  • Short article.

Putin told Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, during a meeting in St Petersburg earlier this month that Moscow could relinquish its claims to areas of four partly occupied Ukrainian regions that remain under Kyiv’s control, the report said citing three people familiar with the talks.

So wait, Putin is willing to make a deal with Trump in which he cedes invaded land that he doesn't actually control?

  • Horror

  • Hah, yeah I got a Debian floppy and then tried to install packages over DSL. Somehow it didn't immediately kill my interest in Linux, eventually ran OpenBSD as my server for a while.

  • "And he paid for, at least in part, a drone and explosives to be used as a weapon of mass destruction to commit an attack," investigators said in the federal affidavit.

What's "mass" about one drone? Is this just language to bring different legalities to bear?

  • Looks nice! Sounds like a very fun process too.

Is one side larger than the other, or is that a trick of perspective / lens distortion?

How did you integrate the charger, and where's the power cord? I've thought of doing something similar but not tried to design it.

Jewish students chained themselves to gates at Columbia University Wednesday in support of Mahmoud Khalil, the former Columbia student protest leader now in an ICE jail in Louisiana. On March 8th, federal agents detained Khalil at his university-owned apartment building, even though he’s a legal permanent resident of the United States. They revoked his green card.

  • Thanks. Pleasantly surprised that there are not too many ALPRs nearby me according to deflock.me. I was thinking, though, what about privately owned ALPRs to track known enforcement vehicles. I didn't know what laws come into play there (or what unequal enforcement). The photos on the article do look high quality though, definitely beyond a Pi camera board pointed out a window. OTOH tagging "purple bumper sticker" or "bike rack" honestly doesn't sound that far beyond OpenCV or AI tools these days.

Challah bake prepared in new proving cabinet

I'm not sure if it's a tad dry, or if that's just how challah works, this is only my second attempt. Still tasty though!

I used the America's Test Kitchen recipe which calls for an internal temperature of 195F after 35-40 minutes, but I got to about 210F at 30 minutes.

    Cabinet details cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/27518175

Proving box cabinet with room for bowls or two baking sheets, and temp/humidity tracking

Plywood for the main box (3/4" sides, 1/4" back, rabbet and dado joints). Cut the door 1" too narrow so I added a handle from cedar scrap. Shelves and sheet pan brackets are reclaimed bed slats, planed. Window hole is routed with plexiglass insert, my first time doing any significant router work.

    First bake came out well:

The brackets for the baking sheet have a cutout to accommodate two bowls. My goal was either two bowls or two baking sheets.

An obvious improvement would be to install an under-counter outlet so the cord is less prominent

Harbinger just builds the chassis. Everything on top comes from somewhere else.

"Most medium-duty vehicles are built by one company building the chassis [and] another company installing the body," Weicker said. "So this made the perfect sense for our first product because we're going to be focused almost entirely on the differentiated aspects. We don't have to deal with the high capital investments for body in white, paint shop, [and] a lot of the things that have cost EV startups lots of money just to get to a table-stakes position with their incoming competitors."

"Where we're pricing the vehicles, we need that 45 W if we want to undercut diesel, and that's what we're doing," Harris said. "With 45 W, we can undercut the typical diesel vehicle by a few thousand dollars."

But even if that credit goes away under the current administration, Harbinger has some price flexibility to remain competitive, he added.

That's doubly true if you factor in operating costs. Harris says the averag

First Challah. America's Test Kitchen recipe. Sub-floor heating for proving in a pinch.

Very pleased with the result. With olive oil I have no complains, plain it may be a touch dry.

The America's Test Kitchen recipe has you heat some flour + water to make the starch absorb more water, in an effort to have a higher hydration dough without sacrificing workability; and the dough was very easy to work with while producing nice light crumb.

Fresh out of the oven (egg white wash + sesame seeds):

I made it staying in an AirBnB. I was trying to figure out where to prove the loaves, lacking my usual options, but the house has sub-floor heating in the entryway. Worked great, and nobody stepped on the loaves!

Playing Dragonsweeper because of Ars' article. Did I have any way out of this without guessing?

Ars called it their favorite of 2025 so far, and I'm enjoying it. Adds a nice if minor level of resource (health) management on top of regular Minesweeper. Free to play online.

    Advice on sharpening hole saw?

The teeth feel much catchier after filing them with a triangular jeweler's saw (left half is done), but it still takes a minute of rocking the but back and forth to get through 3/4" plywood.

Glad for advice on getting mitered corners more precise, I ended up with little gaps using both a table saw crosscut sled and miter saw. I think part of the issue is holding the small pieces of wood totally still.

Wood analog VRx mount for Walksnail Goggles X

I don't have a 3D printer, but I have a wood shop, so I carved a mount for my analog adapter board + TBS Fusion to clip onto my Walksnail Goggles X strap. Works well so far!

It would have been easier to drill the holes for the side where the cords plug in before cutting out the interior. I ended up finishing the profile with a jigsaw, just going very slowly to avoid splitting off the side.

Today, Rivian announced that it is opening up the Rivian Adventure Network of fast chargers to drivers of all other makes of electric vehicles, beginning with its location in Joshua Tree, California. The Joshua Tree Charging Outpost, which has 12 DC fast chargers, is now accessible to any EV with a CCS1 charging port, as well as any Tesla or EV equipped with a native NACS (J3400) port using an adapter. A planned hardware upgrade in the future will add native NACS cables. (Rivian is switching the plugs on its own EVs from CCS1 to NACS in 2025.)

Rivian notes that the new chargers—which are rated at 900 V, meet the design and siting requirements set out under the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure and the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure programs created by US President Joe Biden to disburse federal money to states to build out EV charging infrastructure in the US. By opening up to non-Rivian EVs, the network becomes eligible to apply for funding under those programs.

    Worth restoring this step stool?

Found it on the curb, and I liked the design. Looks like solid wood, but the joints are all coming apart and look tricky to reinforce. Would you bother?

Getting the hang of sharpening & setting up my inherited plane

It took lots of repetition honing, stropping, going through setup, realizing the chip breaker was right on the edge of the blade, repeat, new error. The first picture is progress: small and crunchy, long and crinkley, long and papery.

Sharpening using Atoma 400/600/1200 diamond plates + a strop I had around. I found Wood By Wright's setup video helpful and have been enjoying Rex Kreuger's videos on sharpening and other things.

I worked so hard for these shavings, surely there's something fun to do with them.

Box joint jig (no dado) and demo box

I made a box joint jig following [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyJof__nTR4](Woodfather's video). It's a nice simple/flexible design for those of us without a dado stack.

First try was very sloppy, but once I adjusted the key width and got my clamps set up better the fit is great. The scraps I had around were bed slats off the curb, which were very cupped. But they actually turned out pretty nicely (after plenty of cleanup).
