  • While that is true, for how long can you resist gravity? Gravity is the endurance hunter of the fundamental forces. Sure, you can lift your arm and resist the entire earth's gravity. But for how long, before you succumb to gravity's irresistible pull?

  • Docker is a set of tools, that make it easier to work with some features of the Linux kernel. These kernel features allow several degrees of separating different processes from each other. For example, by default each Docker container you run will see its own file system, unable to interact (read: mess) with the original file system on the host or other Docker container. Each Docker container is in the end a single executable with all its dependencies bundled in an archive file, plus some Docker-related metadata.

  • I just checked and it was 1996 for me as well. I started with DLD and a 2.0 kernel. Man, those were hard times. There was no internet, I could only dial into a BBS, where I could chat with people who were using Linux. If I had problems setting up dial-up? Well... Also getting a printer to work still haunts me to this day.

  • 530 dollars for 251 games in almost 22 years of service. Steam only logged about 210 hours in those years, which is bullshit. There's almost no time recorded in Half-life, Day of defeat or Counterstrike and those are the games I played the most. I also got most games through Humblebundle, where I spent 270 dollars since June 2012. But as I haven't been playing much on PC ever since the PS3 came out, the real money went to Sony and I don't even want to know.

  • I do enjoy the new assistant in JetBrains tools, the one that runs locally. It truly helps with the trite shit 90% of the time. Every time I tried code gen AI for larger parts, it's been unusable.

  • Violence

  • Violence is always the solution. If there's an example for major changes implemented without at least an implicit threat of violence, that's the absolute exception. All big changes always require (the threat of) violence.

  • I never saw a benefit in using Lombok, but I did run into issues with it. As it works outside the compiler, you are basically writing Java+Lombok. And as the article says, with an IDE and a recent JDK there is really no benefit provided by Lombok.

  • Hall effect sensors are crazy expensive. Sony has controllers with them and they're more than twice as expensive as the normal ones. It's very unlikely that Sony would set this insane price without a good reason.

    Notifications for Wireguard peer (dis)connects?

I am building a Wireguard tool for myself and I would like to receive events when a peer connects or disconnects. Does someone know if this is possible through some kernel API or EBPF?

    Literature on repairing?

    Hi,

Is there good literature on how to repair stuff? Just general things, not specific appliances. How to repair wood, how to properly sand wood and metal, how to replace a tile, how to read and analyze circuits, identify faulty parts and correct replacements, etc. I just want to become better at repairing stuff.

    Looking for MiTV box replacement

I have a MiTV box with Android that runs apps for Jellyfin, Prime Video and Disney Plus. I would like to replace it with a mini PC, like some N100 box, to have more control over what runs on it. I tried a Pi with Kodi once, but I hate the UI so much. It's just not my thing.

What other options do I have with self-hosted alternatives? I want a central UI like AndroidTV offers, I need Jellyfin, Disney Plus, Prime Video and some local TV station's streaming offerings and some remote control.

I don't think that's possible, as you can only run Disney and Prime in a browser or their apps. And using a browser on the TV is not nice UX. But maybe some of the great people here have cracked that nut and can help me.

    Good free TTS (text-to-speech) options?

Are there any free/open-source TTS options out there that are on the same level as Google Cloud's? I tried a lot of free ones, but they are absolutely awful and still sound like my Amiga did 30 years ago. With LLMs being available as open source, I am hoping there's also a good TTS offering I just haven't found yet.

Barrier/Input Leap/other KVM server for Wayland?

I really want to use Wayland, but the lack of a Wayland-based KVM sharing tool is an absolute deal breaker for me. I tried so many of them, but none worked. Waynergy looks alright, but it's only a client. rkvm didn't work at all and I don't remember the names of the other tools I tried. I know that Input Leap/Barrier has met their donation goal for Wayland support, but I am not holding my breath that it'll work with wlr.

Has anyone gotten KVM sharing to work with a Wayland host and other Linux clients?

    Source for Comics?

    Hi,

I am always looking for sources for comics, particularly franco-belgian in English or German. The only sources I can find are these godawful download sites where you need to pay or your download takes a day.

    Anyone have better sources?

    Edit: Thanks a lot everyone!

Wanted: audio library streaming plus Spotify

I am looking for something I can run on a Pi that gives me access to my private audio library plus Spotify, because I hate switching apps. I want to access it from a desktop and Android. Does someone have something like this set up?
