So you want to join the fediverse?

I have a draft designed for all types of fediverse software, but i narrowed it down to just threadiverse stuff

This is a guide meant to be linked for beginners, to explain the fediverse in as short time as possible.

Concepts

What's "federation"?

In easy terms; it's a concept where instances seamlessly integrate with each other. Users can talk to each other and participate in their communities. For example, my account is on lemm.ee and the community i am posting to is on slrpnk.net, yet i feel no friction.

What's an instance?

An instance is a server running software, with users, and communities, etc. (Each of these is like a mini-reddit/twitter/etc!) The software part is important, since instances can either be forums, microblogs, video-sharing sites, etc etc. And they can all interact with each other!

What's the "fediverse"?

The fediverse (federation + universe) is a coalition of federated instances running all types of different software, so a user from a forum instan

Alternative UIs for our Instance

I am in the opinion that some alternative UIs should be available on the instance (domain) – if possible, of course. Lemmy.world already has many alt. UIs, I think we should have something like that. So, here's a list:

Introduction

Greetings everybody! Slrpnk.net now has two Admins! On the 16th of October @poVoq gave me admin privileges, and I'm now involved in approving applications, responding to report tickets, and coordinating with other instance administrators. Your main admin is continuing to do those things as well, in addition to sysadmin tasks and technology improvements, and we are coordinating over XMPP to keep our actions consistent and in line with Slrpnk's values. Thank you @ProdigalFrog and @punkisundead for your warm endorsements, your support means a lot to me.

XMPP chat integration

As mentioned last month, Slrpnk.net is running an Ejabberd service. Movim.Slrpnk.net hosts a web-client you can use with your current username and password. After logging in to the Movim client, your XMPP account will be active, and you can access Slrpnk chat with any XMPP compatible Android or Apple client. You can find a

SLRPNK community discussion - October 2023

First off, we are still looking for feedback on the Photon & Alexandrite alternative Lemmy UI trials. Please comment in the linked posts.

Technical server updates

Server migration was completed last month and it is generally working well on this new 8 threads, 16GB RAM machine. There is a problem left with occasional stalling of the database writes for which the source has been identified, but it will likely require some hardware replacement and thus a small down-time later this month. But having everything on a dedicated machine allows me in theory to give additional server admins access, but we first need to identify people willing and able to help out with that (more on that below)

Due to active ongoing upstream development the CSAM scanning tool was not yet enabled, but preparation work is complete and it should be easy to start soon.

Periodic Check In: Infra Status, Image Uploads, Consolidating Lemmy Frontends, New Default UI

Figured it was time for another status update. Will try to keep it brief.

System/Infrastructure Status

We are within allowances for all metered resources (bandwidth, disk, etc) and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. Translated: it still isn't costing me any extra money to host DubVee.

Image Uploads Have Been Re-Enabled (With Limits)

Image uploads have been re-enabled but with a limit of 150kb. This is mostly to support setting your profile avatars, but I don't have enough granular control to limit it to just that purpose. As such, you can add images to posts/comments as long as the file you're uploading is less than 150KB.

Consolidating Lemmy Frontends

For quite some time, I've offered just about every alternative Lemmy front-end available. Logs have shown some to never be used, including by me. To simplify administration, I've removed Voyager and Photon from the offerings.

The remaining options are:

If you don't like the layout of regular Lemmy, feel free to use these :) (They can also be used for instances other than ours. Except for mlmym, they only have a single instance mode and no default instance config)

And in case you're wondering why we aren't using old.lemmy, a.lemmy etc instead...

YSK: You can use alexandrite (alternative lemmy web front-end) to switch your default post layout and easily switch between lemmy accounts

I use alexandrite to switch between different lemmy instances and change the default post layout to card style. When I first started using lemmy, the I found the difference between the reddit and lemmy in the post feed to be jarring as I was used to a card style layout.

I find on a desktop browser, I prefer to be able to see images without opening a thread. I initially used kbin.social exclusively for this feature but disliked the way their sorting algorithms are setup. Having the ability to easily switch instances is also a nice feature particularly for new users who are unsure what lemmy instance they want to use.

DubVee Reflections, Thoughts, Operational Status, and Future

Now that this instance has been running for a little over two months, I thought it was a good time to zoom out a bit and do a little reflection.

Two Month Reflections

First, I cannot believe it's only been two months; it seems way longer than that (in both a good way and an "I'm so tired, you guys" way). While I do run other public-facing services, they're much more hands-off as far as day-to-day work is concerned. Lemmy, on the other hand, is very much like a living organism, almost a pet, that requires near constant supervision, interaction, and attention. The codebase is being rapidly developed, updated, and patched, new vulnerabilities and rough edges being discovered and mitigated, and bad actors constantly looking to exploit, DoS, spam, troll, or just shit all over the place.

It's not all bad, though. In the same two months, many new and exciting projects have sprung up to give Lemmy a fresh face with new UIs. DubVee is happy to offer several of those as official

alexandrite.app - [email protected] - Github

You can now pick between list (default), compact, and card layouts for posts in the feed. Use card if you want to see large images and a preview of the post content as you scroll (card is my favorite now).

Use compact if you want to see as many posts as possible.

The rest of these are things I've announced over at the Alexandrite community ([email protected]) but not here yet.

You can now create an account through Alexandrite.

How many fediverse instances are you signed up with?

Title.

Newbie, recently joined, 7/1/23.

Right now, I'm on three: Lemmy.world (my 'main' or 'home'), kbin, and Blahaj Lemmy. I'm looking at Reddthat and sh.itjust.works as well.

Just curious. I know most of the content will overlap, but there are differences in philosophy/moderator style, etc.

Do you like having ONE instance?

I'm loving Alexandrite as the Dove dark chocolate enrobing my lemmy.world ice cream bar!

Atualizações, falhas e o futuro

Ora viva,

Alexandrite UI

Check out Alexandrite! It's an alternative Lemmy UI.

It supports many different instances (must be 0.18.1+, I believe) including lemmy.world and lemm.ee. I think it looks really good, it's really smooth, and even has some nice features like live Markdown preview.
