How to upgrade to Windows 11 - most privacy, freedom and efficiency

There are a ton of people using EOL (end of life) Windows versions, which is kinda scary. Not few of them do so because Microsoft has made updating something negatively associated, which is also incredible.

Updating software is essential, please do so. If you don't want to and don't need Windows-only software, there are a bunch of penguin people that happily guide your way through Linux.

I recently installed Win11 for a friend who needs Adobe software, and I think I have achieved a near perfect result, with minimal hassle.

This guide will show you how to do a clean install of nearly unchanged Windows 11, and adapt it with a few free and open source tools, to be less invasive and resource intense.

If you don't want to reinstall, the german tech news channel Heise has made a Registry hack that allows upgrading normally to Windows 11, if your hardware is unsupported.

Marvel Rivals Version 20250214 Patch Notes - Steam News (February 12, 2025)

It's not a big message, so I copied it here over. To me it is notable that they specifically address a Linux Gaming distribution called Bazzite, to correct a bug/mistake on it caused by the game. This note is also under the "General" headline, so they take it serious. I am really really happy about this.

Greetings, Rivals!

We're thrilled to announce that the upcoming patch drops on February 13, 2025, at 09: 00: 00 (UTC+0)! This update will also be applied without server downtime—so you can dive right back into your epic battles as soon as the update is live!

Here's a look at what's coming in this patch:

I'm in the middle of a mass migration to Linux, and my gaming PC is the last holdout. I do most of my gaming on a TV with a controller, so I love the idea of a console-like OS like Bazzite, which is perfect for my use case.

That said, I have an AMD 7800 XT video card that I'd love to use to its full potential: 4k@120Hz, HDR, and VRR. All of this works fine with Windows over HDMI, but with the HDMI forum rejecting AMD's HDMI 2.1 drivers, this isn't possible on Linux.

I've tried every DisplayPort to HDMI cable under the sun, including the Cable Matters cable some claim works (it doesn'

My Experience With The ROG Ally Z1E (Windows/Bazzite)

Hello there, gamers!

Ever since the handheld boom since 2022, I wanted to use one because of the concept; play any game anywhere and without the annoyances of a PC. I bought a Steam Deck OLED earlier this year, but because of personal reasons I am now using an ROG Ally (Got it at a huge discount) . This is my experience of using the device for over 3 weeks now.

Disclaimer: I am a Linux user (Left Windows in 2016) and I don't play games which require anti-cheats, so this post might seem biased. However, I'll try to be as much factual as possible. I'll list the pros and cons of both the OSs as per my personal experience.

The Windows experience

There is nothing new to say, everyone knows the first bootup process. Enter your mandatory Microsoft account to access the device. I know there are workarounds for a local account but I didn't want to jinx it. You get greeted with Armory Crate which shows how to manage your device.

Bluetooth Audio Issues when launching a game?

Hi there, I just acquired myself the Sennheiser Momentum 4, mainly for using while communting + work. But figured i'd try them out for some gaming too. They work just fine when watching YT or any video, but when I launch a game the audio quality changes significantly. I have no idea how or why its doing it, nor how to fix it. I've tried all of these different audio profile options, but all of them make the audio either distorted, weak, or make it sound like the audio is trapped inside a room... Anyone know how to go about this? Audio works fine with my normal non-wireless headset.

My system is running Bazzite.

Appreciate any pointers to how to resolve this.

Fedora Kinoite Duplex Printing Issue

Hello! I use Bazzite Linux with KDE, and I'm having some issues with duplex printing on my system.

I have a Brother HL-L2300D, and I've already installed the drivers for it. Brother provides an install script for their driver on their website, but because my system is rpm-ostree based and immutable, I would get rpm-ostree errors and the installation would fail.

I found a Reddit post yesterday that suggested running sudo rpm-ostree install printer-driver-brlaser, which worked and I was able to connect to the printer and configure everything as needed.

However, when I try to print on both sides of the page, the back side of the page prints upside-down. I've tried changing the setting for which edge to flip when printing (portrait/landscape), and it doesn't seem to change anything. I printed the same document on a Windows machine on this printer, and it went through just fine, so I've isolated the problem down to the CUPS server that my machine is running.

Are there any Game console gui programs other than steam? For example, think of having the Nintendo switch ui instead of kde, xfce, gnome, etc

Does this question make sense? I plan on building a gaming only pc and I wanted to see if every time it turns on, it goes directly to a gui that reflects that console feel.

Edit: Thanks to everyone here for helping, and to your diversity on the matter. It appears there were multiple solutions and just in case anyone in the future needs this I'll paste the gui's here. I'll keep adding to the edit if another solution appears as well. By the way I sent an email to Playnites dev in hopes of a native linux version but with any luck you can just try wine on that

Planning build: Power efficient headless steam machine, and later upgrade for AI tasks

Background

I'm planning on building a secondary server that can process more intense tasks than my current basic home server. Tasks such as light gaming (think "remote Steam Deck"), and later allowed to be upgraded with a Nvidia graphics card to handle AI tasks, such as LLM and SD.

The problem

While I have no problem picking parts to build this as a "desktop computer", I'm completely lost when trying to make it power efficient for idle load (if it's even possible with a power-hungry Nvidia card). I'd appreciate some guidance even if it's not a full parts list suggestion!

Watching Wolfgang's videos has unfortunately not translated knowledge into practice for me yet. At least I know TDP isn't an absolute determining factor anymore.

Planning the build

Due to a limited budget, the idea is split the build in 2 phases.

Phase 1 (gaming):

  • Budget: $1000 (ideally below ~$800):
  • Use for l
