  • I played the open beta. It arrogantly reintroduces gameplay problems PES and FIFA resolved long ago:

    1. Directional inputs are relative to your constantly moving camera, not your player.
    2. Camera locks onto the player, not the ball.
    3. The off-camera ball tracker completely falls apart in scrambles/when the ball is close since you have to stop and play camera operator to know what the hell is happening before deciding what to do.
    4. Completely ignores motion inputs in favor of situational inputs when performing skills, which severely limits the number of skills you can do. You can essentially do cooler shit in PES2017, never mind any FIFA Street.
    5. No off-camera teammates tracker.
    6. No indication which team is in possession off camera.
    7. No power gauge for passes/shots.

And it does not add anything new in terms of gameplay other than removing fouls, offsides, and throw-ins/corners/goalkicks, which literally was a mode in FIFA98.

Rocket League can get away with some of that because you essentially play with s balloon, not a football; whereas Rematch feels like an awkward version of the 3rd-person camera in PES.

  • Asura's Wrath? I'm pleased to find it's more than a playable anime, but I'm playing on hard and so far it feels easy? If the main draw is the story and visuals, I probably won't end up liking it.

Still playing P4AU: one combo away from beating all Ken's combo callenges! Super fun fighting game—I think I like it more than Under Night In-Birth now.

  • Capcom's Kunitsu-Gami reminded me of this. I didn't really vibe with either. Like, I don't see the selling point:

    1. If it's an RTS, I'm not into that.
    2. If it's an action game, it's kinda boring.
    3. If the draw is the atmosphere, I'd rather rewatch Pick of Destiny 😂
  • In RL there is an indicator on where the ball is and the ball cam works really well.

And the ball is bigger and slower/more floaty than an actual football—it's neither in this game.

I think the 3rd person perspective and RL-looking field make you think it's RL with people, but it's just PES with the camera set to 3rd person.

FIFA is arcade-y as shit, this is why PES fans hate it. It still looked like shit.

Like, I obviously haven't played the game, so IDK for sure if it's fun or not. You're doing the correct thing saving your judgment. All I'm saying is it hasn't shown anything new/revolutionary, and that rubs me off the wrong way.

  • Take it from someone who grew up almost exclusively playing PES and FIFA: this looks ass.

Also, PES always had this camera angle? It's fucking horrible. If you control the entire team, you absolutely want the sideline view, not that wonky 3rd person one.

Even if you control one player, it's just much easier to keep up with the constantly moving ball with a much wider angle. You don't want the ball coming from off screen like they show in the clip when the player scores a header—higher likelihood you're gonna fumble the timing, and if you move the camera to track the ball, you may miss the keeper coming out/a defender coming at you.

And what's up with those rules? 😂 They're comically generic.

Unless this game has a ton of cool ideas hiding up its sleeve and not showing it in the trailers for some odd reason, this looks so obnoxiously arrogant and I have no idea what the selling point is, if any.

And let me add: I stopped playing FIFA and PES because they both suck, so I'm literally the target market. But this doesn't remotely look promising. Like, they didn't even solve the animation issuss… players look so stiff and seeing how they receive the ball is jarring.

  • "Fighting in favor of PC gaming monopoly"

Jesus Christ, the drama. If anything, I'm fighting for Debbie Downers like you to let me enjoy my favorite shit in peace.

I promise you when Capcom publishes Viewtiful Joe on Itch.io, I'll buy it there. Now please take your bullshit elsewhere.

  • Hmm… I couldn't get into it at all, TBH. I tried it long time ago and here's what I remember: "go to X on the map and talk to Y to progress" really put me off, and I didn't enjoy the combat enough to put up with it.

I've been thinking about giving the prequel a shot though. Is it any less nonlinear?

  • Thank you for taking the time to include links! Very helpful.

So I'm familiar with all of these, but you encouraged me to give Aces Wilds and Brigador a real shot. Thanks again!

I'll comment on the ones I played and found interesting:

Furi and Nex Machina got really close to becoming favorites. Only criticisms I have: Furi's moveset is a bit too limited and I have an issue with visual clarity in Next Machina.

I freaking wish I could get into Vanquish! High-level play looks so cool, but apparently I'm allergic to aiming 😅

Strider is fun combat, but I can't get into the vania side.

ZeroRanger is great, but the horizontal segments put me off. Not a fan of horizontal shmups.

  • I'm familiar with Lords of the Fallen, but I don't enjoy souls-like combat. I'm a big fan of old school death metal though (Autopsy, Brutality, Immolation… etc.) so I'll check it out to see what that is about. Thanks!

I really need these games ported to Steam. What do y'all have on your lists?

I'm currently scraping the Steam barrel and I could really use these ports:

    1. Gravity Rush Remastered*/*Gravity Rush 2: best traversal in gaming. Surprisingly fun combat too. Just pure joy all around.
    2. Viewtiful Joe: integral Kamiya core and probably the closest on this list to actually happening seeing the Clover revival.
    3. God Hand: I have nothing new to add here. All I can do is reiterate the "beat'em goat" claim.
    4. The Red Star: PS2 hidden gem—mix of beat'em up and twin-stick shooter. Proper action game rooted in arcade design principles.
    5. Ketsui: again, all I can do is reiterate the "shmup goat" claim. Criminal this is not on Steam. Come on, M2.

Alternate editions of games we already have on Steam:

    1. Catherine: Full Body: extra stages is cool, but I need the online Colosseum.
    2. Ninja Gaiden II: ugh, this one is obviously never happening at this point. I swear, even if they try a third time, they'll most likely find

Linear, action hidden gems like The Red Star?

I'm looking for action hidden gems, preferably scripted and linear—no open world or procuderal generation (roguelike, roguelike-like, or roguelite)

Some of my "usual suspects" favorites are Bayonetta, The Wonderful 101, Viewtiful Joe, God Hand, and Ninja Gaiden II. On the shmup/twin-stick shooter side: Crimzon Clover, Ketsui, and Assault Android Cactus+.

I also love Catherine, so I wouldn't mind some puzzle thrown in there.

As nonlinear as I can go: The Deadly Tower of Monsters.

  • I grew up a big fan of 30 Seconds to Mars, but this creep can fuck off.

And FFS, stop trying to make shitty Tron movies. You don't have the balls to make it campy because that's not gonna make you money, and anything else is gonna feel forced AF.

  • I just set up Kingdom Hearts 2 on PCSX2 to try and decide if I'm gonna buy it on Steam.

Other than that, I'm finishing my The Wonderful 101 Hard playthrough on the way to 100% the game, and trying to beat all of Ken Amada's combo challenges in P4AU—27 down, 3 to go.

Making peace with liking very few games?

I love my favorite games and have been playing them for years, but I disliked about 99% of the games I played.

I don't think I have FoMO or anything; I just find it weird because my taste in music, film, or art/media in general is usually fairly broad. I guess I just wonder why my taste in games is aggressively limited.

It's not for the lack of trying new games; I've tried more or less anything I could find, sometimes because it's popular, other times because it looked interesting, but nothing really hits the mark like my favorite games.

I just don't like what most developers create, I guess?

I'm hoping, by posting this, maybe I can find others who are having a similar experience, and we can share thoughts.
