I enjoyed both games but they definitely have different aesthetics

I've gushed before about how much I enjoy the Watch_Dogs games, even though there's very few similarities between Watch_Dogs 1 and 2. Hacking with a cellphone is just a fun game mechanic. Plus, they're making a Watch_Dogs movie which apparently finished filming in September. Of course, we'll see if the movie ever gets a release. Who knows anymore.

  • I tried reading this one about a decade ago. It never really clicked with me and took years to even finish it. I've always wondered if I gave it another try (and didn't get distracted with other books) if I'd understand it better or enjoy it more. But yeah, my memory of it kinda matches your experience. Wasn't a fan.

Two indie cyberpunk games were released this week (CyberCorp, Kiborg)

I've been keeping my eye on both of these games for awhile but I wasn't sure if either one of them really deserved a post here. But since they both released this week I figure one post for both games is sufficient. I should mention I haven't bought either one yet, I just thought others here might be interested.

CyberCorp is a top-down twin-stick looter-shooter. So kind of like The Ascent or Ruiner but with less story. Each mission is just clearing out enemies in a cyberpunk setting, collecting loot, and deciding what you want to keep/toss. Here's a trailer.

    Kiborg is a rogue-like be

  • I believe that black and white photo of the dude's face half-covered is from Tetsuo: The Iron Man.

Also, BLAME! Is a massive manga but it has an anime movie on Netflix.

Are there any left that haven't been identified? I think everything else has been mentioned.

  • I think the meme was going for more of the "weird" examples of cyberpunk rather than the staples of the genre. There isn't even Blade Runner on there.

  • I'd say Akira at least starts out cyberpunk with the biker gangs in the first half of the movie before going full-on biopunk in the second half. I get what you're saying though. That's why a while back I asked whether people thought eXistenZ was cyberpunk.

  • Hopefully we can be the exception to the rule!

Cyberpunk is more than an aesthetic

  • Yep, this is why posting memes is so tempting. It's an easy way to get those sweet internet points if that's all you care about. Not a great way to start discussions though...

  • That's a good point. An evil CEO can appear in various different genres but a megacorp so large nothing can stop it is pretty unique to the cyberpunk genre. That doesn't mean one is more evil or heartless then the other, but one is more uniquely cyberpunk than the other.

Which is more cyberpunk: a CEO that wields total control over a megacorp or a megacorp so massive that even its CEO is unable to affect it?

I'll admit I'm stealing this question from an r/cyberpunk post but I thought it was an interesting question and wanted to ask it here.

    To quote that original post:

On one hand, the CEO being essentially an omnipotent, untouchable king elevates the class differences to their logical extreme, but on the other hand, a corporation that is so large it feeds itself, a company so weighted and full of momentum no human can ever hope to come against it feels almost lovecraftian.

    What do you think?

    Cyberpunk @lemmy.zip

    Cyberpunk is a warning

  • You're thinking of Predator: Killer of Killers, which will be an animated movie on Hulu by the same director. Not saying it'll be any better, but it's a different thing.

  • Oooo, this is a really tough question for me. I don't tend to re-visit cyberpunk works, partially because there's so much new content to consume and partially because I don't want to get burnt out on those works. For example, when I was younger I watched Hackers and The Matrix so often that I have them both memorized, down to the inflection each line is delivered. Now if I try watching either of those movies I'm really just comparing them to my memory, not really watching them.

To answer your question though, I've definitely re-visited Tron 2.0 multiple times. That's one of the few "cozy" games for me where just the act of playing is fun to me; just the basic core gameplay loop. It doesn't matter what level I play, I enjoy it. I feel like any other video game I revisit always has "that one part" I really don't want to replay, but Tron 2.0 has so many great visuals I just love being in that world.

Other than that... hmm... maybe Blade Runner 2049 or Elysium. Those are new enough to me that they aren't stale but I'm also not obsessive about re-watching them. And I find both of them interesting.

I've listened to the Neuromancer BBC Audio Drama multiple times since it's short enough that I can just listen to it randomly. I don't tend to re-read books or re-watch anime since it takes so long to get through those and like I said, there's other (newer) content I could be disappointed by instead!

  • This is a very good point.

Will he check the box or not?

I've decided it's finally time for me to start posting memes to this community. Although my goal is to only post memes that are "about" cyberpunk and not just frames from a cyberpunk movie used to make an unrelated joke.

This is my continued attempt to keep this community alive despite having exhausted every discussion topic I can think of. I'm doing my best.

L.A.P.D 2195 - Official Trailer (spiritual successor to Future Cop: LAPD)

Not sure how I feel about playing as a cop in a cyberpunk world, but at least it does take place in a cyberpunk world. And it's inspired by the old 1998 game Future Cop: LAPD. The graphics look kinda janky so far, but we'll see how it goes.

A modern Multiplayer and Co-Op re-imagining of the classic game "Future Cop L.A.P.D.”, you are a rookie cop in the Mech-Assisted Security and Tactics (M.A.S.T.) unit of the Los Angeles Police Department in the year 2195.

  • I really wasn't trying to make a "let's all shit on Matrix Resurrections" post here. I was hoping for more of a discussion about at what point something stops being cyberpunk. I guess I misjudged things...

  • Now that's an interesting question... would the movie have been better if the Wachowskis weren't involved at all? I'd argue the movie would've been better if none of the previous cast came back. The story should've been some new incarnation of The One (not Keanu Reeves) as the cycle repeats (the Architect talks about it being the 6th iteration). Or they could've even moved the world forward by having humans and machines working together but "oh no! the matrix is breaking/failing for some reason and we have to fix it!"

