Duolingo will soon be able to help you learn another new skill: chess.

The platform’s new chess course will use short puzzles, such as moving a knight to the correct spot to practice its L-shaped movement or checkmating a king that’s stuck in a corner, to help teach you the game. You’ll also be able to play “mini-matches” or full games against Duolingo’s Oscar character, who serves as your coach through the lessons.

Duolingo gave me a brief demo of the chess course on a recent video call, and it looks like it could be a lot of fun

updated Darksynth recommendation guide

A couple months ago, I shamelessly posted a darksynth recommendation guide someone on reddit made and a lot of people here on Lemmy seemed to like it. Well, the creator of that guide just posted a new version so I'm shamelessly sharing it here again.

You can see the full-sized, zoomable version here. Once again, this was created by khroshan over on reddit, not by me.

Charlie Parker - Chi Chi, July 30th, 1953 (There's a great story in the description section of this video. I've pasted in the body of this post).

“Chi Chi” is one of Bird’s most eloquent blues lines, in the unusual key of A-flat.

On July 30th, 1953, Charlie Parker (Bird) recorded four sides for Norman Granz at Fulton Recording, NYC, accompanied by Al Haig, Percy Heath, and Max Roach.

Max Roach related an interesting anecdote to Phil Schaap concerning Bird’s composition, “Chi Chi”.

Bird came by my place one morning and I was laboring over this [music]. This is when I was recording, when Mingus and I formed the Debut Company and I did date with Cou-Manchi-Cou and all that stuff in it. And Bird came by and I said, “Damn!“ It was like 3 o’clock in the morning. I lived on 30th St. between 3rd and 2nd avenues and I had a basement apartment. He’d come by anytime and, of course, I let him in, whatever. He saw me laboring over this goddam music. He said, “What’cha doin’?“ I said, “I got a session I am producing; my first, myself, tomorrow.“ So he says, “OK here’s a gift.“ And this is the truth, Phil, he sat down at a little kitchen t

‘Ri woke up in the hotel room to the sound and smell of cooking meat, as well as what she knew to be pancakes. Opening her eyes, she looked ‘down’ to see Kyle cooking on the small grill he packed with him in his subspace shadow, one of his near-silent air purifiers directly overhead, as he was using wood to cook with; the smell of fire-grilled meat was making her ravenous, and it was with a happy stretch that she sat up,

Lor’Vah had been sitting with Kah’Sin for a few minutes when the door-chime rang. They had just gotten back from lunch with ‘Ri, and were sitting together as they watched Teh’Lana playing a game on a datapad, while they listened to some music from Earth that was quite soothing. It had been a few days of travel so far, as the human government didn’t want to make public knowledge of their teleportation technology just yet. And while she did wish to be able to walk on solid land again - the time on ‘Sanctuary’, as Kyle called it, not being quite enough time - she was happier being able to spend time with both of her daughters. ‘Ri had had to get back to work, so they didn’t know who this was, th

Darksynth recommendation guide

Darksynth is a sub-genre of Synthwave. And within darksynth, there's a sub-sub-genre for cyberpunk synth music. So if synth music feels cyberpunk to you, these recommendations are a good starting point.

Here's a higher-res version of the image (also here). This guide was created by khroshan over on reddit, I just wanted to share it.

is there/ was there/ will there ever be a perfect album?

Every album I've ever encountered seems to have a mixture of bangers and one or more meh or outright flops. It's easier than ever to skip over the tracks now, but as the question asks: what's is, in your opinion, the perfect album, or does one/can one even exist?

“The End. Ut supra, ut infra.”

I scratched my head. The small wooden sign, not much different than one would find on an old farm, floated stationary against the ink black of space. My implant recognized the second phrase as something called “Latin” and explained to me that it is an extremely ancient, dead language and it had no ability to translate the phrase.

Looking over the sign, it was quite strange. Space behind it was black, yes. But it was too black. Now don’t get me wrong, space is always black unless you’re near an iron star. This was something different though. Imagine a mirror made of a black hole, space behind the sign in all directions seemed to..not exist. In all my 300 years of life I have never foun
