  • Below are the kernel logs for when I connect the USB on F42 (new kernel)

And these are the logs on the old kernel that still works:

    {clock details changed to hh:mm for privacy}

One thing I notice is the new upgrade trying to use ModemManager rather than NetworkManager. The device is also defined as "Mobile Broadband", instead of "Ethernet".

Loading the kernel module with modprobe, as another commenter suggested, didn't make any change.

Another thing: An excerpt from the kernel changelog at https://cdn.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v6.x/

     undefined
rndis_host: Flag RNDIS modems as WWAN devices

        [ Upstream commit 67d1a8956d2d62fe6b4c13ebabb57806098511d8 ]

Set FLAG_WWAN instead of FLAG_ETHERNET for RNDIS interfaces on Mobile
Broadband Modems, as opposed to regular Ethernet adapters.

Otherwise NetworkManager gets confused, misjudges the device type,
and wouldn't know it should connect a modem to get the device to work.
What would be the result depends on ModemManager version -- older
ModemManager would end up disconnecting a device after an unsuccessful
probe attempt (if it connected without needing to unlock a SIM), while
a newer one might spawn a separate PPP connection over a tty interface
instead, resulting in a general confusion and no end of chaos.

The only way to get this work reliably is to fix the device type
and have good enough version ModemManager (or equivalent).

    I am so lost xD

USB Tethering from Android just stopped working

Upon upgrading from Fedora 41 to 42, I noticed that the USB tethering just doesn't work

networkctl recognizes the device as "wwan" now, instead of "ether". If I load up a previous kernel, USB tethering works normally.

This seems to be a change in the kernel, and probably won't be reverted in the future. What do I do?

    More detail in this comment

You know what? Fuck this. I just backed my shit up and installed Debian. Still, please try to look into this, this could be a problem for many others

  • This really makes me wonder if free will even exists.... I mean, 90% of what we do and what we think depends on environmental stimuli, the remaining 10% depends on genetic makeup and the natural variations/mutations of our brain cells.

  • That ability to make a choice is itself a result of being in the right time+place and receiving the correct guidance+education.

Like someone who read your comment might look into this and slowly learn to be more resilient, but if that same person doesn't read it, never receives any guidance and has to suffer psychological abuse from those around them, would you really blame them for being the way they are?

    Waydroid not working {Fedora Core 41, Sway window manager}

It's the same error if I try VANILLA or GAPPS

[SOLUTION] It works after you enter a password using "lxpolkit".

    Linux is religion

The distro family trees are like different pantheons.

Distros are like individual gods. Community developers are priests and end-users are the commoners who pray for blessings, good fortune, and happy lives. Priests direct the prayers of commoners to their respective gods.

There is the Debian pantheon, ancient gods of peace and stillness.

The Arch pantheon, progressive gods that bring revolution along with a bit of chaos.

The Red Hat pantheon, gods tha- wtf am I writing?

What are the best news sources for global news (NOT PRIMARILY USA) with RSS?

Just installed Feeder from F-Droid. The app is empty right now.

What global news source with RSS do you recommend that's not spammy and mostly unbiased?

What's your favourite Youtube channel most people probably haven't heard of?

For me it's DJ Peach Cobbler. I've been watching his videos since he had around 2,000 subscribers. Now it's nearly 450,000.

He used to mostly make videos on games, now he does a lot of history stuff too. He also has a little satirical news show, and a few tasteful shitposts. A really diverse YouTube channel.

What's your favorite YouTube channel that's not a mainstream big-name like pewdiepie, mrbeast, ksi, etc...?

I don't hate the upcoming minecraft movie.

I'll probably watch it once, have some dumb fun watching it and move on.

Also the opening line in the new official trailer "As a child, I yearned for the mines" is just.... chef's kiss had me rolling xD

Who knows? I might get to extract some fun out of the cringe dialogue and uncanny CGI.

I don't understand why it gets THAT much hate though, before it's even released. Maybe it's just the internet amplifying everything.

May be very shit opinion, feel free to disagree / attempt to correct

How screwed would one be if their email provider shuts down?

What if protonmail, gmail or whatever email provider you are using goes belly-up? Are all your accounts doomed?

