  • i've heard good things about Isekai Ramen, and we will likely go check it out sometime soon. Also curious about Dave & Laverne's.

Heard mixed reviews on Belle's, but at least we have another BBQ option here.

  • hey! thanks for the offer to help. feel free to offer to help mod any communities, and if there's any local communities here that look unmoderated, let us know! that would be a good start.

  • it is on our todo list, see shadow's updated comment here: https://lemmy.ca/comment/14573698

  • looks like the main post link is updated now. thanks Sunshine!

  • here's a link directly to the article, instead of having to scroll through a bunch of unrelated stuff: https://www.halifaxexaminer.ca/morning-file/male-rage-is-a-sign-of-weakness-not-strength/#V2

  • apparently, yes. crosses, anyways:

The ban, meant to separate the state from religion, also outlaws Christian crosses, Jewish kippahs and Sikh turbans.

  • i'm just guessing at this point, but if you send just the login command to the bot, it sounds like it should give you some options on how to login? what are the options it gives you in response, if anything? and have you tried any of them?

  • have you followed the instructions here?

    https://docs.mau.fi/bridges/python/telegram/authentication.html

    this section specifically mentions:

Telegram officially discontinued registration from 3rd party clients as of 2023-02-18, so support for it was removed in v0.13.0 of the bridge. You should sign up using a mobile client and then log into the bridge.

so not sure if that's the issue you're running into (the timing matches up, anyways).

i've never used the telegram bridge myself, but i have other bridges running successfully.

  • Blackberry is a great movie. Love Baruchel and Howerton in their roles.

Also enjoyed many Cronenberg and Villeneuve movies too.

  • Cube is fantastic. I like to rewatch it every now and then. The sequels, not as good, imo.

  • Henri et Victoria is a canadian company that makes their own shaving soap, I believe? I might give them a shot.

  • on the Sopranos wikipedia page it clearly says the theme song is by "Alamaba 3". Reading the article, it says:

The show's opening theme is "Woke Up This Morning" (Chosen One Mix), written by, remixed and performed by British band Alabama 3.

With no references of Cohen anywhere. So a good chunk of the internet is wrong. Thus why AI shows conflicting information too.

  • oops, sorry, fixed! thanks!

  • yep. and for the self-hosters it's easy to setup a private instance of it. i fairly recently set one up, and it's been great.

also, mike, who set that up, also runs a smaller Canadian mastodon instance, with about 150 registered monthly active users, so if you're looking for a smaller mastodon instance, that's an option too.

  • ooh I remember hearing about that. I'll edit my original comment.

  • i wonder if cira is having issues because searching domains on their site is returning an error, and i've tried a few different domain registrars and all .ca domains seems to be coming up as unavailable.

  • they're listed on their website as "available"? https://www.gandi.net/en-CA/domain/tld/ca

i thought i had a .ca with them at one point in time, but could be wrong too. i dunno.

  • not Canadian, but gandi is based in France and offers an api to update dns for free with domain registration through them. i think their prices are decent too? it's been a while since i've looked at them.

i'm guessing a lot of the smaller domain registrars aren't going to offer dynamic dns.

edit: avoid gandi. bought out by private equity firm, now jacking up renewal prices. i heard that previously but had forgotten about it. sorry!

    Announcement: Two new admins

    Hello All,

Our current admins have busy lives, but we want to make sure we're still on top of growing and maintaining lemmy.ca. As such we've decided to add two new admins to help out. Please welcome @[email protected] and @[email protected]. Both have been active with generating reports and keeping the site free from spammers and trolls, and both have experience moderating other communities too. We are confident they will help make the site even better!

This is a little late, but I figure that it's better late than never!

For full transparency, I'm just going to give a high level overview of the financial situation of lemmy.ca through June 2023, when I started to accept donations.

    Total Expenses: $30.00

This includes all hosting fees, including backups, etc.

    Total Contributions: $1,503.03

    • $1,184.84 through LiberaPay
    • $318.19 through OpenCollective

All contribution amounts are not including payment processor and/or OpenCollective fees.

    Remaining Balance: $1,473.03

I plan on transferring the remaining balance to the new admin team, whenever they are ready to accept it.

Thank you to all that have contributed so far, I couldn't have gotten the instance to where it is now without your generosity. I'm very excited to see what comes next and look forward to watching the instance grow more!

    New Admins, Server Upgraded

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ca/post/1044064

As you may have already noticed, 3 new admins have been added. Welcome @[email protected] , @[email protected] , and @[email protected]! There are also many more people that are helping behind the scenes as well. They have many years of experience moderating various subreddits, and I believe that they can bring lemmy.ca to the next level.

We have been collaborating so that they will be taking over hosting this instance. When I initially volunteered to take over this instance early in 2022, I was thinking it would just be a hobby project, and I really had no idea what I was getting myself into. With the surge of new users in the past few weeks, and potentially a lot more to come soon, I decided that I don't have the time or energy required to dedicate to running this site, and it just so happened that they were looking for a new home too.

Preemptive Blocking of Instances with high potential bot counts

I have taken the advice from this post and blocked all instances with > 10,000 users, from this list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vRthB7RtY4Rr0t5fhVKaliJnwSmptMc5oJi7uha_OBcF4wpu4eElxAxNzaCqjlq6NsOE9GpgSnMzZ2x/pubhtml

I will continue to monitor things and will make another announcement if more blocks are necessary.

If anybody is interested in getting a cleaned up instance federated again, feel free to contact me over DM (if you’re currently blocked, you can contact me on Matrix: @smorks:40to.ca).

    Release Notes

edit: don't forget to enable 2FA, since it's now supported!

edit2: seems like federation with mastodon (and maybe others?) is broken, tried with a few different instances, including lemmy.ml. 😥

I mentioned in one of my previous posts that emails from lemmy.ca didn't appear to be working for a small number of people. This issue should hopefully resolved now. Please let me know if you aren't receiving them still.

Also, I created a [email protected] community, where all the news about this instance will go. I'll cross post it to main for a while before switching over to meta only eventually.
