  • LingQ is Canadian; heard about it on c/buyEuropean community.

Unfortunately the app is closed source and only on playstore, so won't use that on my main profile. Could install it on my sandboxed "google" profile, but then I'd be much less likely to just quickly do some learning.

The web functionality is pretty broken on both Firefox mobile (especially) and vanadium.

I get a very uber-capitalist, biz-bro vibe from the guy running it, and the site in general. So I don't think I'll be paying a subcription for premium. The free tier only gives 20 "LingQs" which if you read the founders methodology, is the whole basis of his learning method, so you NEED unlimited lingQs which is a hefty monthly sub. 🤢

Not sure if I believe their claims of how effective their method is or if they're just looking to make a quick buck.

Sidenote: If anyone wants to try the OP's question on hard mode, I'd be interested in any Canadian (notUS) opensource language apps.

  • Molly-FOSS is the fully FOSS, hardened fork of Signal that is available on Fdroid via their repo.

Here's a feature comparison on their github between Signal, Molly, and Molly-FOSS. Basically, the stock signal app relies on some google services, Molly-FOSS does not.

  • FWIW I had my reservations about the "source first" licence grayjay uses as well, but I'm impressed by the FUTO org's principles, how they respond to bugs, how fast fixes and improvements come, amount of sponsoring other FOSS projects they do, etc. Plus Rossman's work for R2R and other generally good ethical behaviour. So I believe their reasoning when they say its necessary.

I ended up purchasing the licence and am happy with that decision. I just look at it as a donation to support the development, and the fight against big tech which would have happened if it was FOSS too in my case.

Also the best/only source available app to access nebula.tv content AFAIK 🤷‍♂️

  • I shopped used before I got my pixel 8 (and graphene). People wanted more money on marketplace for a used pixel 7 128gb than a brand new pixel 8 256GB costs on contract. AS LONG AS YOU UNDERSTAND THE CONTRACTS, you can take advantage of the deals.

Here's the deal I got. Similar deals throughout the year on current models, just wait for the price to drop and snag it.

Koodo BF 2023 Deal (wait for current model to be <$10/month IMO, seems fairly common.) I went thru a best buy mobile kiosk to also get the $100 GC.

    • Pixel 8 256GB (no expansion so unless you like running out of space for apps and stuff don't get a 128GB in 2025 ppl) - $6/month for 2 years = 6*24= $144
    • Buyout amount after 2 years to keep the phone= $240
    • Plan amount stayed the same from $60/month for 50GB to $60/month for $120GB CAN/US, so zero increase in cost
    • Received $100 Best buy gift card
    • Received free pixel buds.

Total cost for phone over 2 years = $388. Try and find a used pixel for that cheap 🤷‍♂️ obv the bonus items are usually just around BF, but the cost is still cheaper than buying outright or used, and you get a 0% interest loan on the $344 cost for 2 years, if you needed it.

    Toilet Paper (House) Brands

Many of CO-OP's house brand products including their toilet paper and paper towels are Made in Canada.

Western Family paper products seem to be as well, although I prefer co-op gold for this application.

Not sure if any other house brands are as well? FRANK stuff at Canadiantire is good quality but I don't have any to check the place of manufacture.

    Canadian Author Megathread?

Who are some of your favourite Canadian authors? Remember to share the author's website if available, instead of an Amazon link. Your local library may have a lot of Canadian books too!

I saw a Silverwing book by Kenneth Oppel at a clearance sale and that took me on a nostalgia train. Looked him up and I didn't realize he's quite a prolific Canadian author!

Not sure if its all YA/easy reading, but that's what I grew up with. Both the Silverwing series and Airborn are top notch for that sorta thing and still hold up well for a re-read occassionally.

    Non-USA Ukulele Brands

I suppose I should have expected most of the major brands to be USA based since Hawaii was colonized afterall.

Here's a list of Non-USA owned brands that I found in a preliminary search.

    • Ibanez
      • Country of Manufacture: I spy Made in China on all 3 uke models
      • Country of Ownership: Japan
    • Aria
      • Country of Manufacture: China and Indonesia, Japan for platinum line (no ukes)

Tim Hortons Hasn't Been Canadian-Owned For A Long Time

    Just a little reminder.

Pisses me off to no end that they use the Canadian identity for marketing when they sold out decades ago.

Also their coffee and food has been shit for a long time too, coincidence? I think not.

Egli Farm - Wool and Sheepskin Products

I just wanted to shout out Egli Farm. I found them while doing my Christmas shopping this year and everything my partner and I have gotten has been great quality at fair prices. The sheepskin bucket hat was a big hit at Christmas since it enables year round bucket-hattery in Canada lol

They have hundreds of Made in Canada wool and sheepskin products including clothing, footwear, homegoods, raw wool and sheepskin supplies, etc. Seems like they contract some of the more processing-intense type products out to Stanfields but they're in Canada too 🤙

    Family-owned in Ontario since 1952!

P.S. if you end up ordering something leave a note on the order suggesting they switch to a .ca TLD so its easier for people tell they're Canadian

    Plz Rec Me Spooky Podcasts

I'm running out of spooky stories. Help me out, what are some of your favourite spooky story podcasts?

I like narrative story style podcasts and dislike the style where there are multiple people bantering off-topic before discussing a spooky topic.