If so, what are some preventive measures? Adding backup emails to your registered accounts?

Turned my shitty Intel Atom 32-bit laptop with just 1GB of RAM into a useful lightweight workstation

This laptop was originally sold with Windows 7 32-bit edition installed. Even back then it was really unresponsive and clunky. After several years of it lying around and being useless, I decided to do a really lightweight debian install on it.

And guess what? It can do so much more than sit idly in some landfill.

Now I can use it to write my study notes in neovim (gives me a good excuse to learn vim, and I'm learning slowly), listen to music with gst123, learn c and c++, torrent large files with transmission-cli and qbittorrent, and the list goes on....

I mostly just use tty. I hit "startx i3" if I absolutely need a GUI, but for everything else, tty. I use links2 for Wikipedia, online resources and browsing memes which is already a big chunk of my internet usage. I was really giddy when I saw Tor browser had a 32-bit version, it runs surprisingly well even with less than 1 gigabyte of memory (unless I visi

Internet strangely stops working after one day of installation.

This is an Acer Aspire one laptop, with a 32 bit CPU and Debian 12.7. Whenever I install Linux on it, the Internet works for about one day. And when I boot it up the next day, it just stops working. This is the case for WiFi, Ethernet and USB tethering via Android.

After running networkctl it gave me this:

I can ping 8.8.8.8 in this state, but not gnu.org. I can't open websites in Firefox either.

Then I ran "sudo systemctl start systemd-networkd". The networkctl output changed but everything worked exactly as the above two images. Couldn't open websites still.

    Yesterday everything was working perfectly

    I can't delete files in my old ntfs partition from when I had windows. {EDIT: I messed up}

This laptop has one hard disk with two partitions. One of them has a bunch of data. I can't delete the data at all, dolphin(the file manager) gives a "not enough permissions error". When I try to delete stuff with rm it displays this:

rm: cannot remove 'filename': Read-only file system

    What do I do?

EDIT: I backed up the data and reformatted the partition. This completely broke my install and fedora wouldn't open at all. I popped in a live USB, backed up some other stuff and I am reinstalling fedora right now (writing this from the live installer :P)

What can I do with my super old laptop?

I had installed Debian on an Acer Aspire One Laptop. It has a 32-bit Intel Atom CPU with just 1GB of RAM. I obviously can't run it like a usual desktop anymore, it's way too slow.

I tried it to connect it to my TV with HDMI to create some sort of "Smart TV" setup, but that didn't work out because I can't even play 1080p videos on VLC with it smoothly.

So.... What now? Can I only use it for headless stuff like pihole, nextcloud, etc. now?

Is there any hope left for my unsuccessful "Smart TV" contraption?

Where can I find the highest quality episodes of Mr.Bean?

I torrented a few episodes from 1337x, but they are quite compressed/low-quality. Is this the best there is or is there a higher quality version hidden somewhere? It wasn't originally filmed it at such a low quality, right?

    Absolutely loving Linux btw

Couldn't run Windows 7, and Windows 10 ran like shit. My old PC basically got a second life with Linux.

This is Half-Life GOTY running on Wine, runs really smooth.

The only downside is lack of directX support, OpenGL is there but the integrated graphics card only supports till OpenGL 2.1, which is not enough for many things, and also slower than directX. Still, my PC feels much faster now, and doesn't scream like a demon whenever I open up a browser :)

(Maybe I should dual boot Win7(While never connecting it to the web), just to play some more games with DirectX?)

Also, my local hospital has started using Ubuntu, their old PCs also couldn't handle the heavy burden of running Windows I guess 🤣

How do I uninstall my browser along with all its data?

I recently installed chromium, created a new user and logged into a website. After my work was done, I removed chromium with "sudo dnf remove chromium".

A few days later I installed chromium again through dnf. My user account was still there and I was logged into the same site.

Is there a way to avoid this and uninstall an app along with all its user data?

Trying to rescue a 1GB RAM laptop

I had an Aspire One D270 laptop with a 32-bit Intel Atom CPU and 1 gigabyte of RAM, so I installed Debian with Xfce on it, but even then it's running way too slow.

Is there anything I can do to make the laptop faster and more responsive given its limited memory?
