  • Did Sagan say that in writing? I know he wrote a few things about his experiences with pot, but those were informal, anecdotal writings, and this sounds much more formal, almost like a public statement meant for publication, or a speech.

  • Back in the early 00s, I had the supreme pleasure of discovering Alec Guinness as George Smiley in the BBC's miniseries masterpiece Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy from 1979, then the sequel and conclusion three years later, Smiley's People, not as transcendent but then again, how could it equal, let alone surpass, perfection.

Around 2010, my first reaction upon hearing of a remake was of complete disdain - "here is an already perfect miniseries, what is it with this incessant compulsion to remake everything?"
So I didn't watch the Gary Oldman movie until a couple of years after it came out, it was playing on TV and decided to give it a try.

To my utter astonishment, I realized I was watching what was to become my favorite film of the entire decade. What an achievement!
Now I love the film and the miniseries equally, as separate mountaintops.

  • The difference between a shithead like this, and any and all sane people, is that sane people could see this unnecessary shitstorm approaching from afar, while these stunted minds only seem to be able to see things only after things smack then in the face.
Fuck him, all his ilk and the greedy, myopic, ignorant goddamned boat they rode one.

  • Not just fascists, also those who empower fascists by sitting on their lazy ignorant smug asses on Election Day, bOtH pArTiEs ArE tHe SaMe LoL aMiRiTe, who want some sort of collapse to happen... because they fancy themselves at the top of their imagined new "purity" food chain, I mean... look at their purity! Aren't they so special and so above it all?

They read things! On the internet! Wow!
They reject anything that doesn't fit their narrative. They LOVE having their hollow ego massaged in circlejerks and by bad-faith actors.

God forbid anything less than perfect and pure crosses their medieval path, lest they feel offended and... oh yeah, they do nothing. Which is why we're in this goddamned mess in the first place. They allowed racist, misogynistic fascism to take firm root, good luck weeding it out now.

  • bOtH pArTiEs ArE tHe SaMe LoL aMiRiTe... i'M sUcH aN aNaRcHiSt HyUcK hYuCk HyUcK!!!

It's like these mentally lazy ignorant people look all around themselves, see how the horizon is basically at the same distance all around them, therefore conclude that they must be the center of the universe, then sprinkle in a few fashionable internet soundbites and catchphrases to "make themselves sound interesting" and "with it".

  • It's narcissism.
"Look at me! I am at the center of the end of time!"

Exactly like the evangelical wingnuts with their "I am living n the last generation and the rapture is imminent yadda yadda yadda... I'm special!"

Regarding the arrow of time, is there any correlation or study between it and music? As in: it sounds "right" when played in one direction, but "weird" when played backwards.

If the universe was stationary (not expanding), how far away was the Cosmic Microwave Background (as we detect it today) when it was emitted?

If I place a prism on a ray of sunlight in a dark room as Newton did, but projected onto modern sensors, can it register microwaves and radio photons beyond the infrared? More in text inside...

If the answer is YES, a related follow-up question: if each visible color of the spectrum were to measure a centimeter in width, how far would I have to move the sensor from the red to detect the change from infrared to microwave, then to radio?

In the knowledge that Sir William Herschel discovered infrared by repeating Newton's experiment, but with a thermometer to measure the temperature of each component of the spectrum, and after placing the thermometer a bit to the side of the red light, in darkness, noticed quite by accident that the device would still register heat, therefore an invisible yet very real component of light was there, warming the thermometer.

Does anyone here know of a website or video, or at least sound files, of LIGO's black hole (or neutron star) chirps in slow and ultraslow playback speed?

Now I'm just being the curious layman here, but a Google/YouTube search proved fruitless.

Why is it that in every movie podcast, when they happen to mention actor RALPH Fiennes, always say RAY Fiennes?

It's one of those pet peeves that rub me the wrong way, and they all seem to do it, whether it's anywhere around The Ringer network, or the Earwolf network, or the Blank Check podcast to name a few, they always say "Ray" instead of "Ralph".

The man's real full name is Ralph Nathaniel Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes, quite a fancy mouthful, but not even a hint of "Ray" or "Raymond" in there. Did everyone in the podcasting world decide to pronounce his name wrong on purpose?

In particle decay, is there a difference when they say "average lifetime" vs "half life"? Also: in the Large Hadron Collider, how long does a particle collision event (or experiment) last?

What food or item/brand did you use to love, but isn't around anymore?

Me first: in the early 80s, I remember the Vons supermarket chain had their own brand of sour cream dip for potato chips, one flavor that people I know loved was fresh pismo clam, it still had chunks of clam meat in there. One day it got yanked from the shelves and I've never seen it again.

More recently, about a decade ago, Trader Joe's carried cheddar-and-horseradish potato chips, then one day they were gone.

I would love... LOVE... to dip those horseradish chips into that clam dip... sigh.

Does anyone else see an alleged old painting or black-and-white photo you've never seen before, are unsure if it's legit or a recent fake created with AI?

For example, places like HistoryPorn have some bizarre pictures of weird inventions or WWII experimental weapons.

How come I'm only just now coming across them? Why didn't we see them five or ten years ago, even in specialized forums and subreddits?

Places like ArtPorn or TraditionalArt are a trickier proposition. Here my lack of knowledge is vast, but I've really loved the history of painting for over two decades now, and have recently kept coming across a lot of 18th-to-20th century paintings and painters I've never heard of before; some of these are excellent, I should have known about them... I think. But like I say, there's more that I don't know than what I do.
If they are real and not recent AI creations, where are the original and who is digitizing and/or publishing so many of them all of a sudden in the past year?
