I'm with ya. I was shocked to learn that there are people who don't use it. Keyboard typing with your thumbs feels like Blackberry energy.
Swipe typing is the cursive of smartphones. I love it, it's so much faster than regular typing (for me at least). I didn't realize how uncommon it is until several people commented on me using it.
There are people who don't have an inner monologue, they just think in abstraction. I have a friend who is like this. She tried to explain it to me and I just couldn't even comprehend what a paradigm shift it is from how I thought all brains at a basic level worked.
It's like when I learned that some people actually see images when they "picture something in your mind's eye." Had no idea that was literal.
I think this is finally being corrected, but for decades kids have been taught "whole word reading" rather than phonics. The basic idea is that instead of learning how to sound out words, they should look at the first letter and guess what they think the word might be based on context/pictures. The proponents of this method claim kids will memorize words as "whole words" and eventually be able to read.
So, they can't actually read. But they know how to look like they can read.
When you can't read it's not enjoyable, so you read less. When you read less you come across fewer words, which you don't really know how to decode anyway because you were never taught.
Anyway these kids are now adults, and even the ones who are smart still struggle with spelling and reading.
Check out the podcast Sold a Story, really interesting investigation on this topic.
Hard agree on Pepsi is better than Coke
I think they mean outed as queer, not outed as queerphobic. Like doing queerphobic shit and someone knows you're queer and in denial or using it to try to lock your closet door, they think those people should be outed as such.
If someone is queerphobic but straight, what are you outing them as?
At least that's how I understood the comment.
Not if you sort by controversial
Yeah, a really surprising effect of finally getting diagnosed with ADHD and starting meds is that I'm actually able to emotionally regulate and self-soothe. A lifetime of depression and anxiety could have been managed so much more easily.
Also I find it odd that people say "ADHD is over diagnosed" but everyone I know that has an ADHD diagnosis had to FIGHT to even be screened for it. I think there's definitely more self-diagnosis than there used to be and a decent amount of that is bullshit, but I don't think it's particularly easy to get an official ADHD diagnosis.
Yeah at the very least, they could easily make it a requirement to pass a written test at every renewal. Hell, they could do it as an online test you can do it home before you come in, I don't even care if people "cheat." Make it open book. Then at least people would have to flip through the book every few years which is better than nothing.
I agree about people not caring about anyone else, and I think it's gotten worse since covid.
Everyone should have to retake the driving test (both written and practical) every five years. And if you don't pass on the first try or are in a crash where you are found at fault, it should be bumped up to every year for the following five years.
People drive dangerously because they've forgotten rules, or rules have changed, or they've had a physical or cognitive decline. And yet we're like "yep, you took a test once decades ago, good to go."
Dangerous driving kills so many people.
Just made me feel elderly is all
This post just rocketed me into menopause
Might have trouble finding skilled artists who are okay with the pay, though
Semi-related, you can buy anything at an Olive Garden. Like, anything. Art off the wall, the chair you're sitting in, the cheese grater. They will sell it to you if you ask.
Be the content you want to see in the world.

What are your favorite meals to bring to new parents for spring and summer babies?
Things like frozen lasagna and stew are classics for new parents, but not exactly the greatest light fare. What are your faves that:

It is okay to be a dweeb. You can just be a dweeb and do dweeb stuff, it is fine. The trouble comes in when you are a dweeb at heart, and decide you need to put on a big imitation of something else, and commit to it so hard that it starts to cause a rift deep within you. I think that is part of what is going on with Elon and why he has gone so hard into this strange darkness.
He never recovered from being pushed out of the San Francisco baby fur scene and we are all paying for it
Idk this doesn't feel like a scam. You paid for something, they sent it, they said "you want more? More money please." Did you want more for free? I don't get it.
Have you or someone you know ever fallen for a scam? What happened?
What apps have you tried to "de-google" yourself?
Right now a lot of us are trying to divest and diversify from having our entire lives on Google both because of the way Google spends its money and the long-standing privacy concerns seeming a bit more scary now.
What services have you switched to and what has your experience been? What do you like, what don't you like, would you recommend them?
