I'm interested in hosting my own Lemmy instance. Never done any hosting but I have done a good bit of programming/web development in my life so I don't think I'll struggle.
Just curious if anyone has any good advice or common mistakes that I could avoid.
Also if there is already a thread or community around creating Lemmy instances, I'd love links to them!
So I've been thinking about this as my community is watching reports of FBI unload heroin, cocaine, fentanyl crossing the border. As my family is talking about how they should deport all the democrats on the left, I was thinking how this wouldn't fix anything.
War on drugs will go on and on because of who? People who buys the hard drugs. Who buys hard drugs? Happy people working a regular job? No, I would think a happy person doesn't just shoot up some heroin. Homeless people, sad and depressed people, the people society treats like trash.
The war on drugs is really a war on the working class if you think about it. If we fix wealth inequality, I have no doubt that there will be less drugs on the streets. Of course, we will still want drug rehab and stuff but in the big picture, it's getting people to not even try drugs in the first place.
But you know, that's just a theory...a game theory.

Hi guys, I'm trying to read this article my boss sent me, but I can't find a way to read it. Tried archive.org, archive.is, reader mode, incognito mode, different browsers, tried removing the paywall thing with ublock, but nothing seems to work. Would any of you be able to help me out?
I really just want to read this one article and have no interest in getting a subscription; I would then have to set a reminder to cancel it which would likely involve a lengthy phone call with their support, which I'm really hoping to avoid.
Previously, I asked the question here and I got quite a few answers. 😃
Due to the nature oft my question it seems to be the best to "reply to all" ...... but how to do this (technically)?
I need help solving a frequent bug-bite problem. My young child gets lots of bug bites (dozens), seemly every day or so, and I can't find the cause or get it to stop. I have:
Pulled up all the carpet and padding so there are only hard-wood floors.
Sealed the window.
Sealed/used gap-filler on all the edges where the wall meets the floor.
Switched out the mattress for one from a hospital, which is sealed and hypo-allergenic.
Applied repellent spray on all edges, corners, and cracks.
Vacuumed regularly and always switch out clean sheets/blankets.
Treated all pets in the house for fleas.
I believe it is isolated to this bedroom because all other members of the house use all other rooms and furniture but nobody else is suffering any bites at all. However, I am at a loss as to what could be causing it. All I can think of left is:
The hardwood floors that now remain, having pulled up the carpeting, do have tiny cracks between them. Perhaps there is something underne
Feels like all of a sudden every thread I open has the worst takes in the comments: religious apologists, conservative propagandists, people defending the worst abuses of power, people stanning for CEOs, middle managers and other corporate ghouls, people defending shitty landlords, etc.
Is this Reddit now? Is this going to be the death of Lemmy as a bastion of progressives?
