of important work right now and it's starting to really mess up my life.

So my plan is to change the passwords to my accounts to a long random string, then save that string somewhere that I can't access for X days. I imagined a simple way would be to use a site that would send me an email on a date, and the content of that email would be my random passwords. But my web searches only seem to find pages telling me how to schedule my own emails, which isn't what I need.

    Any advice / suggestions?

ELI5 How does chatgpt do its shit?

I hear people saying things like "chatgpt is basically just a fancy predictive text". I'm certainly not in the "it's sentient!" camp, but it seems pretty obvious that a lot more is going on than just predicting the most likely next word.

Even if it's predicting word by word within a bunch of constraints & structures inferred from the question / prompt, then that's pretty interesting. Tbh, I'm more impressed by chatgpt's ability to appearing to "understand" my prompts than I am by the quality of the output. Even though it's writing is generally a mix of bland, obvious and inaccurate, it mostly does provide a plausible response to whatever I've asked / said.

Anyone feel like providing an ELI5 explanation of how it works? Or any good links to articles / videos?

how to find a good USB cable?

I feel like some usb cables are great, allow my devices to charge fast, connect to data reliably, etc. But it seems so difficult to find the ones that are good! I've tried buying expensive ones but it seems pretty hit and miss. Sometimes some cheapass aliexpress cable seems to beat the "good brands".

Learning computer/OS for kids, that teaches command line?

My nephews & nieces aren't currently allowed much computer access because their parents worry about screen time, inappropriate content and the like. But their mother was sharing concerns with me that they won't have the basic computer skills and understanding that we learned growing up in the 80s and 90s. Having to make computers work before you got your reward of a game was such a big motivation for me as a child. We learned to program in BASIC on spectrums and Amstrads (typing code for a game out of a magazine didn't require much knowledge but taught me a lot) and about memory management by fiddling around with AUTOEXEC.BAT/CONFIG.SYS to get DOS games running, and so on.

Are there any good educational computers / distros / OSes? Searching online mostly shows simplified GUI to access educational "games". But I was wondering if there was a Raspberry PI or linux fork or something, that was geared to create a challenging but supportive environment for learning the fundamentals.
