DDNS backup endpoints possible?

I have 3 DDNS hostnames from 3 separate providers. I have had issues with at least 2 of them where the updater got messed up, or the service required a login to keep it from going "dormant". This was slow for me to catch...

Can I add multiple "endpoints" to my config file to get some redundancy, or will this just cause problems?

  • People should never trust Amazon or the "% off deal" that Amazon is advertising. Always verify against camelcamelcamel.com to ensure that the price is actually a deal and not artificially inflated due to some demand spike or their algorithm thinking that you really need it right now.

  • I have no suggestions for a hub that does what you want. However, Homeassistant does all of what you want and more.

If you have a box that HA can run on, just try it. You can integrate things you would not even expect. You can get the official Zigbee usb dongle from Nabu Casa or from anywhere you choose. Then just start pulling over one device at a time getting comfortable with HA. You can add a Z-Wave dongle, a Thread dongle, and more.

With Home Assistant the best place to start is to just get it running on your network and see all the stuff it finds on its own. Then get a Zigbee dongle and start moving things over as slow as you like. This is by far the best path rather than relying on some other hub that will eventually EOL and leave you hanging again.

Automations in HA are very easy, and coming from HomeKit, they are an absolute dream to work with.

Don't wait to order something to get started with HA, just install it on whatever you have lying around or install it in a VM with VirtualBox if you have nothing else. Get used to it and then plan out how you want to go forward. If you find that you hate HA, it would be nice to know before you drop any $$$ on it.

  • I want to add that in many places in the US it is not just the distance, but the danger and outright discouragement of walking somewhere. For example, I contemplated using a train to get to Lego Land in California from Oceanside, California. After getting off of the train I would have to walk 1.3 miles, which is only a minor inconvenience. However, after reviewing the walking route google has this qualifier: "Use caution - may involve errors or sections not suited for walking". This prompted me to review the walk using street view and I came to the conclusion that there was not a safe route.

This is just one example of something that I think should specifically be available. There are many places where walking is encouraged and convenient, but it is by no means universal.

    Unifi Express initial observations

I bought a Unifi Express to upgrade my parents in law from an old orbi mesh system that I handed down to them. I'm hoping this will improve their network, and allow me to remotely help them more easily.

After receiving the device, I decided to first test it out in my network to see if it was a viable replacement for my USG-3P and my RPI4-4GB. TL;DR: it is not.

My setup: 1x U6 Lite 1x AC-AP Lite 1x AC-Mesh 1x Nano HD 1x USW-8-60W 1x Lite 8 POE 1x Flex Mini 1x USG-3P 1x Raspberry PI 4-4GB running pihole, Homebridge, controller 1x Raspberry PI zeroW running redundant pihole and critical redundant homebridge items Centurylink Symmetric gigabit fiber

I have around 35 smart home wifi devices and in generally around 55-60 total clients connected to my network.

I loaded a backup from my RPI4 controller to get started.

My initial attempt just failed, as I tried to like set it up while connected to my existing network. I was also just not used to dealing with a UnifiOS console device an

    Ubiquiti stocking issues

Ubiquiti makes some pretty great products, but too many of them are constantly out of stock. I was definitely giving them a pass in 2020, 2021 etc, but this is starting to look like it is now intentional. They are simultaneously out of the express, uxg lite, UDR, and the USG-3P. The only non rack router that is available in the store is the UDM, which they are no longer advertising without searching for it.

I know that the express and uxg lite are brand new, so maybe they can get a pass. The UDR has been out for well over a year. The UDM is just sort of too expensive to be bought without wifi6, and appears to be on the way out.

Further, the U6-lite is also sold out. This just forces people to pay an extra $30 for the U6+ with wifi6 on the 2.4GHz radio, and I'm not really aware of anything that uses wifi6 on 2.4GHz (maybe new mobile phones etc, but they will be defaulting to 5GHz...).

Ubiquiti even hired some B list actors to do an "Apple like" advertisement on their home page for

Unifi Network 8.x for self hosted Raspberry PI

Somewhat recently I had to update to the 64 bit version of Raspbian OS to use Unifi Network 7.x. I had to use the tutorial linked from pimylifeup. Today the apt update switched to the 8.x branch of distribution and it said my architecture of armhf was not supported. To fix it, I just had to edit the file: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/100-ubnt-unifi.list from "arch=armhf" to "arch=arm64". If you were already running the latest 7.x then this should get you up and running. If you are upgrading from something older, visit the linked tutorial to get everything you need to be updated.

  • I just want to comment to push this comment higher. On a PC, the answer is usually Firefox.

  • Absolutely nothing other than voting. Any individual "reducing their plastic use" is just a drop in the ocean. The only meaningful change is through legislation or some economic situation. The only positive outcome of reducing your own plastic use is that warm and fuzzy feeling that you get from believing that you are doing something good.

However, I do not want to discredit that warm and fuzzy feeling. It brings people joy, and I think that is great.

  • I am using it for the flashlight. I hope to get fancy with a shortcut, but I don’t have one picked out yet.

I’m thinking maybe I will try it for my receipt scanning shortcut on a future business trip.

  • I’m also using for the flashlight.

It can only be accessed by the Lock Screen button and the control center widget. The camera can be activated by app, Lock Screen swipe, control center widget, Lock Screen button, search, etc.

I like the idea of using shortcuts to make it more flexible. However mute toggle and camera are not likely something I will pursue. (Why do people need to intermittently mute their phones, isn’t your phone always on mute?)

  • If I didn't get a new phone every year I would likely not load a backup. It takes a bit more time when you just "sign in to icloud" and then go from there, but the phone feels a lot more "new". Loading my old backup on a new phone just has too much familiarity in the way of app arrangement and whatnot.

As with any new phone, ensure all of your core apps work before resetting the old one. Often 2FA and stuff can get you in a catch 22 if you are not careful.

Shortcuts app allowing more background automations

The automation in the screenshot would only prompt me to run the shortcut in iOS 16, but now has the option to run automatically in iOS 17.

FYI, this automation is great for my kids iPad. It seems to automatically connect when I leave the house, but then everything reconnects to WiFi when I get home. Loving it.

  • Great pic! The water looks clear!

  • Mlem is a different app. Both are good, but only Memmy is currently released into the App Store.

  • I don’t think they can, as is. The app itself has the url imbedded into it. The only way they could get it to work is by authenticating from a web page that indicates where it is.

    Cherry Creek Bike Trail Status

    cross-posted from: https://centennialstate.social/post/24475

Wanted to check on the trail status before trying to use it today. This popped to the top of DDG. There is also an interesting chart for the level of the cherry creek. https://waterdata.usgs.gov/monitoring-location/06713500/#parameterCode=00065&period=P7D

Bottom line is that today the trail is only flooded in one place, but muddy in several.

  • I really enjoyed Tao te Ching. I loved the parables and knowing that it was an influential person trying to teach the next king to come how to be more reasonable. My favorite parable from the book is “yield and overcome”.

  • I like this idea. I need to think on it some more though.

Holy hell, I didn't expect this to pop up so quickly.

I would argue you cannot have one with out the other... Will it take more than a day for the DCJ to show up here?

edit: i posted without looking. DCJ is here too.
