Stepping down as head mod of 196

Truth be told, this doesn't change much, but I'd still like to make it official.

As of about 17 days ago, I have stepped down as the head mod of 196 on both this platform and lemmy.world. I will be yielding that title to the much more qualified Qaz, who's been functionally in charge for quite a while now.

Despite what you may think, I make this choice really only for one reason: I don't have nearly enough spare time in my life to be consistently available enough to be head mod.

What does this change/what does this mean?

To be honest, pretty much nothing for all of you. I've barely been available for the past however many months it's been, and in that time the community has been run exclusively by Qaz and the rest of the team.
All that you'll see changed is that Qaz will at times be the one that makes an announcement, and Qaz is now the only person that can make moderatorial decisions (bans, ect) without checking with the rest of the team (a power reserved for

  • I wouldn't say so. Beleive it or not, multiple similar communities can exist without issue

  • aha ok. That's alright. I thought it was "assigned male at birth," but I'm glad it's just an anti-mod post

  • well, I have a pretty good sense of the first two. The third one however, has stumped me. Not sure what AMAB is supposed to mean in relation to this all.

  • this post is over two years old. We edit it whenever we update the rules

  • would you mind explaining what this title+image+caption is supposed to mean? I'm not sure I understand

  • the bird is a little difficult to see because I'm pretty sure they were slowly adding more opacity to Armenian Cory

  • I mean with the quality of amd's CPUs and gpus nowadays you're really comparing excellent to even more excellent

  • not really. it had existed for a couple weeks unmoderated. no banner, icon, whatever

  • these rules have been our rules for over two years, with minimal changes. the request to add rule to your title has been there the whole time.

  • my Asus laptop required me to edit a file in the EFI partition to change the fan mode. not only that, half of the function keys didn't work on Linux and the back light didn't work at all. also, the audio didn't work

What’s Going On With 196, Or, Why We Did What We Did

TL;DR: We tried to move the community because of moderatorial concerns, but fumbled how we went about doing so.

    First and Foremost:

We'd like to formally apologize for springing this on you all out of nowhere, and for taking so long to respond to the backlash. With retrospect, we understand that we should have notified you all beforehand to create an opportunity to give us feedback. We understand that a lot of respect and trust was lost, and we expect it'll take a lot of work and a lot of time before we can earn it back, but we would be grateful if y’all gave us that chance.

    What happened, and why?

The primary issue that incited this was because we don't fully agree with the admin's moderation policies. By and large they do a great job and align with us on mod actions, but there have been several cases where we strongly disagreed, and our choices were overruled.

For example, 2 months ago, Kolanaki reached out to us via email and said they were banned from 196 for “pla

    WE ARE MOVING TO LEMMY.WORLD!!

It is my pleasure to announce that effective immediately, we are transferring our community to Lemmy.world! This has been a few months in the making, so my entire mod team is already on board.
    FAQ:
    Why?
That's a complicated question with a long answer! The primary reason is moderatorial and ideologial differences between my team and Ada's excellent team of admins. We are on good terms with Ada and her team, and have gotten her consent to do this. In addition to this, the fact that a large portion of instances do not federate with lemmy.blahaj.zone has caused our reach to be reduced, with many communities creating their own 196es.
    How does this work?
Currently, as there is not an easy way to transfer an entire community (trust me, we checked), so we are locking the community as mod-only, and moving our focus to the 196 on lemmy.world. For you guys, functionally nothing has changed.
    What about the posts?
    Well, we

    WE ARE MOVING TO LEMMY.WORLD!!

edit: As I'm seeing a lot of worry about the impact this will/could have on the community, please be assured we have the same mod team, and will be holding the community to the same standards. the same things that were always allowed will continue to be allowed and the same things that got things removed before will continue to get things removed before. Lemmy.world admins have agreed to allow us to run our community on our terms.

Despite everything, if you're in the US, you should still vote

When given a choice between a millitary industrial neoliberal with a rainbow voting base and a fascist who is one elon musk golf session away from banning HRT, the best option is certainly not to refuse to play out of protest

WE NEED MODS: IF YOU WANT IT, COME GET IT

With the constant growth of our mod team and the demanding nature of actually having lives outside of niche internet communities, Ada and I have come to the decision that the mod team once again needs to expand.
Applications work the same way they did the last two mod calls:
Post a brief write-up on yourself and why you think we should give you moderator status, as well as a link to at least one other social media account. (reddit, twitter, instagram, facebook, mastodon, tumblr, bluesky are all accepted.) If you don't want your alts to be public, you can send them as a private DM to me. Applications don't have a fixed close date, but we're looking for at least four new mods in multiple time zones.

I will be personally selecting all new additions to the mod team. Please be civil, and good luck!

196 Stands with Palestine, but those of you in the US should still vote in the general election.

I've been seeing a lot of anti-voting sentiment going around. Can't believe I have to say this, but you need to vote. Not only is there more to the election than just the president. (State policy, Senate, house), but not voting is not an act of protest. C'mon guys
