  • I think you mean a gift economy or something like that, while cashless society is more commonly used to refer to everything being done by digital payment systems and credit-cards etc. that more often than not are highly privacy invasive.

  • Yeah, the article isn't very good. Reading the Nature paper is seams like they use TEA as a sacrificial donor in this proof of concept, which obviously wouldn't work in an actual rechargeable battery. But the co-polymers their used are apparently similar to those often used in redox-flow batteries, so I could imaging it would be possible to build such a battery, and re-charge it by circulating the liquids through a large solar tray.

  • This seems like something that would really benefit from better language support. I saw the translations folder in the repo, but you should probably get it linked up to a Weblate instance or similar and have people start contribute different languages asap.

  • This is indeed excellent and they are currently working hard on making it a nice alternative to Discord.

Our Lemmy instance has been running it as a supplementary service for quite some time now and it is relatively popular with our members: https://movim.slrpnk.net/

  • Collabora Office works independent of Nextcloud. It can be nicely integrated into the lightweight https://www.filestash.app/ frontend for example.

  • Fixed, thanks.

  • Yeah that server would easily blow past our current aspirational power ceiling of 200W.

A beelink NAS of some sort might be nice for the medium term plans to host a distributed Garage storage cluster, but buying larger drives is quite expensive right now, so the 8TB in double parity we have currently available for that will probably have do do the job for some time.

  • It is possible to donate hardware, see: https://slrpnk.net/post/25310797

We somewhat recently got a nice GPU that way, which has been used already for https://video.f-hub.org/ and the plan is to also use it to accelerate the LibreTranslate service for the upcoming Piefed instance that allows easy translation of posts.

The main issue with old hardware donations is usually the power demand. Since we run our servers mainly off a solar PV system we need to keep overall power demand in check.

  • I recently ended up replacing OnlyOffice with Collabora Office (Libreoffice based). While architecturally less efficient that OnlyOffice in theory, for my usecase where I rarely check some documents in Filestash it actually ended up using less server resources when idle than OnlyOffice (to my surprise).

UI wise they is no big difference IMHO, but docx etc. compatibility is slightly worse.

  • I added my (basically unused) alternative account on another Lemmy instance to my profile now.

I personally would rather put effort into making outages less likely than operating another chat on an external system, but feel free to make an unofficial channel of some sort. I can add it to the many chat bridges that f-hub.org runs so that things stay connected somehow.

  • what’s the “alternative f-hub link” to donate exclusively to slrpnk ?

This refers to: https://contribute.f-hub.org/ where you can select the different services hosted by f-hub.org to donate to. Practically there isn't a huge difference right now, but it might allow better prioritization of donated funds in the future and also doesn't depend on an external service like LiberaPay.

when you say technically help those community transition to their own instance, it means that they will no longer be part of slrpnk even though they are solarpunk oriented ? Would that make them less accessible ?

They would be of course accessible through federation like other Lemmy/Piefed instances and we would make sure their communities are accessible from the SLRPNK instance.

The idea is really to decentralize efforts and not let a single instance (like ours) grow too big.

  • Mediawiki is a pain yes. I personally like Dokuwiki (see it in action here: https://wiki.slrpnk.net/ ) and Bookstack is also not bad (see it in action here: https://wiki.f-hub.org/ ), but it is a bit restrictive in regards to structure and access rights for other users.
