  • Well there actually is a problem this can help solve. Malware. There are other concerns that are bigger motivators for Google, but the ability to lock shit down can help control security issues.

    Most people can’t get the software they run on their devices. The idea of “you can trust me, bro” is fucking dumb, even in the open-source world. This helps nerf this for the stupid people who buy this shit. It’s a priority because there are more stupid people willing to buy a product and put up with its bullshit than there are smart people willing to put in the effort themselves.

    But also money.

    I do have to wonder if everyone stopped paying federal taxes how that would fix over Trump. Like, would he admit he’s powerless against the numerous? Would he just lie and pretend the money is there? Would he just not pay the bills like he has historically done?

    It’s fun to imagine what he would do facing adversity.

  • “A lot of people are saying” is Trumps version of Christians saying “God says I’m right.” With Christians, they are the only ones who get to speak for God, who agrees with them on everything, and anyone saying otherwise is lying. With Trump, the “lot of people” are never people you can directly question or challenge. He’s making it up, saying he has a consensus but cant prove it.

    A lot of people are saying Luigi Mangione did a horrible thing for the best fucking reason and was totally justified in doing so.

    A lot of people want a dictator….yea, not quite as believable.

  • Europe is already falling. This was part of a coordinated effort. The right did stupid shit to erode the US, hostile foreign powers hijacked the Republican Party using Trump once they had weakened the US enough, and this destabilized the entire western world due to their reliance on the US.

    The republicans dumbly did exactly what their enemies wanted. And they still don’t even realize they are being used yet.

  • Systemd is a very good chunk of code. It does the thing and it does it well. Nobody is arguing that systemd does a bad job at this point.

    The problem is systemd does a LOT of things that used to be individual jobs handled by separate things. This is a potential security problem as it makes systemd a fantastic target. It’s in charge of so many things that if you pwn systemd, you can get that system to do anything you want.

    Another concern are the ties to red hat. Red hat is not your friend. They are not to be trusted. Especially not right now. Remember who owns them, IBM, were quite friendly with the Nazis before and are looking like they are totally fine with being friendly with them again.

    That last one is more of a tinfoil hat concern than a technical one, but at this point the tinfoil crowd have been proven right more often than wrong so it’s something to consider.

  • I can see apps becoming less important over time. PWAs were basically what Apple originally planed for the smartphone anyway and now they are capable of damn near anything you would want an app to do. No store to rely on. No updates to install. No storage space being eaten into. The browser engine functions as a layer of abstraction between the scary untrusted app and your own OS. It’s kinda perfect.