Unfortunately, we all know it was just WB saying "we need a cash cow... Wachowskis! Make us another!" and they had to scramble to come up with a story.

Do you consider Matrix Resurrections to be cyberpunk?

The Matrix is one of the most well-known cyberpunk movies; I'm not going to argue its cyberpunk qualities. But 20 years after The Matrix was relevant, we got a cash-grab sequel in Matrix Resurrections.

My question to you is: Is there anything cyberpunk left in Matrix Resurrections? Or has the franchise been so diluted that what's left is no longer cyberpunk? For example, in the first movie Neo was a hacker. By this movie, I really wouldn't call him a hacker anymore. But maybe the themes of "what it means to be human" still remain?

Here's a trailer. You can still watch it on Max.

  • I'd love for you to add a link to this community, thanks!

As for a description, I don't know what to say. My goal is to make this a place to discuss cyberpunk as a sci-fi genre and not complaining about the current world turning into a cyberpunk dystopia. So the only news items I'll post will be about upcoming movies/games, not whatever stupid thing Amazon did recently. But that's just me, it's not like I enforce it or anything. Lemmy as a whole is so small that any new content at all is preferable to a dead community.

  • How do you decide what to add? Is it automated or do you just add things anytime you stumble upon something new?

  • On the homepage, is the "latest watch", "latest play", "latest read" the latest thing you've actually watched, played, read or just the latest items added to the website?

Initial artwork for new Ghost in the Shell anime (coming 2026)

Also, here's a new teaser trailer that doesn't really show anything.

And some quotes taken from this article:

Today, the official title, key staff, teaser trailer, and visuals for the new TV anime series have been revealed. Previously announced in May 2024 as a new project from Science SARU, the series now has its official title: THE GHOST IN THE SHELL, keeping the same title as the original manga’s.

This marks the directorial debut of Mokochan, known for his work on DAN DA DAN and SCOTT PILGRIM TAKES OFF. The script was written by acclaimed sci-fi author EnJoe Toh (Self-Reference ENGINE, Shadow.net). Character Design & Executive Animation Directing are handled by Shuhei Handa (SCOTT PILGRIM TAKES OFF, SPRIGGAN). Produced by Science SARU, known for INU-OH and Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, the anime is set to air in 2026.

LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS VOLUME 4 | Official Teaser | Netflix (May 15)

Not every episode is cyberpunk but most episodes are interesting. Can't wait for another season!

  • I agree, I think the story will be the weakest part. Visuals look amazing, soundtrack will be awesome, but I don't like how they're just dropping the Sam Flynn/Quorra storyline.

Also, I know this is a nit-pick not worth worrying about but I find it weird having Recognizers (the two-legged floating transports) in the real world. In The Grid, things can float because it's all inside a computer anyway, gravity is just a function of programming. But you can't just teleport a Recognizer into the real world and have it float. It's not like the people within The Grid invented anti-grav technology or something, it's just a program. For some reason I'm fine with having lightcycles in the real world and yet having Recognizers just breaks my suspension of disbelief. And I'm sure the movie won't even try explaining things like that; it'll just be a dumb, fun, action movie.

Neuromancer (BBC radio play) - for those of you who struggled with the novel

In my last post a couple people mentioned that the Neuromancer novel is a pretty dense read and tough to follow. If you agree, I recommend listening to the BBC radio drama from 2002. It's only 2 hours long but it follows the plot of the story really well and has great production.

Definitely check it out if you've got 2 hours and struggled with the novel, or if it's just been awhile since you read it. This is a great adaptation.

"The Costume Is Insane": Emma Laird Teases Her Role in the Upcoming 'Neuromancer' Adaptation

There isn't much in this article, other than a reminder that Neuromancer is currently filming in Tokyo. Also, I don't think it's been announced what role Emma Laird has so I don't know if it really hurts things for her to not have read the book. We'll see how well this quote ages though:

It’s a very confusing book, but I think somehow bringing that onto the screen helps tell that story maybe a bit more clearly.

I'm struggling with some cyberpunk classics

I've read quite a bit of (what I consider to be) the main classic cyberpunk novels. Stuff like The Sprawl trilogy, Hardwired, Snow Crash. I've also read some proto-cyberpunk novels like The Stars My Destination, The Machine Stops, and various Philip K Dick stories.

So I decided to delve a bit deeper into some lesser-known "classic" cyberpunk novels. And I'm struggling. I tried reading Synners, The Shockwave Rider, and [Headcrash](https://www.amazon.com/Headcrash-Bruce-Bet

Veiled Edge - cyberpunk action platformer

Veiled Edge is in early access right now, but there's a demo available and I really enjoyed it so I'm hoping they'll be able to finish the game. The gameplay reminds me a lot of Sanabi but instead of a grappling hook for movement, Veiled Edge uses a teleportation mechanic.

The game currently has a Kickstarter active but it looks like they're pretty terrible at marketing their own game so I don't think many people will find it. I'm not too optimistic about the kickstarter succeeding but I hope they'll still be able to finish the game even if it fails.

Anyway, if you like 2D platformers like Sanabi, I highly recommend at least trying the demo.

Lazarus | OFFICIAL TRAILER | adult swim (new anime from creator of Cowboy Bebop)

I had posted a first look at this anime a couple months ago. The video didn't explain anything but what it did show looked vaguely cyberpunk.

Now with this new trailer explaining the plot... I'm not sure it's cyberpunk at all. Maybe it's near-future, but that's about it. Still, it's from Shinichirō Watanabe (creator of Cowboy Bebop) so maybe people here will still be interested in it.

The trailer says the show will air on Toonami starting April 5 and next day on Max.
