• Are there any launchers that have Nova's 2 best features?

1. Swipe-to-open folders (with tap to open the first item in the folder)
2. Set any icon you want as an app icon?

I've tried Lawnchair and it was missing these 2 features. I will switch to any launcher that supports these!

• I didn't read Solrize's comment as saying "There shouldn't be paywalls," just asking the very legitimate question as to how they will interact with federation.

Interestingly, 404 just solved something kinda related: they developed a way for subscribers to get a custom RSS feed address, so they can access paywalled articles directly in their RSS reader. TMK, they are the first publication to do this. I imagine they would do something similar for federation. (I believe that if any of the custom RSS feeds show huge traffic numbers, 404 shuts it down, but I'm not sure)

how we get drivers on board

I genuinely believe that car owners could be tricked into supporting FuckCars policies by a very crafty politician/campaign. It would work like this:

1. Proclaim your love of cars. Loudly. "I want to make our city the best city in the world for drivers!"
2. "What are the biggest problems drivers face today? Traffic and parking! Therefore... We need to open up roads and parking spaces..."
3. "And that's why we're going to cap the number of cars that can enter downtown. With increased public transit, we can free up these roads for drivers! That way: more parking, less traffic, a better life for drivers"

Do the same thing for bikes:

1. "These bikers want to share the road, but studies have shown that whether you use sharrows, plastic bollards, it doesn't matter: people still get hurt.
2. And here's the thing: when a car hits a cyclist, it's bad for everyone, including the driver. Nobody wants to hit

Why does a prospective employer need my address?

This happens a lot: I apply for a job and they ask for my complete address. Why? I would understand if they just want to know what city/town I'm in: That has bearing on how easily I can get to the office.

But why do they need to know my street address?

The only thing I can think: Indeed/LinkedIn/take-your-pick is building a profile of me based on this info, using my street as a proxy for my income, credit score, or, ultimately, for my social class.

From now on, when they ask me, I'm just going to put a rich person's address. For this one I used a Brooklyn townhouse where Maggie Gyllenhaal and one of the Saarsgaards lives.

Weird feed behavior

I just joined lemm.ee from lemmy.world. I was drawn to lemm.ee bc it federates with all the right instances.

But my feed is behaving oddly. (I view Lemmy through the Eternity app on Android.)

• I'm seeing posts from communities I haven't subscribed to, even when I view my "Subscribed" feed
• I get a weird error when I try to comment on some posts (in [email protected], most recently)

These issues didn't happen previously. Anyone know how to fix?

Is there a gallery app for Lemmy? Like Scrolldit?

I'm looking for a way to pull images from my Lemmy feed and display them on desktop tiles, similar to Scrolldit. Ideally, the images would refresh every so often.

Does anything like this exist?

• I'm sorry, I'm having difficulty following your point.

That's a really, really crap argument that is permissive of all kinds of cultural genocide.

Isn't it the opposite? He's arguing that work of cultural importance should NOT be in private hands. You might say, "Who gets to determine what's culturally significant? And why do we trust governments to do a better job than private collectors?" Those are fair questions, I think, but then I get lost again:

A LOT of artwork is in private collections that by no right should be.

Right, that's what he's arguing too.

I live in country that used to "legally" buy and sell people.

Ok, so... You acknowledge that just because it's legal to trade in something, doesn't mean that it's moral or ethical. So is that also true of culturally-significant artwork?

See why I'm confused as to your argument?

• TBH I don't think we have to read these posts as shaming the driver of these cars, necessarily. We could read them as indictments of all the choices we've made as a society that result in poor transit options & large vehicles.

Choices like:

All of these are worthy of critique and fair targets

FM Radio jamming?

Can you jam an FM radio signal with a FZ?

Let's say, hypothetically, there's a guy who parks on your street once a week and -- for some reason that no one understands and he refuses to explain -- he absolutely BLASTS a butt rock radio station from his car speakers for 20 minutes at a time, so loud that it bounces off all the buildings on your narrow street and it sounds like it's coming from every single window. And when you go out and say, "Hey dude, I'm taking a call for work, could you not do that here? Or anywhere, really?" he smirks and looks at you like you're the one acting crazy.

Again, this is a hypothetical.

But in this hypothetical situation, could you use a FZ to jam his car radio? How? (I know that many people might call the police/311 and ask them to do something about this. That is not how I want to do this.)

Thank you for indulging this completely made up scenario.

• Reading more about this now... Last October it was reported that there's 500 completed Metacycles sitting in a Chinese factory. There's even a pic!

Are they still there? Because I'll go to China right now and buy one for $2500 cash.

Electric motorcycles for two passengers?

