It turns out HEVC decoding on Linux with Firefox 137 and newer does work, but only for MP4 media container and MKV media container is not supported. The bug is open and tracked here: Support mkv|matroska|video/x-matroska in Firefox | bugzilla.mozilla.org
Hello, HEVC decoding works natively with media using .MP4 containers, but it will transcode when using .MKV containers. Found this information on reddit and verified it on my Jellyfin.

I live in a rented place, they were doing repairs to the heating systems, several times we had brown water coming out the tap. I bet they installed the cheapest option, plus the debris in the water, this fucked it.
Just invest in a good thermostatic faucet and never look back !
Definitely not :) I had to get it replaced at my flat this year. There is a filter inside that can get block if you have hard water or debris.
Growing up in rural France, we had these at home for as far as I can remember. They may not have been the norm 30 years ago, but at least common.

Firefox HEVC playback with HW acceleration, does it actually works ?
Hello all, Recently Firefox 137 was announces with the addition of HEVC playback with hardware acceleration support for Linux. I am using Firefox 137 installed via DNF on Fedora 41, but if I try to play HEVC video for example from my Jellyfin, it will have to transcode, if I go try this test sample it straight up not play, so what's up with that ? Playing content with mpv will work just fine. Firefox also reports HEVC decoding as supported. Same result with both my desktop with AMD iGPU and dGPU, as well as my laptop with just Intel iGPU.

Using refurbished HDDs in my livingroom NAS
Hello all,
This is a follow-up from my previous post: Is it a good idea to purchase refurbished HDDs off Amazon ?
In this post I will give you my experience purchasing refurbished hard drives and upgrading my BTRFS RAID10 arrray by swaping all the 4 drives.
TL;DR: All 4 drives work fine. I was able to replace the drives in my array one at a time using an USB enclosure for the data transfer !
After reading the reply from my previous post, I ended up purchasing 4x WD Ultrastar DC HC520 12TB hard drives from Ebay (Germany). The delivery was pretty fast, I received the package within 2 days. The drive where very well packed by the seller, in a special styrofoam tray and anti-static bags
I connect the drives to a spare computer I have and spin-up an Ubuntu Live USB to run a S.MA.R.T check and read the values. SMART checks and data are available from

Is it a good idea to purchase refurbished HDDs off Amazon ?
I see some fairly interesting prices for refurbished drives on Amazon, 35~40% cheaper than new. Example here: 16TB Seagate Exos X18 Refurbished at 166€ and New at 260€.
I am considering this option for my home NAS, running with BTRFS RAID10, plus important files are backed-up to a cloud storage, but not my media collection.
In your opinion, how risky is it to use refurbished drives ? Do you have to good or bad experience doing so ?
