Book Review: House of Leaves

I consider myself a writer. However, I fear writing, and I fear publishing more. For writing is agonising. And, I don't dare to publish until I really have a story to tell. My fear accumulated over time by reading more, by reading books just like this. And, I will tell my fellow writers this: If you are not really as serious as Danielewski, Borges, Tagore, Pessoa, or Jibanananda, stop writing.

The structure of this book is recursive, layered and of a madman. It is a book you should approach with an arsenal of bookmarks, much patience for multiple re-readings and the intention to read cover-to-cover, footnotes and appendix and all. While some of the references in this book are purely fictional, many are real. It is not necessary, but some familiarity with classic literature and existential philosophy (resources like Being and Time by Martin Heidegger) can be very rewarding. I will also recommend reading Walking by Thomas Bernhard, which deals with madness singularly, unlike this book,

    1. Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid by Douglas R. Hofstadter
    2. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

You may already know what EpubPress is. It is a tool for creating EPUB from web pages. The easiest way to do so is by using their browser plugin.

Unfortunately, that plugin doesn't work on the mobile browsers. That is why I created this webapp where you can set the name and description of the book and a list of links (one per line) and generate an EPUB. The EPUB will be downloaded automatically once generated.

  • It is interesting to see the Pope using secular arguments instead of simply saying God won't approve (which is completely valid from a religious perspective). The invocation of God in any serious opinion is silly, and now even religious leaders know that.

  • In the case of current LLMs, we can tell. These LLMs are not black boxes to us. It is hard to follow the threads of their decisions because these decisions are just some hodgepodge of statistics and randomness, not because they are very intricate thoughts.

We can't compare the outputs, probably, but compute the learning though. Imagine a human with all the literature, ethics, history, and all kind of texts consumed like that LLMs, no amount of trick questions would have tricked him to believe in racial cleansing or any such disconcerting ideas. LLMs read so much, and learned so little.

  • Yes. LLMs generate texts. They don't use language. Using a language requires an understanding of the subject one is going to express. LLMs don't understand.

I think it might be useful for some. Especially for those who prefer their notes and highlights well organized.

  • As a Bangladeshi I have the same thing to say. This is even unthinkable here. Not even students will find it appropriate here.

  • A Digital Garden is a website where nurture your thoughts publicly. Mistakes are fine (unlike in blogs, where we tend to publish only the finished works), interactions are encouraged.

  • Yes. And it makes many sites more browsable in phone.

  • Using it since the last major revamp of Firefox Android on all my devices.

  • Using firefox exclusively on all my devices since the last major revamp of the Firefox Android.

  • One should share even good things (e.g. achievements) of children carefully. I've seen parents continuously sharing even minuscule achievements of their children and trying to prove how smart they are as parents, or the children are prodigies.

If they become underachievers (in comparison to how their parents portrayed them), they will find it very difficult to cope with. One shouldn't burden children with one's ambitions.

  • The best thing about Obsidian is it follows your flow, not the other way around. I moved from Joplin (for 2 reasons, No plugins in mobile and no metadata mechanism) and luckily I moved early before making too many notes to migrate.

    Hello all!

Here's a community dedicated to discussion regarding techniques and tools for maintaining Digital Gardens. Since, many manage Digital Gardens using Obsidian (I do, for example), I thought sharing here makes sense.