I'm looking for an EV motorcycle that can support 2 passengers. Anyone know of any?

I've read that the Sondors Metacycle can fit 2. But that's all I've found. Seating on the Zero FX is said to be tight, and other bikes seem specifically designed to cap at 1 passenger. Ex: the Johammer or the Tarform

Maybe you could fit 2 on the Land Moto District? But any owners in here know what that drops the range to?

Thanks all

Issues w/ fullscreen since last update

I'm having an issue w/ fullscreen videos since the last update (22 days ago). My computer will enter Suspend mode, even if I make a video fullscreen. This happens when I'm watching Netflix, YouTube, or any other fullscreen video.

This is unusual; In the past, if I made a video fullscreen in Firefox, my computer would stay awake.

I'm wondering if this is related to a bug fix in the latest release: Bug 1853896, which addresses a previous bug in fullscreen video.

• Is there a way that I can fix this?
• Or, if not, can I roll Firefox back to an earlier version?

I'm running Firefox 120.0.1 (64 bit) on Linux Lite 5.6 My hardware is an old HP Chromebox connected to a display via HDMI.

Thank you Lemmy folks!

Do electric motorcycles make artificial noise?

I'm interested in getting an electric motorcycle, but something I've been wondering:

ICE motorcycles can be loud, and that can act as a safety feature, especially when lane splitting. I'm thinking about Los Angeles, where motorcycles regularly weave through bumper-to-bumper car traffic. The noise they make helps prevent riders from getting accidentally doored.

Do electric motorcycles have any kind of artificial noise maker to achieve the same thing? Or does anyone sell a device that does this?

Note that I'm not talking about generic speakers, because

1. I don't want to have to blast music all the time just for safety, and
2. most speaker kits are pointed BACK at the driver, not FORWARD towards traffic.

Anyone know the answer?

Minimalist email client for desktop?

I'm looking for a FOSS email client for desktop. (Windows and MacOS, for now.)

Using Airmail or Mailbird as references, I'm looking for a client with some of these features:

• A clean, minimalist design
• A left-side toolbar as a narrow band, icons only.
• Bonus points if it can schedule an email to send later.

I'm familiar with Thunderbird and there's a lot to like there, but design-wise, it's pretty cluttered, IMHO.

Does anyone know of a FOSS desktop email client that looks clean? -OR- Is there a way to change Thunderbird's layout so it looks/functions more like Airmail or Mailbird?

Thank you!

How to use disappearing sidebar with pinned tabs?

I'm a big user of Tree Style Tabs. And I LOVE using pinned tabs.

Recently, I modified my CSS so that my sidebar will shrink/expand on hover. I really like getting this screen real estate back.

But there's a problem: My pinned tabs keep moving every time the sidebar changes width, causing the entire tab tree to slide up. (GIF) This means I have to hover, wait for the tabs, find the one I want, and finally click on it, rather than - y'know- just mousing over there and clicking.

Is there any way to change this, such that my pinned tabs stay in the "wide" configuration, and are just "revealed" when the sidebar expands?

Thanks Lemmy folks!

Read-it-later apps that support page-turning?

I read a lot of articles. In the past, I've used Pocket to access articles on all my devices.

I prefer to read on my e-ink tablet, where scrolling is a pain. So I need a read-it-later app that supports page-turning, the same way an e-book does.

Pocket used to have this feature, but they killed it with their most recent update.

Wallabag has this feature, but I find the Wallabag fonts ugly and unreadable.

Omnivore does not appear to have this feature.

Does anyone use a read-it-later app that supports page-turning?

Thank you!

Best way to auto-import events into Google Calendar?

The goal: See upcoming events from various NYC venues in one place, possibly my Google Calendar

The problem: Bars and venues all use different sites and apps to manage their event calendars, forcing me to check each venue's website individually. It sucks!

My best guess at a solution: Find a way to convert the venue's websites/calendars to RSS, then use IFTTT to convert the RSS feeds to Google Calendar entries.

1. Is that the correct solution?
2. Does anyone know the best way to convert these sites to RSS?

Here are the calendars that I need to convert:

Tips for converting an academic paper (in PDF) to epub?

I frequently use Calibre to convert academic papers from PDF to epub, so I can read them on my tablet. But the conversion often results in weird formatting artifacts.

I'm aware that in the Conversion tool, there's a Search & Replace section, where I can list various expressions that will help me remove things like page numbers. This post has some helpful expressions for that. For example:

\d+
\n|\d+\w
\n|\w\d+
\n

Does anyone have a list of more expressions that they use when converting academic papers from PDF to epub? Especially any good expressions for handling footnotes?? I would love to get a bunch together, save them, and then simply load them every time I have to do this.

Thanks all!
