If you've enabled the "Hide content from new users" filter, you might be ahead to turn it off for the next month or so

I guess it also depends on how many days you've configured an account to be considered "new".

Reason being, with lemm.ee shutting down at the end of this month, a lot of accounts are moving to other instances, so you'll probably be inadvertently filtering far more people than you intend.

When things are stable, it's a nice filter option to hide the whack-a-mole trolls who keep popping up, but when a major instance closes shop and/or there's some kind of mass-migration in progress, it can be detrimental.

Known Issue: Posts in NSFW Communities

We’ve been made aware that it is no longer possible to identify posts as NSFW in a NSFW community as of Lemmy 0.19.11 (https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/pull/2887), and as a result some posts appear to be not marked as NSFW.

While some apps (Voyager is the only one I have personally verified) do correctly flag the posts in NSFW communities as NSFW by default.

We’ve verified on 0.19.11 Lemmy will blur the image and not tag the post as NSFW, but we haven’t verified behavior from older instances viewing our communities / posts.

Due to the current time as of writing this, I’m not able to investigate further until the morning but I hope this provides some basic information on the situation for now.

If things start feeling too toxic around here, remember that the 'block' button is your friend and always there for you.

I get it. There's some real jerks around here. Whether they're constantly argumentative, downright rude, always acting in bad faith, just plain trolls, overly opinionated on every subject, have the social skills of a Nausicaan, or whatever - the Fediverse is growing, and it's bound to attract toxicity in one way or another.

This post is mostly a PSA for anyone who's feeling like leaving because they're tired of dealing with things like that. I've been there several times myself, I know exactly how you feel, and I'm tired of seeing good people harassed off the platform.

Just remember that blocking is a very powerful way to stay in control of your experience. Be it a set of users, me specifically, a list of keywords, a whole community, or an entire instance: if it's causing you nothing but stress, hit that block button and see if that improves your experience here. Unlike the alien site, there is no limit to the number of entities you can block; you're in control.

Chat link baiting.

This happened during a meta final boss fight, when the red masked individual, who was in queue, posted this chat link [PvP Game] in squad chat.

Immediately, the yellow masked individual issued a warning. Turned out that the chat link was malicious. The red's intention was to see if someone clicked the link and left the map instance (which was already full) so they could swoop in to leech the rewards.

After the meta concluded, I tested clicking on the link, and indeed I got directly teleported to

Lemmy account deletion is a mess

If at some point you want to delete your account and have your posts and comments be gone, you better delete it all manually before you actually delete the account, because that deletion process does not really work as advertised.

For my main account on world (which runs an outdated lemmy version), it seemed like at least the account deletion was federated so that my user page was no longer browsable from other instances, but none of my posts, comments or images had been deleted, not even on the home instance.

The homie @[email protected] helped me by manually deleting my stuff, but it seems like that has only worked for the home instance, posts and comments seem to still be readable from other instances (except for some of the images that MrKaplan manually deleted too, but that was only possible up to a date not too far in the past because lemmy used to not associate user uploads with the accounts). So my old posts from the world account

2.4g Controllers and interference with USB 3 ports (e.g. docks)

So far I only found some obscure mention of this issue on reddit (somewhat buried too), but for the sake of not relying on that platform anymore I thought the info should be on lemmy.

I recently got an 8bitdo ultimate 2c wireless controller to try out with my steam deck which I mostly use docked in TV mode. (Edit: I use the jsaux 6-in-1 dock.)

After initial testing looked good (2.4g mode connects, all buttons work, rumble works) I quickly ran into an issue where the controller would disconnect and shut down every minute or so or begin to rumble continuously without apparent reason. Not so in Bluetooth mode or with a cable.

What fixed the issue for me was connecting the 2.4 dongle not directly to my dock (which only has USB 3 ports) but doing so via an extension cable (edit: just a cheap male to female USB extension, the shortest one I could get).

Apparently, the active USB 3 port causes some kind of interference with the 2.4g signal, which is fixed by a few cm of physical distance

Wifi warning on the refurbished OLED decks

When the OLED decks first came out, many people found they had wifi issues after attempting to connect to 5Ghz wifi 6 enabled routers. This has thankfully been fixed with software updates, and is no longer an issue on new OLED decks.

Unfortunately, some of the refurbished OLED decks will still have this issue when first turned on. The problem will be fixed once the Deck updates, but you have to successfully connect to the internet before you can update, and this issue can make that hard to do.

The issue can also affect you if you do a factory reset on your OLED deck or reinstall SteamOS.

The issue: When connecting to a 5Ghz Wifi 6 network with certain Wifi 6 features turned on, the wifi card on the deck will crash. After that, it won't connect to any network until the Deck is rebooted.

The fix: First, you'll have to reboot the deck to restart the wifi. If it still doesn't show wifi networks after rebooting, you may have to factory reset by holding the ". . ." button while

: Vanguard now allows converting mutual funds -> ETFs online

Link is to the Bogleheads forum post where someone posted a link back in August. Before now, you had to call in to request the change, and it could take a few days, but now it's online and allegedly is done the next day.

I don't know when they added this, but I think it was sometime this year because I remember considering it last EOY (that's when I usually rebalance).

Here is a direct link, or you can get there on the website: Transact > Buy & Sell > Convert Vanguard mutual funds to ETFs. You can select either a number of shares or a percent of the total position.

As to why you may want to do this, here are a few reasons:

  • converting shares classes isn't a taxable event (but you can't go ETF -> mutual fund)
  • ETFs have a slighly lower ER (0.01-0.02% in most cases, so not huge)
  • easier if you want to ACATS transfer shares to a different brokerage
  • if you have a mix of ETFs and mutual funds, rebalancing between
