Mid-30s guy who lives near Denver. I compete in powerlifting and am into ham radio and reading.
Follow me on Mastodon at @[email protected]
Same for me. I asked on Mastodon and people were saying it doesn’t work for them anymore. Very strange.
You should check out Ham Radio Crash Cpurse on YouTube. Lots of great info there.
I've been considering a switch since my instance has a lot of issues with overloading. I like that yours doesn't censor words. Does lemm.ee have issues with too many people joining and overloading the server?
Yeah I was on Kbin but got tired of the UI. Plus there are no apps for it.
RSS Feeds
What RSS feeds do you subscribe to? Ham radio, or just tech in general.
We have a similar one here in the US. People think if you go outside when it's too cold, you'll get sick.
Damn, it looks like it still got you.
Let's see if that gets filtered.
Edit: looks like the curse filter Broke that link. Just google “mtg called Biebert a little” and you’ll find it.
They’re pretty much baofengs with much better filtering, so you don’t get front end overloading which can be frustrating.
Isn’t it maintained again?
Most activity, I've seen here: [email protected] but there's a lemmy bug that's not showing a bunch of posts. That should be resolved soon.
These are good cheaper radios (The price has gone up a bit)
They are fine for starting out with, but you'll probably want to upgrade soon. There are better radios for around $75 if you can afford it.
Ham radio! It's relaxing. My favorite activity is to take my portable gear to parks and operate Parks on the Air.
Using lemmy is well worth the $5 per month I give them.
I have photos of the interior. Let’s see if this is the one.
I moved further north and I miss it so much!
Tex-Mex in Hiroshima, Japan
I was in Hiroshima and found this little Tex-Mex restaurant near the bomb dome. It was great, and I say that as someone originally from Texas. Search for it if you’re ever there.
Try this. It might look a little familiar https://mlmym.org/midwest.social/
Haha nice
I put on ska on easy days sometimes. Today I listened to Supernothing by Streetlight Manifesto like 3 times.
dfawerfds
It's near enough the big city that I can go do fun things when I want, but it's quiet here and not a lot of traffic.
I do it any time I need to do a stealthy pee or if things are hard if you catch my drift
Is SMSGTE working for anyone else?
The APRS SMSGTE service was supposed to have gone down a month or two ago, but it has been working for me the entire time, at least when I message myself or my wife. I've chatted with others on others forums and other people have said it's not working for them.
Just curious, is it working for anyone else?
Has anyone else had double downvote “buttons”?
Had a terrible test day, 21 days out
I was only able to hit 96% on squat, 92% on deadlift, but got a 3% increase on bench, from 270# (122 kg) to 280# (127 kg).
I did take a two week trip during training and had an SI joint tweak around the same time that made me train easy for a while, so that may be it. I’m surprised about deadlift though because I recently pulled 460# (208 kg) off short two inch blocks.
Maybe I just had a bad day? Now I’m not sure which attempts to take at the meet.
Thoughts?
What are you doing this Shabbat?
I’m going to shul and will be playing games with my wife. I’m going to start rereading Heschel’s The Sabbath too.
How about you?
What other fantasy should I read if I’m obsessed with Lord of the Rings?
I’ve been a huge fan of the movies since they first came out but didn’t read the books until the beginning of this year. I just wasn’t a reader until recently. I’ve been yearning for some more fantasy but haven’t been able to find anything similar. I tried The Silmarillion but it reads too much like a textbook to me.
What are some other great fantasy books that I might like?
A small bug I’ve noticed with upvote counts
I just made this post and it already showed I had two upvotes, which likely isn’t true. I’ve noticed this every time I’ve made a comment lately. Not sure if it happens with posts.
How do you deal with in-laws visiting?
My in-laws are visiting for a week at the end of next month and they like to visit until late in the evening. However, I typically go to bed at 7 PM because I have to get up at 4 AM to train for my sport before work. I'll have just finished a competition and will be beginning training for another one when they're here.
What's the best way to set boundaries with them without coming across as an asshole? My wife will probably want to stay out later while they're here, so I'll have to figure out a way to compromise.
To make it more interesting, what are some things your in-laws do that annoy you when they visit?
Favorite PR day music?
I have my final test day before my meet coming up on Sunday and I'm looking for some really heavy/hard music to listen to during my attempts.
What is your go to music for this?
To start it off, here are three of my favorites:
Best way to recover fully before meets or test days?
I have a test day coming up on Sunday and will be treating it as a mock meet (my meet is 23 July). My knees and lower back feel a bit beat up still. My program gives me about a week of deload sessions before testing so I'm good with that, but I'm wondering what I can do to help my knees and back.
Any suggestions?
What’s your favorite bad movie?
My wife and I are in the mood to watch something terrible. We just watched the langoliers and hackers so something in that vein would be fun.
What are y’all’s favorite shitty movies?
Had a lot of Field Day fun this weekend

Went out to Cherry Creek State Park (K-1213) with a buddy and played radio. I took my buddipole but couldn’t get it to tune up because I forgot to charge my VNA. Luckily I brought an EFHW that I strung up to the buddipole’s tripod.
I only worked 10 contacts in 4 hours. 8 SSB and 2 CW, but it was fun. I forgot how awesome operating from a park is, and I want to get back into POTA!
Rig: IC-705 Antenna: 80-10m EFHW Power: 9ah Bioenno battery
Favorite powerlifting / strength training books?
I'm going to go with Scientific Principles of Strength Training. A lot of good stuff in there. I have Boris Sheiko's book but haven't started it yet. I've heard it's not so great but I love his programming so picked it up anyway.
What are some others that are good, informative reads?
Why did you choose your instance?
I'm currently struggling to find my home. I have an account here at lemmy.ml, where most of my posts are, and one at kbin.
Why do you think your instance is the place to be?

What are you currently reading and how do you like it?
I'm about 70% through the second Jurassic Park book and it's ok. People on /r/books seemed to think it was even better than the first, but it feels like a slog compared to the first. I'm looking forward to moving on to Stephen King's The Stand.
Looking for critiques on my long running webmap project
I'm a ham radio operator and use what's called packet radio frequently. This is a mode that is essentially a computer network over radio. It's useful to know the location of other packet stations so you know where you can "hop" to, by making multiple connections.
So I wrote some Python that automatically connects to different nodes and scrapes the stations they hear. I use an API to get the station locations based on callsign, and these locations are saved in a PostGIS database. I use GeoServer to serve up the layers you see in the webmap.
I'm wondering how I can improve this? Maybe someone has some ideas I can implement? I've tried adding a line layer to show a spiderweb of who can hear who, but it becomes a huge mess and causes the map to lag quite a bit.
This has been my first webmap so I'm sure there's a lot to improve. Please critique away!
